I am sorry I am very unsympathetic to vegetarianinsm - purely because of the hassle factor of catering for them.

Have veggie(but eats fish) friend coming - thought I would bbq.

what should I do?

Is it bad form to do her and her bf fish and us have lovely meat?

He used to eat meat but has compromised with her so she eats fish and he doesnt eat meats. CRACKERS

What about kebabs with fishy bits or prawns and things like mushrooms, peppers and shallots threaded on them. Or you could buy some veggie burgers. If they are strict about meat they may not want to eat something cooked on a meaty bbq (!)

You could just buy some trout and bbq them for all of you, plus do veggie kebabs and some nice big prawns. That is pretty delicious.

Northerner · 15/08/2003 15:38

Do fish for them and meat for you. Not bad form at all. I'm sure she'll be used to seeing others eat meat.

SamboM · 15/08/2003 15:40

You could always cut a big chicken breast into a goldfish shape and paint it gold with bbq sauce!!

SoupDragon · 15/08/2003 15:42

Salmon BBQs well.

Just had non fish eating veggies for BBQ last weekend and did vegetable kebabs (courgette, pepper, mushroom, butternut squash, whatever) with cubes of Haloumi cheese which BBQs well without melting. Simply thread on a skewer.

The veggies were perfectly happy with us eating meat - lets face it, they're used to it!!

SoupDragon · 15/08/2003 15:42

LOL @ SamboM!

codswallop · 15/08/2003 15:43

LOl sambo M I feel like secretly disguising meat as additive ridden quorn..Tee hee

As a vegetarian I find the whole 'but I eat fish' thing weird... but hey... biggest problem I'd have is if the food is being bbq on same bbq to meat. Friends of ours rather lovingly bought throw away type bbq trays esp. for us at a recent bbq.

Ideas: agree with previous suggestions but why not do veggie kebabks that everyone will eat or some lovely 'special' veggie sausages? Cauldron do a good range.

I'd also include a few bowls of salad re: couscous/ rice & beans/cowslaw/pasta perhaps.

HTH.

codswallop · 15/08/2003 15:47

Me too Winnie!! Most odd.

Codswallop, the compromise is not 'shite'... it is lovely. It proves that he is prepared to compromise. giving up something for someone else is a really nice thing to do. DH gave up all meat when we got together and has never looked back. (Infact he is now like a stereotypical reformed smoker on smoking with vegetarianism IYKWIM )

SamboM · 15/08/2003 15:48

Coddy, why don't you cook some nice trout but hide a pepperami in the tummy

codswallop · 15/08/2003 15:49

Phenarrgh!

WideWebWitch · 15/08/2003 15:51

Why is everyone so thrown by the idea of cooking for veggies? It's not that hard ffs. You can buy veggie sausages, burgers etc very easily. And if they eat fish, well that's really easy then. What about big mushrooms grilled with olive oil and garlic? The veggie kebabs sound good too.

bettys · 15/08/2003 15:55

Why did you invite them if it makes you so hassled?

SoupDragon · 15/08/2003 16:05

Coddy, there were 6 of us. 3 meat eaters, 2 veggies and an "eats fish". Veggie stuff done on separate side of BBQ to meat things you'll be please to know, Winnie! We all ate the veggie kebabs except for DH and FIL who avoid vegetables at all costs.

WWW, I had loads of trouble getting nice veggie stuff for the BBQ. Tescos was cr*p and the veggie qtr pounders I bought from there were horrible! I know as I ate them for tea last night. I don't remember having that much trouble before. Lots of veggie things don't seen to BBQ very well either.

codswallop · 15/08/2003 16:12

moot point bettys - its a "we're passing by" number...

Codswallop - I am one of those annoying 'Pescatarians' - you can buy nice salmon and monkfish kebabs from Tescos fish counter or there is always the old fav - salmon fillets or salmon steak. One fun idea (for all not just veggie fish eaters) is to take a whole rainbow trout (gutted) and wrap in lots of wet newspaper - in theory when the wet newspaper burns off the fish is cooked. I have seen it done but never really tried it myself....

codswallop · 15/08/2003 17:23

i hope so too sobernow...
just think i felt like a arant and that happened to come along.
sorry to all veggies.

Why do you eat fish but not meat? Friends of ours (v v nice friends) do this and I never feel quite comfortable asking them as it sounds a bit confrontational, but I would really love to know. Isn't fish every bit as 'cruel' as meat?
Would really love to know. can understand the moral principle/squeamishness of vegetarianism but not of people who eat fish but not meat.
