KFC - do you think this could be true?

Just received this email:

KFC has been a part of our American traditions formany years. Manypeople, day in and day out, eat at KFC religiously. Do they really know what they are eating? During a recent study of KFC done at the University of New Hampshire, they found some very upsetting facts.

First of all, has
anybody noticed that just recently, the company has changed theirname? Kentucky Fried Chicken has become KFC. Does anybody know why? We thought the real reason was because of the "FRIED" foodissue. IT'SNOT!

The reason why they call it KFC is because they cannot use the word chicken anymore.

Why? KFC does not use real chickens. They actually use genetically manipulated organisms. These so called"chickens" are kept alive by tubes inserted into their bodies to pumpblood and nutrients throughout their structure.

They have no beaks, no feathers, and no feet. Their bone structure is dramatically shrunk to get moremeat out of them. This is great for KFC. Because they do not have to payso much for their production costs. There is no more plucking of the feathers or the removal of the beaks and feet.

The government has told them to change all of their menus so they do not say chicken anywhere. If you lookclosely you will notice this. Listen to their commercials, Iguarantee you will not see or hear the word chicken. I find this matter to bevery disturbing.

I hope people will start to realize this and letother people know. Please forward thismessage to as many people as you can. Together we make KFC start using real chicken again.

Haven't posted before, but just thought I'd add, my boyfriend is studying to be a vet and did work experience in an abattoir that supplies macdonalds etc. The guys working there said that they would eat the burgers (new legislation = pretty good beef), but wouldn't touch any of the fast food chicken if they were paid to.
Generally chicken is a poorer standard of meat and slaughtering etc. They didnt say they were mutant birds though

munz · 29/11/2005 13:48

do u think this applys to all chicken then or just FF chicken?

misdee - that's just plain disgusting! that has to be a joke!

NomDePlume · 29/11/2005 13:49

That Pamela Anderson Peta video is horrendous. Poor things.

lp259 · 29/11/2005 13:53

Munz, the abattoir chaps (not sure if they're actually butchers) were talking especially about MacDonald's and Burger King chicken. Put me right off!

sweetkitty · 29/11/2005 14:01

Think it's all chicken sorry

The meat is often injected with milk protein to whiten it up.

misdee · 29/11/2005 14:03

munz its a urban legend, taken from the snopes site. its false. never happened. bit like the pop rocks and coke story.

munz · 29/11/2005 14:05

that's ok misdee - might have to talk to the butcher about their meat then - don't like the idea of our chickens being pumped full of stuff/poor quality as the lamb/pork/beef is all local 'grown' and 95% organic.

def don't think i'll be eating FF chicken in future - cheesy pizza instead

(shame thou KFC has a lovely coating!)

NomDePlume · 29/11/2005 14:06

Best to go for Free Range or Organic chickens, munz. They are more expensive but there's a horrible reason for 'value' chickens being as cheap as they are.

DissLocated · 29/11/2005 14:10

deffo Oryx and Crake.

handlemecarefully · 29/11/2005 14:20

lol, lol, lol

(sorry!)

and lol again. I love these urban myths

handlemecarefully · 29/11/2005 14:21

But on a sober note, I agree with buying free range chicken.....

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 29/11/2005 14:25

There is a massive difference in organic/free range chicken and value/cheap chicken.

Has anyone bought chickens straight from frozen before? There is no way that is normal chicken. It's vile.

Tbh I think if I gave way to my feelings after watching some of them videos on the Peta site I could easily stop eating meat altogether.

sickandtired · 29/11/2005 14:27

I can never see free range or organic chickens at the supermarket - do they do them? I usually shop at sainsburys

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 29/11/2005 14:28

Don't they have a seperate section for organic foods?

munz · 29/11/2005 14:40

I have NBG money was v v tight - won't be doing it any more I can certianly tell u that much.

we now have the brest from the butcher (i'm told it's 100% meat with no water) and whole chickens fresh from tesco - but tbh I don't look to see if it's organic/free range - might start using our chicken farm (locally) instead.

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 29/11/2005 15:05

LOL @ mutant chickens, but I don't LOL at the Peta thingy. I don't buy cheap meat (or expensive supermarket meat, tbh) for that exact reason. IMHO, it's enough that they have to be slaughtered for our consumption, without having their short lives blighted by being shoved in small cagesd with 900 other animals, and then being forced to die in their own urine. We buy from the local organic butcher, wjo owns a local free range farm. As we don't have alot of moolah, we'd rather go without.

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 29/11/2005 15:08

I don't normally buy organic just the supermarket ones (I think Asda and Tesco do them 2 for £5)

I bought the frozen stuff purely because it was cheaper and it is not nice stuff.

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 29/11/2005 15:10

I bought the froxen chicken from Asda once, it was shocking (I was v hard up at the time)

DissLocated · 29/11/2005 15:17

Somerfield do fresh organic chicken breasts, about £5 for 2 I think.

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 29/11/2005 15:18

Now this may well be another myth but I recently heard that Tesco's chicken come from Thailand. Because we're not allowed chicken from there it goes to Turkey for a couple of weeks first and then gets given a new country of origin.
Supermarket chicken is yucky. Always get their free range.
We buy our meat from our local butcher and although it isn't free range it is farm/barn chicken which means they can roam about outside by day but are then rounded in at night (because of foxes). This means they can't technically be called free range.
I doubt any of Tesco's chickens are reared like that though, regardless of their country of origin.

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 29/11/2005 15:20

I'm v suspicious of supermarket produce. I tend not to but fruit or veg there either (although, I sometimes do out of convenience) as I perfer to buy it from the local greengrocer (mainly because it's local stuff and is tastier and cheaper!) I do have the luxury of being at home in the day, so I have time to go to the local shops.

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 29/11/2005 15:29

I would prefer to buy from our local butcher but it is so expensive.

Tbh I'd love to buy everything organic.

What do you all pay for meat?

I did an asda shop last week and got....
2 whole chickens, 1 beef joint (pre-packed), 1 lamb joint (pre-packed) and 1 bacon joint for just over £13. I didn't think that was too bad but can't say how great they will be.

munz · 29/11/2005 15:30

at local green grocer we don't have a local one - nearest one's 20 mins in the car. our butcher has a few bit's thou.

boss just told me about a local chicken farm - also takes chickens in at night so not organic but are free range, but apparently u can look around b4 u buy. (so will go in there to have a look)

munz · 29/11/2005 15:34

ndb - for a months' meat for 2 of us from the butcher I spend £30 normally and get two chickens from tesco) and frozen lamb chops (DH only) - only cos they're soooooooooo expensive from the butcher.

this month I had:
£2 of steak/kidney (got extra in freezer from last month)
£4 of mince
£7 joint of beef (cut to make 3 joints)
6 chick brest
6 pork chops of the bone (about an inch thick)
6 slices of ham for sarnies.

also got finest sausage this month much to DH's disgust after the sausgae debate which was £3 for 12.

(our butchers v good, I go every month wihtout fail so he normally chucks in a bit extra and charges me less - example the joint was actually £9 not £7)
also ordered a turkey from him will be about £16 ish £2 per lb apparently.

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 29/11/2005 15:41

Thats pretty good munz.
What do you pay for the chick breasts?

It's strange because in our village we have every shop you'd ever need, 2 bakers, 3 butchers, florists, PO, newsagents, craft shop, a small ponden mill type store and countless takeaways, beauticians etc but no grocers. It's mad!

I'd love to be able to get fresh stuff rather than reist old fruit and veg from our local Co-op.
