So... What are the best mince pies?

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 21/11/2005 12:15

.. and i don't mean the crappy standard ones. i mean the finest ones ever. i was always partial to tesco 'finest' and sainsbury 'taste the diff' but someone last year recommended the next step up on the posh scale to 'Duchy Originals' which i've bought but haven't tucked into yet.

which are the very very best in your opinions?

You need to do a list, top 5 mince pies!

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 28/11/2005 12:37

Girly - Tomorrow, after I've tasted the M&S ones. A list of top five with commentary.

Thought you'd love the Waitrose beauties.

Saw the mince pie list in the Times on Sunday as well and noticed the M&S Luxury were on top. Went to try and get some but they were sold out! Got some of their regular mince pies and found the filling a bit too powerful for my taste, but still, not a bad pie despite that.

Bagpuss30 · 28/11/2005 12:46

Have just skimmed thread, but Waitrose all butter are the best by far. ds1 (5) is out top taste tester and managed to polish off two in remarkably quick time yesterday. My only dilemma is that we need more of them and Waitrose is a 15 min car drive away and the roads are covered in snow. Ocado were out of stock last night too.

Pennies · 28/11/2005 12:52

BP what a nightmare. You are left stranded by nature without access to Waitrose mincepies. Also noted the Ocado deficiency last night. Yours is a woeful predicament and my heart goes out to you.

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 28/11/2005 12:56

LOL! pennies.

I'm just about to inhale another waitrose beauty.....

i've said it before and i'll say it again... those waitrose pies are superior. what a pie!!

Bagpuss30 · 28/11/2005 13:11

We only have one left now and you are making me very DC, I have to save mine for ds1 (dd and I have just scoffed the rest!).

LOL pennies, glad I'm not alone....

mummyhill · 28/11/2005 13:21

If the roads stay clear I may venture the 30min drive to nearest waitrose, otherwise i will have to content myself with asda's, but it is snowing quite heavily here. I am wondering if I will be able to get the car off steep drive to collect dd from nursery at 3.

DCNAYN - time for you to insert a disclaimer here methinks. Your review seems to have prompted MNers to venture out in inclement conditions, potentially risking life and limb simply to test your verdict. This is the stuff of big law suits.

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 28/11/2005 13:34

lol.. i was thinking the same! we have some seriously dedicated pie lovers on here don't we!?

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT DCNAYN DOES NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR INJURY, DAMAGE OR LOSS OF LIFE ASSOCIATED WITH TRAVELLING LONG DISTANCES TO OBTAIN MINCE PIES

are they the mini ones ore the full size bad boys?

Bagpuss30 · 28/11/2005 13:36

LOL . Actually, the Waitrose ones have even converted dh, who is usually a pie hater...

Bagpuss30 · 28/11/2005 13:37

Full sized Enid, but they are actually not that big compared to some.

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 28/11/2005 13:51

i had the full sized bad boys and i was actually impressed at how big they were. this is all very confusing.

i would imagine the mini ones taste identical.

OP posts:
Bagpuss30 · 28/11/2005 14:11

Have checked, the ones we have are mini but are very nearly the size of regular ones. Sorry for confusion.

FrenchKissUnderMistletoeGirl · 28/11/2005 14:19

DC, like all men, you tend to think things are bigger than they actually are

ahem

FrenchKissUnderMistletoeGirl · 28/11/2005 14:19

sorry, lowering the tone of conversation

again

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 28/11/2005 15:05

i won't hold it against you

321 messages in and none of us domestic goddesses have yet suggested a mincemeat recipe -so here goes....
One bag mixed fruit
6 slices of white bread - shredded
250g walnuts
half can Guinness
150 ml Port
150 ml Brandy
150 ml Rum
Next, open back door, throw icky mixed fruit in bin, spread shredded bread for birds, leave nuts next to trees for squirrels and re-enter house.
Drink Guinnesss, rum, brandy and port before staggering to M&S to buy some luxury mince pies, my personal number one.

Down with Mr Kipling, Jungle Book really was a much greater achievement than his minced sewage offering!!!

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 29/11/2005 09:06

LOL!

Jules - I've got the M&S ones sitting in front of me.

So.... I've got the M&S ones sitting in front of me and some somerfield ones as well which someone brought in which look a little 'budget' but i'm willing to include them in the taste test anyway. you never know, they may be the X factor.

Stay tuned for my taste test. I don't think I can hold back much longer...

M&S LUXURY DEEP FILLED MINCE PIES

Taste Test 29.11.05

VERDICT....

Initial impression is good. it's a large pie with suger on the top instead of icing suger and it has a nice little pattern on the top and one single little hole poked in the middle. The smell is weak

The pastry is nice. very buttery and a nice consistency. the filling is very good but a little bland compared to some of the others and, surprisingly, a little short.

Nice big chunks of gooey stuff in this pie.

Overall a good pie but not even close to the Waitrose Pie or even the Tesco pie!
