i have a bag of "washed potatoes" (unopened) with "Display until 16th September". Can I use them or should I chuck em?!

OP posts:
flamebat · 28/09/2005 12:41

Open em and feel em... I would say squidgy gets chucked

spacedonkey · 28/09/2005 12:41

I would use em if they aren't green and haven't sprouted

QueenOfQuotes · 28/09/2005 12:41

wash 'em and see what they look like, if they're all soft and squashy - then chuck 'em, if they look and 'feel' normal - use 'em

cutekids · 28/09/2005 12:42

Cheers for that,Spacedonkey and Flamebat.

How do they look, smell and feel? If they're green, chitting, smell musty and feel soft then sling them. Otherwise, you might be OK.

CarolinaMoon · 28/09/2005 12:43

what's chitting?

WigWamBam · 28/09/2005 12:44

Chitting is when they start to sprout - the little white sprouty bits are the chits.

NomDePlume · 28/09/2005 12:45

Is it bad that I just cut the little sprouty bits off, then ?!

CarolinaMoon · 28/09/2005 12:45

ooh, I've never heard that name for them before. Where's that from?

jamiesam · 28/09/2005 12:45

Me too

WigWamBam · 28/09/2005 12:46

Depends on how big the chits are!

jamiesam · 28/09/2005 12:46

More facts...

WigWamBam · 28/09/2005 12:47

I don't know where it comes from - it's just the word for a potato shoot. Gardeners call it that as well.

flamebat · 28/09/2005 12:49

I cut me chits off too

flamebat · 28/09/2005 12:50

I read somewhere that its ok to eat raw potatoes as long as they aren't green or chitty.

QueenOfQuotes · 28/09/2005 12:56

I cut my "chits" off too - as long as they're not 'too' big (ie they wouldn't have rooted themselves if left in soil LOL)

jamiesam · 28/09/2005 12:57

bleurgh - raw potatoes (sp?) taste disgusting!

Still not sure what I'm doing to myself/ds's by feeding us chitted potatoes (do cut the chits off)

SherlockLGJ · 28/09/2005 13:07

PMSL

Only on MN, could a simple thread about potatoes, end up in a discussion about the origin of the word chits.

I love this place.

WigWamBam · 28/09/2005 13:08

I don't think you're doing yourself any harm - it's just that chitted potatoes tend not to be as fresh as they could be, and the taste might be affected. It's the combination of green and chitted that might not do you much good because the green skin is mildly poisonous and certainly isn't going to taste nice.

You taking the pee out of my chitting posts, LGJ?

mawbroon · 28/09/2005 13:38

WWB - I know what chitting is as I grow my own potatoes in the garden. People seem to find this a great source of amusement for some reason. And that's even before I tell them about the rhubarb and the broccolli and the onions and the .....etc etc etc oh and the home made jam and soup and chutney.

My Dad was a potato inspector for a while, so I have heard more about potatoes over the years than I care to remember!!

flamebat · 28/09/2005 13:49

If I recall the site said that the green n chitty was only an issue if they were uncooked...

Now trying to remember why I was reading about eating raw potatoes...

WigWamBam · 28/09/2005 13:50

mawbroon, people always think it's funny until you serve them up some home-grown spuds or peas and they taste the difference ...

flamebat · 28/09/2005 13:52

I'd love to grow my own - too bloody lazy though and never get round to it.

teeavee · 28/09/2005 13:55

chitty chitty bang bang - love that word! you learn s'thing new every day!

Nemo1977 · 28/09/2005 13:57
