Someone put me out of my misery and tell me which food processor to buy

My old and cheap food processor died a painful death on Christmas Eve (just as I was about to start preparing food for Christmas day - naturally). I've spend the past 3 months dithering and procrastinating what I should buy to replace it. All the "helpful" review sites contradict the previous site i've looked at. Some love the Magemix and some say its the worst purchase they've ever made. Same with the Kenwood.
I'm prepared to pay for a decent one. I've been looking at Kenwood's (FP920, 720, 730) and Magemix's (4200 and 5200).
Please PLEASE could someone give me some advice and tell me (and I mean that, TELL ME what to buy). I'd be v v grateful and it would mean that I'l stop boring the pants of everyone else in my house Sad.

So Nickel, what i'm hearing is that I should sneak into my mum's house and "gently persuade" her to give me her old kenwood chef Grin?

I've got a Kenwood Multipro libra which gets used several times/week.

I love it because it has built in scales which weigh ingredients as you add them. Fab.

Although it has the same problem as the magimix when I use the small bowl.

(As an aside I also have a Kitchen Aid mixer that I use for baking, so don't really use the food processor for that aside from Nigella's cupcakes)

I think overall though the magimix food processors get a better write up than the kenwood ones (Just to add to your confusion!)

I don't bake so have a Magimix food processor.
If I could bake, I would get a Kenwood Chef for mixing etc.
Have had my Magimix for nearly 15 years and still going strong.

In terms of dough, I do use my magimix to make some basic dough without any problems. However, I do a version of the Dan Lepard mixing so it is a couple pulses, then leave alone for a bit, then repeat the pulsing and leaving alone.

I am planning on investing on a kitchenaid mixer. The one huge advantage of the kitchenaid is the ice cream attachment which I know I would use (plus saves me from also purchasing an ice cream maker!).

ermm wonka - firstly - it doesn't chop and stuff like I need it to (don't really need a mixer) and secondly it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price bracket Smile

I treat myself to a new Kenwood Prospero just before Xmas, & I LOVE it, whisks everything brilliantly, makes great pastry, bread & cakes & lovely to clean & MUCH sturdier than my old Kenwood Multi pro, it was my 2nd & I found the handles break far too easily

I've had 1 mishap with the new blender jug, as it has a removable base, which differs from the multi pro - & I didn't realise & tighten it - DDs smoothie EVERYwhereHmm .....the machine cleaned up a treat though - its not a cheap 1, but find its so good, I use it a lot more than I did my old one :)

Wonka/Rockinhippy - it looks like that one can be used to mix like a Kenwood Chef and chop like a Magimix. Is that right? (sound of Jonah getting a little excited)

yes - the only thing it lacks is a coffee/spice grinder, the citrus juicer on it is pretty okay too :)

I have Kenwood FP735 - it is really good (although has lots of attachments I don't use)

I won a kitchen aid (no way I would be able to afford one otherwise) and so do pastry, dough, cakes etc in that but before I had it certainly pastry & cakes came out fine. It has a dough mixer which made dough fine but it would need hand kneading also.

I've had it for 2 years & still use it for chopping etc at least twice a week & would definitely recommend it

Jonah - yes, ask your mum for hers!
you can normally get the basic chef for £300 (the £1000 was a major!).

yes, a Kenwood Chef is different from a Food Processor, but because of all the different attachments you can get, the Chef becomes a food processor - all-in-one Grin

I take it back - amaxon has a chef for £173

with the chef, you get the jug, too.

Baroque, hope you love it :) Be careful seating the spindle thing that takes the blade: if you aren't you run the risk of running the thing wonky & shearing the top off the chopping blade. Luckily if you do Kenwood are very understanding & will send you a replacement
