Yoghurt - query re. cows milk under one year

Hi there,

Having read all the "yoghurt" messages in the Food thread I'm still not sure whether I am OK to give my DS yoghurt, considering it's cows milk and they are not supposed to have cows milk until over 1 year. I'm allergic to goat's milk myself so don't fancy giving it to DS just in case he's like me. Also want to avoid fromage frais etc. that are full of sugar.

Can anyone advise? DS is just over 6 months and loving mushed vegetables and fruit, and I thought yoghurt mixed with the fruit might be nice.

Thank you!

beg to differ on this, petit filous are full of junk - the suggestion is they are yogurt & fruit - but they are full of different types of sugar, modified maize etc etc - yuk ! There are too many ingredients for me to remember & all these ingredients are unnecessary. I just don't understand why they are produced this way & marketed as a 'healthy' snack/option. Would you honestly give natural yogurt &/or fruit & then add 4 + tsp's of sugar to it ?

In my fruit yogurt I want fruit & yogurt, nothing more, nothing less. Parents seem quite happy to buy petit filous, desserts with animal hooves etc etc for their kids - well, that's down to them - I wouldn't feed my daughter anything I wasn't happy to eat myself (ok, so she has organic beef, but that's it & I would eat it if I liked it)

Strawberry:

Strawberry & Vanilla:

Raspberry:

I don't see anything so terrible there. All natural and vegetable in origin. Maize is only corn for heavens sake, not deadly poison!

I think our children will survive a little sugar in their diet.

bobbybob · 25/11/2005 01:39

"Flavourings" is a little vague for me to risk it - but ds does have multiple serious allergies. I also think the list sounds fine for children without these problems, which is why I posted it.

NannyL · 25/11/2005 09:06

But when compared to

Yougurt, strawberry puree, sugar, lemon juice
(yeovalley, strwberry)

Yogurt banana grapejuice (Rachels organic banan favour)

which would YOU rather your child (or yourself) consumed?

the fact that they can and DO make them without the crap seems to me to be a VERY good reason not to add it all in...

  • 4 petit filoux big pots cost MORE than 4 yeovalley 'big' childrens yogurts!
mojomummy · 25/11/2005 09:58

guar & xantam gum says it all for me !! Have you ever added them to homemade receipes ?!

No thanks, I'll stick with Rachels/Yeo Valley/Noddy Organics

No point getting into a big debate - if you're happy, that's down to you,

hunkermunker · 25/11/2005 10:08

They're more than 5% sugar then. Wonder how much more?

I don't like gums in food either much. And if your child will eat natural yog, why give them PFs?

NannyL · 25/11/2005 10:25

i THINK abput 12% sugar springs to mind

i always give babies natural yog mixed with a cube of fruit puree anyway!

aloha · 25/11/2005 10:32

Look, it's fine. We eat tons of Rachel's yoghurt in our house. I just think there was some fairly unpleasant stuff posted which seemed - I thought - to imply that anyone who gave their kids a Petit Filous or a drink of milk was akin to a child abuser and I wanted to offer some support.
Guar gum and Xanthan gum are completely natural plant extracts btw. I don't add them to my recipes but I might add gelatin or pectin if the recipe (for jam or jelly) called for it and it's not really any different. While I think Jaime Oliver is God, I also think you can be too obsessive about children's diets, and just because not everyone feels the same way isn't a reason to have a go. But then my baby had a mini-cheddar the other day!
It's not arsenic!

hunkermunker · 25/11/2005 10:33

I mind them specifically because they say "from 4 months" on them, Aloha. I know they're not poison, but I think there are better habits to form.

mojomummy · 25/11/2005 11:05

Hi Aloha, no one is having a go - although Mumfor1sttime did tell me to get over 'it' (whatever 'it' is)

I think childrens food is a complete minefield & manufacturers will do anything to entice parents/children into wanting their products.

We all have different opinions on what we are happy to feed our children /bring them up & that's what makes mumsnet such a good read - all these differing opinions are offered & we can make up our own minds.

mumfor1sttime · 25/11/2005 11:30

aloha - its nice to know that Im not the only one who feeds my child 'junk'.ROFLMFAO

It is my choice which foods I feed my ds, I just feel that a lot of the comments on food are WAY OTT. Just what are we all to do? Maybe I should feed my ds formula until he is bloody 18 years of age, when he is legally in charge of himself.
Oh god, just remembered I didnt breast feed - line me up and shoot me now.

Why dont we all just grow our own bloody food!! (eat your heart out the good life)

BTW - 'Get over it' means 'please remove that chip (whoops it contains junk, maybe I should say stick of celery) from your shoulder about the fact that I feed cows milk to my ds'.

dadtypebloke · 25/11/2005 11:43

well said mumfor1sttime!

I was fed milk, sugar and all sorts of other evils as a child and i'm still alive and kicking (although I do have 28 fingers and wobbly bones due to Petit Felous (sp) junk taken as a child)

I hope you buy your son good Bupa care after feeding him the Petit! As he's doomed come 50 years of age!

bobbybob · 25/11/2005 18:35

Website says no solid food before 6 months is recommended. And then says 4-6 months for weaning. Huh?

Saline · 07/12/2005 14:35

I have just been reading through the thread and am surprised that nobody has mentioned Mums4 organic children's yogurt it only contains fruit and yogurt! no added sugar, sweeteners or fruit concentrates, which the Rachels one does. I was looking closely at the rachels little ones and it actually contains a lot of fruit concentrate, which is really bad for children's teeth. I buy Mums4 from Tesco but have also found it in Waitrose and on Ocado, my little boy loves it and he is 4

NannyL · 07/12/2005 18:57

I second that mums 4 organic yoghurts are GREAT!
