What is Irish food???

My family is Irish but I am still coming up with a bit of a blank. School is having a St. Pat's Day celebration. Mass in the morning, then concert in the afternoon followed by food, a sort of a tea party type thing - with 'traditional Irish food' But what is that apart from drink laced porter cake or toddy cake? My mothers baking was always more continental than traditional Irish.

Any suggestions?

Soda bread, scones, spotted dog (white soda bread with currants in). Also apple cake or tart, v traditional. Rhubarb tart too.

Bramshott · 15/02/2011 13:39

Barm brack definitely.

DurhamDurham · 15/02/2011 13:44

Mmmm...I'm getting hungry!

Soda bread is delicious, especially with butter and jam.

You can buy tinned Irish stew if you haven't got time to cook.

I would send in a selection of soda bread, Irish cheddar, cooked bacon, Tayto crisps, Club Orange to drink.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/02/2011 13:46

Rock shandy, red lemonade, Chef sauce....

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/02/2011 13:46

Galtee cheese

chubbleigh · 15/02/2011 13:48

You see, there is a bit of theme going on here, bread and butter and fruit cake. My mother and her sisters would relish this, washed down with cups and cups of tea.

Whilst smoked salmon and Dublin Bay prawns would be lovely we are not related to Powerscourt.

Spread white or black pudding on your soda bread then :)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/02/2011 13:50

Me the pauper that is!

stripeywoollenhat · 15/02/2011 13:52

i'd go for crab sandwiches (fresh soda bread) and guinness (for adults), followed by apple cake. i have an apple cake recipe which was traditionally cooked in a pot on the fire, but you can do it in an oven - it's easy and delicious: this one by darina allen is roughly the same

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/02/2011 13:53

Do you know what I love? Spice burgers. I could really go for a spice burger now.
