SamboM · 05/09/2003 11:55

due to allergy or due to carrots are yucky? How about banana cake then?

codswallop · 05/09/2003 11:58

yukky! he will have flapjack - i dont think it will be wrenched from his hand by the playgorund mafia

SamboM · 05/09/2003 12:00

OK here we go

4oz Butter
1oz Sugar
2 Tablespoons golden syrup
8oz rolled oats
half teaspoon salt

Beat fat and sugar till creamy, stir in warmed syrup (not hot!) Work in oats and salt.

Put into a VERY WELL GREASED tin with straight sides and press it all down quite hard.

Bake at Mark 5/ 375 F for 30 - 40 mins till firm and golden brown. Cut into finger shapes while warm but leave in tin to cool. Then take it out once cooled.

They are chewy and delicious and I want some NOW!

codswallop · 05/09/2003 12:04

i guess that if you added some raisins and chopped apricots they'd be a bit healthier as then they'd be eating some fruit too.

SamboM · 05/09/2003 12:17

Hmm think it would ruin them myself.

kayleigh · 05/09/2003 12:22

it's a preference thing i guess. i'd rather eat them plain too. But if i was making them for my ds2 (ds1 won't touch flapjacks or any type of cereal bar) I would definitely add some fruit as hiding it is only way he will eat it.

SoupDragon · 05/09/2003 12:58

Coddy, even my non vegetable eating DSs eat carrot cake muffins. Grate it really finely, add enough spice and they don't know it's there. I've done chocolate & courgette before too.

codswallop · 05/09/2003 13:12

spice soupy? you are being adventurous!

ds2 is much easier btw

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 05/09/2003 13:22

Mixed spice covers the taste of the carrot and also the colour helps mask the orangeness of the grated carrot

marthamoo · 05/09/2003 13:23

Malt loaf? That's what I used to give ds1 for a "healthy snack" (won't eat fruit). Lot easier than baking! Now he just starves as the fruit police give all the children a piece of free fruit and he isn't allowed an alternative.

marthamoo · 05/09/2003 13:24

P.S. What's wrong with Nigella's flapjacks? Or is it just Nigella per se?

kmg1 · 05/09/2003 14:36

SoupDragon - are those Susan Reimer's muffin recipes? DH enjoys chocolate and courgette muffin, but only if I don't tell him what they are! If I tell him he claims they're horrid. Now he looks suspiciously at any 'chocolate' ones I make, to try and decide whether he's supposed to like them or not!

Yes, I did say DH ... the kids love them all!

SoupDragon · 05/09/2003 14:41

If she wrote the "fast and fantastic" muffin book (or something like that), then yes!

Eeek · 05/09/2003 14:46

NIgella's flapjacks recipe doesn't work IME - and I dont' think it's just me - there was a think in the paper about it. They turned out like expensive sawdust
