So How Do You Like Your Apple Crumble?

passmyglassplease · 20/04/2011 14:07

With oats, or muesli
Cinnamon spiced apple with raisins
With other fruit such as pear, rhubarb, or others

I am cooking for 18 people this weekend and although I really like plain crumble, I much prefer it with something added especially cinnamon, however my DP prefers it plain.

Come and help me make up my mind as to what the crumble will eventually end up as. Grin

I love apple and cinnamon no raisins or sultanas and def not toffee flavoured, I also prefer just a plain crumble no oats or muesli

Clayhead · 20/04/2011 14:36

Plain! I just do a bog standard crumble.

4merlyknownasSHD · 20/04/2011 14:37

Plain fruit, oats in the meusli, and most importantly......cold the next day!

storminabuttercup · 20/04/2011 15:20

plain - and a good fruit to crumble ratio - more crumble that fruit

with cream not custard in the spring or summer

i'm rather particular about my crumble

winnybella · 20/04/2011 15:23

With cinnamon, but other than that plain.

Grandhighpoohba · 20/04/2011 16:03

Plain, with oats and brown sugar in the crumble. Must be made with cooking apples. Crumble reasonably thick but thin enough that some juice can bubble up at the sides and go sticky. Served with cream.

[fussy when it comes to crumble]

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 16:13

not at all, thanks!
I like rhubarb crumble, though.

Crumble with cinnamon sounds lovely.
:) yum yum

GwennieF · 20/04/2011 16:17

Plain. Apples cooked first with butter and sugar. Plenty of brown sugar in the topping and lots of demerara sprinkled on top so it's really crunchy. No oats/sultanas in the topping.

notcitrus · 20/04/2011 16:36

With oats (1/3 oats, 2/3 flour) and brown sugar but more sugar in the fruit than the topping. No sultanas, but lots of cinnamon. Sweet enough that it's not sharp, but not really sweet.
And evaporated milk (comfort food...)

Strix · 20/04/2011 16:48

With ice cream! Not cream. Not custard. No raisins/sultanas. Oats in the crumble, please. And not toffee.

Other fruits are okay (blackberries, rhubarb, pear).

mmmmmmmmmm....

I love crumble

pointydog · 20/04/2011 16:50

A plain, honest, straightforward crumble.

With a selection of thigns to go with it so I can choose from ice cream, cream etc.

TobyLerone · 20/04/2011 16:52

With oats and sometimes chopped hazelnuts in the crumble.

keep them coming ladies, I am erring on the side of plain apple with cinnamon in the topping.

I have one other question relating to this pudding

How many people with large appetites would a tesco (500g) pot of custard feed?

I have bought 3 pots of custard and a pot of creme fraiche, am now thinking that its not enough, what do you think?

OP posts:
TobyLerone · 20/04/2011 17:03

Definitely not enough custard. I'd buy another couple. And some cream.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 20/04/2011 17:06

With asmidge of Maple Syrup in with the apples.

With a little bit of chopped Marziplan in with the apples.

And always served warm, not hot.

[uberimportant]

GwennieF · 20/04/2011 20:03

Oooh... Marzipan in with the apples.... that sounds lovely! If only my DH liked almonds. Sad

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 20/04/2011 20:06

a little cinnamon
no other crap

and served hot, with cold custard or creme anglaise. proper stuff, mind - none of this Birds nonsense.

franke · 20/04/2011 20:07

I've been doing a Delia crumble recently which has almonds in the crumble - you whizz it up in the processor. It's yummy.

LittleWhiteWolf · 22/04/2011 13:47

Apple and cinnamon or Pear and chocolate chips. Or, if rhubarb, then just plain as the rhubarb is strong enough a flavour! Those are the three I make, although depending on time of year I might add blackberries to my apple crumble.

No faff for the crumble and serve hot with Cornish ice cream. Mmmm

boosmummie · 22/04/2011 13:51

Apple and cinnamon and a few oats in the crumble for good measure.

Rhubarb and orange or rhubarb and ginger.

Must be hot with vanilla icecream and cream and custard sometimes

Apple and Blackberry with plain crumble

apple and orange is also rather scrummy too.

Plum crumble with cinnamon

Peach and apple.

I like crumble me. Any way it comes but pear.

ilovecrisps · 22/04/2011 14:04

please please give me your crumble top recipes

I can't really cook but I'd love to be able to and I love crumble

(does anyone have a recipe for crumble cake)

I can cook the apples but really do you cook the pears first or put them in raw then let the crumble cooking do it?
do you always use sugar in the apples?

what ratio do you use for the crumble? and what ingredients?
how do you cook apple and orange crumble?

boosmummie · 22/04/2011 14:15

MY basic crumble topping is 8oz plain flour, 4 oz soft brown sugar, 4 oz butter (room temp) and 1 tsp baking powder. If I'm lazy I chuck it in the magimix or if not I do it with my fingers. Cinnamon to taste. If using oats or ground almonds I substitute 2oz of the flour with either. I tend to make double this and freeze and then it's just there to sprinkle for big crumbles or on ramekin sized ones for the kids.

I always use sugar in the apples as I use bramleys. Sometimes I stew the apples with 3 or 4 cloves and pared rind of one lemon (for 6-8 bramleys)

Stewed apple and orange:

6 Bramleys, peeled, cored and chopped
grated rind of 3 oranges
grated rind of one lemon
about 6fl oz orange juice
sugar to taste

Stew as normal. Lovely in crumble or just on cereal or with some ice cream.

ilovecrisps · 22/04/2011 14:21

Thankyou so much

ilovecrisps · 22/04/2011 14:22

ummm
how long do you cook it for?
