What's the best brand of Pesto?

And yes,I know it's easy to make, and no I'm not making it. I won't touch parmesan for anyone, and I don't even like pesto.

TIA

Sacla

LetThereBeRock · 25/02/2011 16:51

Thankyou Moondog.Smile When I saw your name I thought you were going to tell me to make it anyway.Grin

I'll get that then, even though it's ghastly stuff, pesto in general, it's probably the best of a bad bunch.

No no. Not Sacla (sorry Moondog). It doesn't even use proper parmesan.

I like the Stark Naked one - it comes in two handy portions (I'm assuming you buy it for someone else in the family!).

The Waitrose Cooks INgredients one is good too.

Pesto Martini?[green] That sounds awful.

OP posts:
moondog · 25/02/2011 17:04

I stand corrected Bling.

Let, i am a complete food snob aye, but could not be arsed to make it either. It's a quick and easy thing for kids in our house. I don't eat it.

On same subject, wtf are those weird 'pestos' you get now? Red pepper and rocket and so on. Vom

LetThereBeRock · 25/02/2011 17:04

Or Envy.

WipsGlitter · 25/02/2011 17:04

Scale is vile. Sorry. I get a fresh one from sainsburys. The red and green one are both nice.

Hey!!! Is someone taking my name in vain Wink Grin

LetThereBeRock · 25/02/2011 17:07

I thought you'd consider ready made pesto to be on a par with the sin of buying ready made pasta sauces,Moondog.Grin
I'm somewhat relieved that it isn't the case.

It's for a friend's children. It amazes me that the majority of children seem to like the stuff, when it's a vivid green and strongly flavoured.

OP posts:
moondog · 25/02/2011 17:09

People who buy ready made pasta sauces need disemboweling but pesto??

Life's too short. [green]

I'm getting a bit fed up with fetshisation of food to be honest. So bloody pretentious.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/02/2011 17:11

DD likes that red pepper pesto shite. I can't stand it tbh.

pirateparty · 25/02/2011 17:12

The fresh one from Sainsbury's is really good, but has a shorter sell-by date and is in the fridge.

If you want a keep-in-the-store
-cupboard one then ds rates Sacla too, but it has cashew nuts (not pine nuts) and pecorino so isn't a true pesto, but much loved in this house and really handy when stocks and inspiration running low!

LetThereBeRock · 25/02/2011 17:13

I like some ready made pasta sauces, but we've discussed that before.Grin

The tv chefs are always going on about how easy it is to make your own pesto, but if even you can't be bothered then perhaps it isn't half so easy and quick as they say.

I've had ready made, and homemade. It still tastes like a cow's stomach contents imho,no matter if it was made by hand or produced en masse in a factory.

Sacla is vile, as is Jamie's Hideously Expensive Version.

I get the Waitrose green basil pesto, it is yummy.

noddyholder · 25/02/2011 17:14

The red pepper one is lovely M and s do a good natural green pesto much runnier than the typical jar stuff and really delicious

Life's too short to toast pine nuts, and then wizz them to mush in a blender.

I like deconstruced pesto, it's a lot bloody easier (just throw some basil leaves, toasted pine nuts and grated parmesan and salt over some cooked pasta)

NettoSuperstar · 25/02/2011 17:16

Make it, you lazy sodGrin

OK, someone had toBlush

I don't mind Sacla, but tbh, if I'm using pesto from a jar, I'm not that bothered about the quality, I've already decided we're having ready made food that night, and for that reason, I also have Cheapo Asda red and green pesto in the cupboard.
They taste not bad as it happens.

LetThereBeRock · 25/02/2011 17:17

Hummus is another popular food that I don't understand the appeal of. It's vile.

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/02/2011 17:19

Hummus is lovely, but again 'WTF?' to people who make their own.

NettoSuperstar · 25/02/2011 17:29

I make my own.
Really, it's so quick and easy, though it doesn't keep well.
I find that not a problem with my mouth aroundGrin

I have a mini chopper, it cost £10ish on Amazon, and you bung a few bits in, and then have hummus, or pesto, or curry paste, or such.

SquigglePigs · 25/02/2011 17:47

Waitrose frozen one (in individual portions) is pretty good. Especially when only one person in thouse likes it!
