bad experience with an organic broccoli!!! [shock]

I am never buying organic produce again! I took a head of organic broccoli out of my fridge yesterday and cut a few bits off to cook for the kid's dinner when I noticed a rather large, black, hairy caterpillar sitting on the bit in my hand. I chucked it in the bin, washed my hands and returned to the head of broccoli prepared to give it a second chance. At this point however I realised the entire thing was covered, not only in big, fat, hairy, black caterpillars, but also dozens of tiny little yellow larvae caterpillars. A bloody egg must have hatched inside the thing!! And I'm pretty sure at least some of them were still alive because by the time the I returned to the bin, the original caterpillar had crawled it's way to the top. ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh. Give me pesticides any day!!!!!

Sugarmag - My Gran grew broccoli once. We were all totally impressed by it! Until we started eating it and it too was COVERED in cooked caterpillars! I noticed them after my Mum had eaten hers.

TinyGang · 26/10/2005 11:50

Extra nutrition!

Blu · 26/10/2005 11:50

We always had to pick the caterpillars off cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, whether shop bought or home grown.
Can't cope with food that has any connection with NATURE?

Pass em here I could do with a snack. yummy!!!!

scotlou · 26/10/2005 11:53

I've found live caterpillars on non-organic, shrink wrapped, Tesco broccoli too. Just take extra care when washing it.

moondog · 26/10/2005 11:53

Very good sign imho.

My cosin's kids shocked me when they came round for dinner and I served a (organic natch!) roast chicken.

One pulled a face and said
'Urrgh, look Mum. it's got bones in it and everything!'

Jeeez.....

QueenVictoria · 26/10/2005 11:54

you see THATS why organic is better, all that extra protein in the veg....

Nightynight · 26/10/2005 12:13

moondog
feed them slugs next time.

caterpillars, fantastic, a sign that it doesnt have horrible pesticide residues. just fling'em out into the garden, they'll eat or be eaten.

eldestgirl · 26/10/2005 12:28

That's what my Dad always said when we discovered something a little "extra" in his home grown vegetables, "LOVELY! PROTEIN!"
I like caterpillars, though not on my plate. They aren't dirty are they? Just potential butterflies. (I need a hippy emoticon.)

we have organic brocolli. A few weeks ago I steamed it & when I took it out a green baldy looking caterpillar feel out...on my plate ( I switched plates with DH). Since then, I cut brocolli into smaller pieces & give it ALL to my hubby

We still have organic though

freakyzebra · 26/10/2005 13:33

I found some huge green cabbage white caterpillars in a non-organic cabbage, not long ago. I didn't know that they could grow that big.

LilacBump · 26/10/2005 13:34

in school we learnt to wash veg like brocoli and cauliflower in salty water to kill off any beasties on it.

My organic brocolli was from ASDA too - I was worried it might have died a horrible death, but we decided it must have sufforcated in the clingfilm wrapping instead

Mojomummy · 26/10/2005 13:53

broccoli even

iota · 26/10/2005 13:56

my parents used to grow a lot of their own veg -- and my childhood job was usually picking it over and washing it in salted water to kill of the flies catepillars and bugs.

this takes me back to the good old days [sigh]

LilacBump · 26/10/2005 13:59

i did find the most enormous insect in between the bananas on a bunch of organic bananas. i didn't even check if it was dead or not, it went straight in the bin.

NannyL · 26/10/2005 19:05

You are lucky.... just this sunday lunch time a catterpillar (HUGE AND FAT) was in our broccoli (NOT organic) we didnt notice tho until i was half way through my dinner and he APPEARED on my fork

i was nearly sick

Sugarmag · 27/10/2005 08:37

My offending broccoli was from Asda too!

the thing is, I can cope with beasties when they are outside where they belong. So if I was growing my own veg I'm sure I would expect to find a few caterpillars which could be disposed of before the food reached my kitchen. But when they appear in my house and even worse, in my fridge that's just crossing a line!!!! [insert skin crawling emoticon]

Customer
Excuse me, but there are catapillars in my organic broccoli

ASDA
Don´t worry madam, they won´t eat much

hoolagirl · 29/10/2005 23:48

Oh my god, i would be sick if that happened (phobia about insects) Think I will buy frozen veg!

Scaryskribble · 30/10/2005 00:00

Aw Ive never had anything in my veg, feel like I am missing out now .

paolosgirl · 30/10/2005 00:04

My dad used to grow his own veg and fruit, and I have vivid memories of caterpillars, flies and larvae on my plate [barf emoticon].

Now as an adult, I can enjoy my pesticide-laden, insect-matter free veg, and it tastes goooood
