How can I make chocolate bendy?

I need to make an easter bonnet for DS and DH came up with the idea of a chocolate one. I have a tub that fits on DS's head and I'm going to coat it with chocolate, but the tub needs to flex a little to fit. I thought that melting it with a little syrup might work or would that just make it sticky?

Any suggestions?

PS Intending to use really cheap chocolate flavoured stuff from Tesco

I have no idea really. What about using a bit of liquid glucose? It might work. Alternatively, why not see if you can get some brown fondant icing and use a thick layer of that on the tub. The thicker it is, the less likely it will set hard. No sure even that will work though.

It doesn't have to flex much so think I will try syrup.This is "homework" for DS who is only in nursery - what am I going to be like when he's actually at school!

Buy an old hat from a charity shop and a ribbon/straw and stick artificial flowers, ears of wheat, birds and eggs on it.

1g Iota Carrageenan
225ml water

225ml Cream
55g Sugar
120g Chocolate, at least 60%
19.5g LM 20AS Pectin

Disolve the Iota in the water with an immersion blender. Heat the cream and sugar to a boil, stiring from time to time. Pour over the chocolate (like making a ganache), and stir slowly so as not to incorporate air. Add iota/water mix, bring to a boil and add pectin. Boil for 20-30 seconds. Pour through a chinois into a 9" x 9" x 2" (or equivalent size to fashion said bonnet....!) tray lined with cling film. Chill and mould....

You can get the Iota Carrageenan from these people.

However you could also cheat and buy this modelling chocolate from these people..... Grin

Grin @Driftwood. It is only going to be on the head for a few minutes and I thought it would be a nice idea for the kids to then eat, no? Perhaps I haven't thought this through

hahahaha. I'd go with some twigs, fluffy chicks from pound shop and mini eggs then Grin Trust me - you will be making Easter bloody Bonnets for some years yet. I think I have probably helped my older children with at least 7 each. DD3 can fashion straw nests with her hair so I'll just add to it when the time comes.

Do krispie cake mix but the cocoa powder-butter-golden syrup version.

If you mix it with crumbled shredded wheat it looks like a birds nest and is really healthy.

If you mix it with crumbled shredded wheat and dried fruit eg raisins it REALLY looks like a bird's nest Grin

Make a head-sized nest, fill with mini eggs and fluffy chicks, total outlay around a quid

I made a batch of chocolate goo up last year at youth club - all my 13-19 year olds loved crumbling up the shredded wheat, mixing in the gloop and decorating with chicks and eggs. Some of the results made it out the door intended for younger siblings and parents Shock 'Twas tres amusing Grin

If you put it on a plastic plate with ribbons underneath, it'll stay on for a few minutes and not get goo in her hair. Green icing/marzipan leaves, a few fresh flowers maybe if you're going to go properly over the top LOL

If you melt it and mix it with liquid glucose it makes a dough like plasticine. Works really well.

Fabulous ideas.
DH and I have being planning and we have sort of decided that we are going to cover the plastic tub that we have melted and moulded to fit DS's head with chocolate rice crispies, throwing on some mini eggs.

However, I don't think I make rice crispie cakes properly as all I do is melt the cheap chocolate and stir in rice krispies and it is a bit too brittle. Any suggestions as to how I can make it less brittle and non-sticky?

Midori would the liquid glucose work for that do you think?

BTW I am TOTAL aware I am REALLY over thinking this Grin

I'm a bit rubbish at measuring, but it usually works...

Gently melt a lump of butter about the size of the head of a wooden spoon, a couple of oz of sugar, 2 dessert spoons of golden syrup and a tablespoon or two of cocoa in a pan. Turn of the heat and stir in the cereal.

Or use a real recipe Grin

Oh no, the best way is with chocolate AND golden syrup Grin

The cocoa powder is my emergency recipe! And in this instance would be less wasteful of actual chocolate

Another way is to boil 1 1/2 cups of sugar or sweetener with 1/2 a cup of milk and 1tbsp cocoa powder for one minute then stir into cereal/oats.

For chocolate I will be using the REALLY cheap chocolate flavoured stuff not ACTUAL chocolate.

Sorry, forgot about this.

Liquid glucose is the same thing as corn syrup, so yes, just use it instead. I've done it quite a bit and you can use dark, milk or white chocolate and it is really easy.

Ooh, or this for a base:
1lb icing sugar
1/2 a bag of marshmallows
knob of butter
2tbsp golden syrup

Melt all except icing sugar over a gentle heat. When melted, stir into icing sugar. Shape and refrigerate for a couple of hours.

You could make a marshmallow fudge helmet then put the nest on top! Please please please post pics when you've made whatever you decide to do Grin

I will post a pic once I have finished my masterpiece DS's homework. I can pretty much guarantee it will look NOTHING like the fabulous image I have in my head Grin and I fear you will all be very disappointed!
