What should I sit my baby when I start weaning her?

This maybe sounds like a stupid question, but I am hoping to start weaning my daughter next week and I wondered if anyone had any advice as to what I should set her in while I give her the first solids? As she can't sit up herself I assume I can't use a highchair or booster seat but she has a bouncy chair that she likes, could I just use that?

This is my first baby and I do feel a real amateur sometimes!

Bouncy chair was favourite in our household although I did wish afterwards that I'd bought one with a removable washable cover!!

tamum · 30/08/2003 16:08

I used a bouncy chair too, it's not a stupid question at all! With my ds (who was always rather fearful) I held him in the crook of my arm the very first time I put a spoon in his mouth, but I didn't need to do it afterwards (or even then, probably )

Thank you all for the help, I will remember to cover her clothes and the chair!

I am excited about starting her on solids its just all so new and good fun!!

bouncy chair or as she gets older do you have a car sear which comes out of the car(tracel system idea)i find this useful as dd used to manage to get upright in bouncy chair even before she could sit herself .

maomao · 02/09/2003 16:48

Hi Cherelynn,

I'm hoping to start solids this week too, and was wondering how it is all going for you! What foods are you starting with? And were there signs your daughter was giving you that indicated that she was wanting solids? Any tips for clean-up?

(Obviously this is my first baby too!)

Please let me know how it's going, if you get a chance.

I never liked the idea of feeding a baby in a bouncy chair because ours was too "laid back" and it seemed to make them choke more. Did occasionally feed in a car seat but that was nearly as bad. However, if you haven't bought a highchair yet there's several on the market that have an adjustable seat so you can get just the right amount of support.

Lara2 · 03/09/2003 08:53

I used the car seat until they could sit up by themselves. It does help to have a spare cover though, in case they vomit all over it!! Also used the bouncy chair - whatever works for you. Agree with twiglet, we are all amateurs to start - don't worry, you'll be a pro in no time and wonder why you ever worried!!

Or you could try the bumbo - cheapest price seems to be from Grobag, \linkwww.grobag.com/{}, but I think Mothercare also sell them now. I presonally just sat ours on my knee with no bad memories, but for number 3 I'm getting a bumbo, as it's the only thing I don't already have - my one & only baby purchase.
Doubt the link will work, I'm a tech. idiot, you'll just have to copy & paste, sorry! (It was my 1st ever attempt tho)

monkey · 03/09/2003 09:01

why did my brackets move to the end - they def. weren't there, even in the preview. I give up.

mears · 03/09/2003 10:09

I sat my babies on my knee - did no-one else do that?

jasper · 03/09/2003 12:59

I sat my babies on your knee too mears, when it was available

DebL · 03/09/2003 13:20

loads of cushions propped on the floor. (pushing dog away with other arm!!)

Bumbo only OK if they can sit without flopping over.

mears · 03/09/2003 14:48

LOL Jasper. Will need to catch up soon

tinyfeet · 03/09/2003 15:09

We also used the bouncy chair. I now have a booster chair that we are using for my 18 month old, which is made by First Years or Safety First (I always get them confused). The chair has a setting where you can tilt it back so that it is more appropriate for a little one's first solids. For my next baby, I think I will use that chair on the tilted back setting. HTH.

maomao · 03/09/2003 15:48

A "bumbo," eh? I thought that was what I was, fumbling about with my first child! I shall have to check it out, thanks!

laa · 03/09/2003 15:52

we use a bouncy chair and cover DD with a tea towel & bib. Have tried on my knee but devastatingly messy due to raspberry blowing!!

Cherelynn · 04/09/2003 12:17

Thanks for all your help, I have decided to buy one of those highchairs that tilt over as I will need to buy a highchair anyways and she does really go for it bouncing in her bouncy chair (obviously)so I would be scared that I choked her!
Maomao-it doesn't look like I am going to be starting weaning this week anyway as my dd seems to be off her food, I think this is becuase she is having bother with her teeth (dribbling loads, hand never out of her mouth and very red cheeks). Does teething put babies of their food? See, I'm hopeless, I figure it has put her off her food but I've really no idea if it does! One of the reasons I thought she was ready to start was she was finishing all her bottles but now she doesn't quite make it with most of them. She also stares really hard at everything I eat, it makes me feel pretty mean and has kind of put me off eating in front of her! How are you getting on, have you started yet?

Well, my daughter lacks teeth, but not the drool! She chomps on her fist and anything else she can get in her mouth. She started tracking our movements as we ate, and making smacking noises as we chewed. So....

We started two days ago with some rice cereal mixed with formula. I began by putting a tiny amount on my pinky for her to suck, but she would have none of it. She wanted it from the spoon. Now she tries to guide the spoon to her mouth (her technique is quite hit or miss). I also did a wee bit of banana pushed thru a seive so that it was milky. She loved that too. It's quite a messy endeavor, eventhough she eats only a teaspoon or so of solids!

Just checked one of my parenting books, and it indicates that teething can indeed cause a baby to refuse to feed (tho' some will never miss a meal). It suggests that you offer cool, mushy foods to help ease inflamed gums....

Keep me posted about your progress, Cherelynn, if you can!

a bumbo?

maomao · 04/09/2003 16:48
