What does anyone cook bar sausages, steaks and burgers? Would anyone like to share some family/young child friendly meals from the barby please?

Thanks!

Lamb chops / whole lamb roasts
Fish (foil parcels with lemon/dill etc)
prawns - spicy etc
burgers - we do turkey, chicken, lamb, pork and beef versions
stuffed peppers
corn on the cob
marinated chicken thighs in a billion different sauces
halloumi

LaWeasel · 20/04/2011 14:25

Whole chicken/ducks.

Kebabs marinaded in fried onions, tomatoes, five spice and soy sauce.

Pootles2010 · 20/04/2011 14:28

My dad does a lovely butterflied leg of lamb - only problem is it takes a long time to cook, so sort of takes up the bbq and you can't really cook anything else on there.

goodegg · 20/04/2011 14:31

I make spiced lamb kebabs with fresh lamb mince, super easy and so much nicer than shop-bought lamb kebabs sometimes make my own burgers too but tbh you can't beat Tesco finest for burgers.

I also buy the thin chicken fillets and marinate them in stuff - sundried tomato paste, Thai curry paste, sweet chilli sauce etc and whack them straight on.

Not very adventurous otherwise, might try tuna steaks this summer. Watching with interest.

Pork Belly.

Oh Lordy ... feeling decidedly peckish now! Some lovely suggestions, thanks.

Whole side of salmon always looks impressive if having a few people over. Shrimp and veg kebabs too.

MummyAbroad · 20/04/2011 22:13

Tuna steak and mushrooms coated in garlic, parsley and olive oil. The tuna is just lightly seasoned and then I eat it with wasabi sauce. Yum.

Spare ribs
Prawns
Fish
anything really, DD loves making toast on ours Confused we have a perfectly good electric toasting machine not 5 metres away from where the BBQ is.

Another vote for butterflied leg of lamb or pork, usually in the cuban marinade from the Blistering Barbecues cookbook, which has loads of lovely recipes so worth looking out for in the library/book shop if you fancy something different. I use a hinged rack to make turning it over easier and usually have our big oildrum barbie going when I do this so I can do smaller bits on the other side. Or cook it early and double wrap in foil to rest and keep warm while the other bits do.

Another fab recipe from the same book is barbecued sweet potato wedges in cajun spice with sour cream and chive dip. Needs a hinged rack (I got mine in Home Bargains) but dead easy. Parboil chunky wedges of sweet potato until just tender to the point of a knife. Toss in olive oil and cajun spice and then barbecue in a hinged rack until the edges are slightly singed. I can't tell you how yummy these are.

tuna steaks are lovely bbq'd

also second halloumi

dreamingofsun · 21/04/2011 11:09

anthony warrell thompson's barbecue book is very good - some very easy marinades that make it look as if you've taken loads of care and don't require loads of obscure ingredients. i also use it during the winter to cook in oven/under grill.

JuicyLips · 21/04/2011 11:31

courgette and mushroom kebabs are good

FannyPriceless · 21/04/2011 11:47

Best tip for yummy, cheap and easy: get about 1 kg of chicken wings, splodge some Levi Roots Reggae sauce over them, chuck on the BBQ.

Lamb chops so easy and always yummy.

I second the mushroom and courgette kebabs. Veg friends have raved, esp when I brush them with a bit of crushed garlic, olive oil and lemon.

We also love roasting pork or lamb - usually something like a shoulder than I can stuff with something flavourful, tie up with string, and roast in the Weber.

If you thinly slice sweet potato it doesn't even need to be par boiled first. Top tip: brush with some maple syrup and chuck on the grill.

Don't forget salads: fresh yummy potato salad is fab even if potatoes are still a bit warm. Just splosh with olive oil, mayo, S+P and some fresh herbs.

Broad beans with chopped crispy pancetta are also a big hit.

Chilled Rose!Wine

We are champions of pulling together a yummy barbeque at a moment's notice. Come on over if it's sunny this afternoon!

JaxTellersOldLady · 21/04/2011 12:06

oh that all sounds so very nice!

Thinking of bbq ing tonight.

givemushypeasachance · 21/04/2011 12:11

Turkey kebabs marinaded with lots of lemon juice and lemon thyme, makes it really zingy and tender.
Kebabs with chunks of veg and pieces frankfurters and baby tomatoes on - very popular with kids!
Corn on the cob, but par-boil for a bit first to save time.

beanandspud · 21/04/2011 12:12

Fish cooked in newspaper is good on a barbecue:

I love BBQ's, we cook:

  • ribs (cook them in the oven first)
  • homemade burgers
  • spatchcock chicken (cook in the oven for 30 mins first)
  • halloumi cheese
  • all veggies but faves are: peppers, corn, portobello mushrooms (lovely with some olive oil, balsamic and parmesan in the middle), veggie kebabs (bits of peppers, cherry toms, shallots, mushrooms on skewers.
  • mackerel fillets
  • you can cook whole fish quite nicely in tinfoil
  • parboil new potatoes till almost cooked and finish on BBQ

Oh we love em!

AnonymousBird · 21/04/2011 13:01

Ribs
Chicken drumsticks
burgers
sausages
pork/beef steaks
Kebabs
Corn on the cob

Oh and yes, Halloumi, DH thinks it is the food of the devil but I adore it grilled/barbied.....

Can't wait to barbie tomorrow or Saturday!!! Smile

purpledrops · 21/04/2011 15:45

Kebabs are great cause you can have pieces that are already cut small for the children and you can do them with whatever you like best, sausages, onions, swt pepper, beef etc...

sueglitter · 21/04/2011 15:59

lamb is lovely with rosemary fresh from the garden towards the end I top it with tomatoes to make them more juicy!
Top tip desert: cut an unpeeled banana a couple of inches in about five different spaces then add either honey or stuff with chocolate then wrap it in aluminium foil and leave on the bbq for about 5 minutes serve with vanilla ice cream Blush

Taffeta · 21/04/2011 16:23

Cubed chicken thigh marinated in a yoghurt spice mix, then skewered. Serve with fresh coriander and raita in a flatbread [drool]

MrsFrin · 21/04/2011 18:50

Try wrapping raw asparagaus in either streaky bacon or parma ham if you're feeling flash, brush with olive oil, s&p and then bbq - delicious!

Conflugenglugen · 21/04/2011 19:43

A huge chunk of beef, or chicken legs and thighs, marinaded all day in white wine, soy sauce (pref. Kikkoman), garlic and chilli. Yum!
