Yoghurt - query re. cows milk under one year

Hi there,

Having read all the "yoghurt" messages in the Food thread I'm still not sure whether I am OK to give my DS yoghurt, considering it's cows milk and they are not supposed to have cows milk until over 1 year. I'm allergic to goat's milk myself so don't fancy giving it to DS just in case he's like me. Also want to avoid fromage frais etc. that are full of sugar.

Can anyone advise? DS is just over 6 months and loving mushed vegetables and fruit, and I thought yoghurt mixed with the fruit might be nice.

Thank you!

What milk does he have atm ? If he doesn't have allergies to cow's milk then he should be ok with yoghurt from 6 months. You could use cow's milk in cooking or on cereal from 6 months too, but not as a drink.

NotQuiteCockney · 23/11/2005 17:55

Unless you have allergic concerns, they're fine to have cow's milk and byproducts from 6 months, but not as a main drink.

What is your goat's milk allergy like? Is it severe? Does it date from when you were a child? (Or is it more of a stomach-upset-intolerance sort of thing?)

If your DS already has regular formula, he has already been (somewhat) exposed to cow's milk, anyway.

aloha · 23/11/2005 18:01

Cows milk - as everyone says, is fine in cooking and as yoghurt, cheese etc etc from six months.

AllieM · 23/11/2005 18:26

He's been majority breastfed for six months with the odd formula feed here and there when necessary so you're quite right, he's sampled cows milk in some way through that.

My goat's milk allergy is really through goat's cheese, it just makes me throw up! Shame really as it's part of so many lovely dishes but hey ho. I can have feta and sheep's milk stuff but just not goat.

Thanks all for tips re. use of cow's milk - I'll keep an eye on him but will give him some of the yummy organic full fat yoghurt I've just bought and see how we go.

Ta very much!
x

Hmm, not sure what to think of your goat's milk issue, but that probably isn't an allergy in the normal sense? Not sure.

At any rate, they do alter the cow's milk proteins in formula to make them less allergenic, but he has been somewhat exposed, and trying yogurt at this point is probably fine.

Twiglett · 23/11/2005 18:29

DD went on cow's milk from 10.5 months when weaned off breast (in Australia they advise 9 months)

she started eating yogurt from around 6 months

don't understand the goat's milk bit

bobbybob · 23/11/2005 18:34

If she's had formula she can try yoghurt. Sugar is not evil when good dental hygiene is used - but it tends to be in greater quantities in the foods that also have colourings (don't have to be artificial - ds reacts to annatto in a way that makes us go to hospital), preservative, sulfites to preserve the fruit etc. etc.

A bit of natural yoghurt with some fruit will be a good test - because any reaction could ONLY be the yoghurt not all the other stuff.

mojomummy · 23/11/2005 19:49

Rachel's Dairy greek natural greek yogurt is fab, no sugar & lovely & creamy. My DD eats it on it's own & several mums are surprised when their toddlers eat it at my house

My ds has cows milk in a cup as a drink with his meals, he has done from 9 months. He has had it on his weetabix from 6 months so I dont see the difference in drinking it and mixing it with food!
We have no allergy history.
I was given cows milk as a child from 6 months.

mumfor1sttime · 23/11/2005 20:14

Ds is now 10.5 months btw

hunkermunker · 23/11/2005 20:19

DS (19mo) loves the full fat Yeo Valley natural yoghurt - he sometimes has the flavoured Yeo Valley ones (which also have some sugar in), but usually the natural one. Gave him an apricot one the other day and he wouldn't eat it because it didn't have the flower on the front that the natural one does...only a stupid apricot - LOL!

hunkermunker · 23/11/2005 20:19

Cows milk shouldn't be given as a main drink before a year or thereabouts because it's not got the right balance of fats and is quite high in sodium.

NannyL · 23/11/2005 20:20

they CAN have cows mild from 6 months, just shouldnt have it as a MAIN DRINK unti, 1 year old.

Yogurt is fine from 6 months (and despite what they say in petit filoux etc (eww i HATE them, FULL of crap) i would NEVER give a 4 month old yogurt (or any child under 6 months anything other than pure fruit / veg and baby rice.)

mumfor1sttime · 23/11/2005 20:23

DS has 2 bottles of formula a day and a cup or two of cows milk. He loves it and its good for him. He has a fromage frais yoghurt every day too and has done since he was 5.5 months.

Think the 'cant have this until..he is x age' is ott.

mojomummy · 23/11/2005 21:58

do you think your baby needs the extra sodium in cows milk then ? And have you read what goes into petit filous ? it's pure junk & I can't think who could benefit from it.

Rachels dairy does little friends which don't have added sugar. Advantage of organic yogurts is they aren't full of crap - at least the ones I buy aren't

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 23/11/2005 22:00

We use the Total Greek yoghurt for 7mo ds - usually add fruit to it.

bobbybob · 23/11/2005 23:18

mumfor1sttime - OTT? really? I think as AllieM has an allergy herself to a similar product she is right to be cautious.

AllieM · 24/11/2005 09:04

Hunkermunker, it did make me laugh when you said your little one wouldn't eat it if it didn't have the flower on the front!

Good to know that some of them like Greek yog. as well. Am going to give first taste of yoghurt this evening so will let you know how it goes. Frankly the pureed fruit is so nice I'm tempted to do "one spoon for you, one spoon for Mummy" as I feed him!

Interesting re. sodium in cow's milk, I didn't know.

mumfor1sttime · 24/11/2005 19:09

I did say that we have no history in our family of allergies. Of course anyone with history of allergies has the right to be cautious - I too myself would be.

mojomummy-I feed my 10.5 month cows milk - get over it.

mojomummy · 24/11/2005 21:58

fortunately, I've nothing to get over.

hunkermunker · 24/11/2005 22:03

AllieM, remember that your baby doesn't know that yoghurt "should" taste sweet - DS adores natural yoghurt (largely, I believe, because he wasn't given things like Petit Filous - read they're like sprinkling sugar on the baby's gums ). But it does have to have a flower on the front (oh, how I'm looking forward to teasing my little flowertot ).

NannyL · 24/11/2005 22:39

Agree with you mojomummy...

its not YOU thats gonna have problems in later life due to a too high sodium diet when a baby!

aloha · 24/11/2005 22:50

Feeding a 10.5 month old some cows milk isn't a heinous offence. I think some reactions here are really OTT.
And Petit Filous aren't 'full of junk' - they have some sugar in them, that's all.
It's not like giving them poison!

NannyL · 24/11/2005 23:06

as well as sugar the have loads of other 'stuff'

i agree that they arnt as bad as for example 'thomas the tank engine / wildlife / fimbles' fromage frais which contain EVEN more crap than petit filoux.

If you want it to ONLY be yogurt fruit and sugar and NO crap at all then you need to go organic (and rachels organic have NO sugar, just apple juice!)

everytime we have yogurts we read the ingrediants out, (the 5 and 3 year old ALWAYS ask) actually like to know the ingrdaints of most things. They know all about chemicals etc in food (and organic "happy" food!) and already are very wise about those 'things'
