Just got a mag through the door - Action in Childcare & Early years - in it there is a great recipe to make Bonfire Night 'Catherine Wheel' biscuits!

Anyone interested (before I type it up!)

Ingredients

150g plain flour
pinch of salt
75g caster sugar
100g soft butter
2 different food colourings of your choice

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/ gas mark 4.
  2. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl and add the butter.
  3. Using your fingers, pinch together the flour and butter to form crumbs and then knead into a dough.
  4. Divide the dough into two and knead a few drops of food colouring into each half.
  5. Shape each piece into a sausage shape and roll out into a long, flat rectangle.
  6. Place one coloured rectangle on top of the other and gently roll up like a swiss roll.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut off slices about 1cm thick and you should have a colourful Catherine-wheel-like spiral.
  8. Lay the biscuits out on a greased baking tray and cook for 15 minutes.
  9. Allow the biscuits to cool, preferably on a wire rack, before enjoying.

Hey thanks for that, I'll make sure I've got all the stuff and they can have a go when they back from school.
Thanks again!

What would anyone here use then? I am hopeless when there is any call on my creativity!

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 11:13

erm... I'm not too good at stuff like that either!

Red and yellow? Red and green? Yellow and green? Green and blue? Red and blue?

Sorry - no help at all am I?!

OP posts:
Lonelymum · 03/11/2005 11:16

NO!!!!

Let me know what you used when you make them (as I presume you are going to).

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 11:57

OK I will!

Or maybe I wont make them as it may be a bit too confusing deciding which colours to use!

I know, I will ask the children what colours they would like to use - there! Job done!

I'm going ot have a go with DD after school. don't like using food colouring so I'm going to do one plain, and put cocoa power in the other half.

Just to confuse matters further....

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 12:12

Oohhh that sounds yummy!

Now then - colourings or cocoa powder?

Arrggghhhhhh?

I only have pink and yellow so that would be it

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 12:29

I think pink and yellow would be fine! Can you get pink food colouring? Dont think I have ever seen it.

But then I do live a sheltered life!

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 13:46

Ahhh I see! That explains it then. Mine are from Sainsburys!

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 17:28

So did anyone get round to making these yet?

I just wondered what they turned out like!
