Just got a mag through the door - Action in Childcare & Early years - in it there is a great recipe to make Bonfire Night 'Catherine Wheel' biscuits!

Anyone interested (before I type it up!)

I am waiting for you to do them!

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 18:40

Ha Ha Ha!

You will no doubt be waiting till next Bonfire Night!

I may, just may attempt to make them on Saturday!
Don't hold your breath though!

TBH with you, I don't see the kneeding a few drops of dye into the dough bit is going to work. I don't think that will result in a uniform colour. Maybe it isn't meant to?

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 18:44

Yeah I was wondering about that too! Would make a kind of marble effect do you think?

Hmmmmmmm Could you get a consistent clour by adding the colouring at an earlier stage do you think? Say add it to the butter first? No, stupid idea. I will wait for someone to report in!

gigglinggoblin · 03/11/2005 18:51

we made some! they are delish, very crunchy. colours arent very bright (suppose thats down to how much colouring you put in) but you can tell its there. swirls didnt work out exactly according to plan cos they were very difficult to roll out. ds (6) was helping aswell so they are all different sizes. worth a go tho

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 18:53

Awwww thanks for letting us know!

Sounds like they turned out ok!

Did the colour look like a marble effect then?

OP posts:
gigglinggoblin · 03/11/2005 18:54

if you kneed the dough for long enough it goes a uniform colour. the overall biscuit effect is more marbled than swirly, but that may be down to ds sqashing the roll as he was cutting it and me stretching them out again

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 18:57

Cool!

You have inspired me to try these out!

I spose I should as I was the one who started the thread!

gigglinggoblin · 03/11/2005 19:01

i did assume you had already done it when i saw this thread! now i realise i was just a guinea pig!

there were plenty of little jobs for ds to do so he enjoyed making them, and i shall probably enjoy scoffing the lot later

JenumGeranium · 03/11/2005 19:03

No I must admit, I have not made them yet

I am of course going to make them!

Just thought I would share my find!

Just made the choc ones - rememberd to add the sugar but not the salt! Hope they are ok, they are in the oven now.

They look FAB, really swirly! I put a bit more fat in that the recipe said, 'cos the dough was a bit too dry for rolling, so fingers crossed.

I made double mixture (pig) in 2 separate bowls and took out 2 tablespoons of flour from the "choc" one and put in 1 oz of cocoa.

I'll let you know how they taste in about 20 minutes time (with a burnt mouth, cos I can never wait!)

MamaG · 04/11/2005 16:37

ok, 15 minutes now up and they're not ready! Oh bloody hell, looks like I'm gonna burn them now, it's what usually happens.

Serves me right for feeling like Smug Domestic Goddess type, instead of Nightmare Housewife

sweetmonkey · 04/11/2005 16:38

i left mine in for about 15-20 mins if that helps at all. they were on the top shelf too

MamaG · 04/11/2005 16:42

Now been in for 21 mins and still look pale!

Do they go golden or anything?!

sweetmonkey · 04/11/2005 16:44

only slightly golden. i just poked them to see if they were firm and stuff.

what shelf do you have them on

JenumGeranium · 04/11/2005 16:48

Oh I didnt even realise about the sugar bit!

It doesnt say anything about the sugar in the method bit - only in the ingredients, so not really my fault as I just copied it out!

Well spotted!

sweetmonkey · 04/11/2005 16:49

i putthe sugar in with the flour and salt and then added the butter

MamaG · 04/11/2005 17:02

Thanks sweetmonkey, they were on the top shelf and I did as you said and poked them! They are now cooling and look excellent!

MamaG · 04/11/2005 17:12

They are scrumptious. Just having one now with a cup of coffee (and they're huge!!!)

Bang goes the diet (excuse the pun...bang...catherine wheel...never mind!)

They are really swirly too!
