So. Wholemeal pasta. Edible or yuk?

I love pasta... Too much.

I remember having Wholemeal pasta once, it was horrible. But then I was a kid and much less open to healthy changes in diet!

Can it ever be nice? Disguised in lots of sauce? Worth a try?

no,it's cardboard

FreudianSlippery · 10/02/2011 07:05

Really? Always? :(

I thought Wholemeal pizza bases would be awful but actually it was nice.

I don't like it either. But you probably have to get used to it.

gorionine · 10/02/2011 07:09

I buy wholemeal pasta, usually shops own brand and I never had a complain from anyone at home. The first time I thaught they tasted a bit "cinamony" (if there is such a word) but got over it quickly. The only "normal" pasta I buy are macaroni (about twice a year)because I have never been able to find wholemeal ones.

monkey9237 · 10/02/2011 07:09

Its yuk! But Waitrose Bronze extruded (whatever that is!) wholewheat pasta is an acceptable one that doesnt taste manky...

ClaireDeLoon · 10/02/2011 07:13

We use it (DP diabetic and slow release carbs better for sugar levels) and don't mind it. Was quite surprised it was OK as expecting to hate it. It's Waitrose own brand we use.

HelenBa · 10/02/2011 07:19

Some are really horrible and seem to disintegrate but I have used Barilla's and quite like it with a punchy tomato-based sauce (would be disgusting with a creamy sauce though)

seaweedhead · 10/02/2011 07:22

I find it perfectly edible. It's got a stronger flavour than white pasta so it takes some getting used to.

FreudianSlippery · 10/02/2011 07:37

Thanks. No way could I stop buying normal pasta altogether but I thought it might be worth having occasionally in a very strong sauce!

Those of you who do eat it, any suggestions for disguising sauces?

Anyone know if you can get coloured (tomato/spinach) whole pasta?

I use both and at one stage the DCs actually prefered the wholemeal one.

SquigglePigs · 10/02/2011 07:44

We only use wholemeal. Best way to introduce it is to have 50/50 wholemeal and white for a while til you get used to the slightly stronger taste and slightly firmer texture.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 10/02/2011 07:45

I honestly can't see a problem with it and we like both kinds...white and wholemeal, we have tesco's own brand a lot.

sybilfaulty · 10/02/2011 07:49

I do what squiggles does and use half and half. I figured if I bought wholemeal bread and brown rice (which again I know lots of people don't like) it was abit odd to buy white pasta.

It's fine on its own with a strong sauce.

kayah · 10/02/2011 07:57

have been using wholemeal for about 8 years now, I actually prefer it to ordinary one

MumsieNonna · 10/02/2011 14:33

It is edible and has a slight 'bite' to it, and it's very lovely in cauliflower cheese or pasta bakes.

nannyl · 10/02/2011 15:59

i positively LIKE whole meal pasta

though it takes a bit longer to cook.

halfcaff · 10/02/2011 16:01

Can't see anything wrong with it myself - jaded palate probably! I love wholemeal spaghetti (Sainsburys) with cheese sauce and veg. [tummy rumble emoticon]

BlooKangaWonders · 10/02/2011 16:03

sainsburys wholewheat spaghetti is fab! BUT you have to get used to the fact that it's not flabby like white pasta...

alarkaspree · 10/02/2011 16:04

It would taste okay but has a horrible sandy texture. Just wrong.

Brown rice I find delicious, but I'm rarely organised enough to start cooking rice 50 minutes before I want to eat it.

BecauseItoldYouSo · 10/02/2011 16:07

We only eat wholemeal pasta and don't have a problem with it, however it must not be overcooked. If it is overcooked then it it worse than normal overcooked pasta.

GrimmaTheNome · 10/02/2011 16:08

I prefer wholemeal pasta. DD thinks its yuk.

Seeds of Change do a half-wholemeal one, rigatoni I think, which is nice.

FreudianSlippery · 10/02/2011 16:33

Thanks all :) I will give it a try! Tentatively.

I use it, and prefer it, especially the spaghetti. It is more filling than white pasta so you don't need as much.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/02/2011 16:52

I use wholemeal spaghetti, probably 2/3rds wholemeal and 1/3rd white. You don't even realise with a bolognese sauce.

Other pasta I stick to white though.

Agree about whole rice, yum. I can't stand white rice except in a risotto - it tastes of nothing.
