Brunch: naff or OK? If OK, any suggestions?

Dh has just remembered to tell me that a friend/ colleague, his partner and their dd are coming over and staying at ours this week-end. I was about to throttle him when I thought he might be useful to help me tidy the place up before Staurday.....
Anyway, they will leave around 2pm on Sunday, so I don't think a full sunday lunch is an option (we'll have a very nice dinner on saturday night).
Was thinking of just having nice big brunch mid-morning instead with usual juice, tea/coffee, croissant, toast, eggs, muffins, smoked salmon...
Is this naff?
If it isn't, do you have any suggestions to make it special? Don't want to look mean by not making them lunch!!

it's a great idea. you might have to sneak the kids something earlier to keep them going though!

Feistybird · 23/11/2005 21:31

that sounds lovely......nothing naff at all about it.

HRHWickedwaterwitch · 23/11/2005 21:31

God, it's not at all mean, it's very nice of you. And not in the slightest naff, not remotely imo.

FrenchKissUnderMistletoeGirl · 23/11/2005 21:33

so far so good!
it's just that I remember having brunch a few times in a nice place in Paris about 15 years ago thinking how cool it was, so I thought it's properly very unfashionable now

I think it depends on when you usually get up, what you did the night before etc. My family (older generation anyway) consider that lunch should always be started at 1pm sharp, so they would expect to be fed before leaving at 2pm. But if you and your friends are likely to be up late the night before and then get up late a 10 am brunch would be great. If your children are likely to wake everyone up at 6, then you might get very hungry! That is assuming that brunch replaces both breakfast and lunch, of course. We like waffles for a late and leisurely Sunday breakfast.

Sugarmag · 24/11/2005 09:29

I love brunch! The usual bagels, muffins, smoked salmon etc sounds great. If you want to serve something warm as well quiche is always a good brunch food. You can make (or buy) it in advance adn just warm it up on Sunday morning. Yum, can I come too.

Hulababy · 24/11/2005 09:42

We often do this if we have friends over, leaving around that time. Either do a cold brunch like the one you have suggested or a mig full english - depending on who it is and how much I can be bothered with the mess!

Carmenere · 24/11/2005 09:53

I am a bit of an expert on brunch (no really) and diddn't know I was unfashionable . IMO making muffins is really easy and very impressive - mix dry ingredients, mix wet ingredients, mix both together and bake! Or a huge fritatta - an Italian baked omelette weith whatever you have handy - or American pancakes with maple syrup and crispy bacon - And what about a fantastic bloody Mary, they are really delicious the morning after the night before!

Carmenere, don't worry, you are not unfashionable, I am the ONLY weirdo who thought it might be

Thanks for all the great idea

Don't think I can do a full english as would be weird coming from me, and there is an italian involved too!

shall I add freshly made fruit salad too?

love the idea of bloody mary.......

ooh sounds a great idea - I love brunch - can I come & can we have american pancakes & maple syrup ?

Fruit salad would be good too & pots of steaming coffee

Sugarmag · 24/11/2005 10:50

Definitely fruit salad or platter with slices of melon, pineapple, strawberries. Actually, my MIL does a nice thing where she makes fruit kebabs - just puts all the fruit onto skewers and arranges them on a platter. Simple but a little bit different from the norm.

I like making up platters of sliced tomato, red onion, cucumber and smoked salmon. Put it all on a bed of romaine lettuce to make it look nice.

FrenchKissUnderMistletoeGirl · 24/11/2005 11:09

OK shall I start taking orders then?
