jenk1 · 14/09/2005 14:09

We spend too much roughly £80.
I say too much cos its 2 adults and 1 child and a baby and half of what goes in the fridge gets forgotten about and binned.
I blame it on the "buy one get one free" offers, why do i fall for them?
anyway im on a mission to see if i can knock a few quid off my weekly shop and put the rest towards something else

£50 if really need lots of stuff. Spent £25 last Sat and have only needed to buy milk since

CarlyP · 14/09/2005 14:12

2 adults and 1 toddler and 1 baby. i spend over £100/wk (nrly always £120/130) but that includes nappies

Nemo1977 · 14/09/2005 14:12

£50 for myself,dh, ds [nearly 2] and the dog. In last year we have knocked it down from £90 to the £50 mark

fairydust · 14/09/2005 14:12

£80 - £100 per week.

Nemo1977 · 14/09/2005 14:13

ours includes nappies for ds too. also started to buy bits towards the baby coming[teats bottle brush etc]

KBear · 14/09/2005 14:14

Too much and I'm trying to cut back too! About £80 a week - there are four of us and I don't buy loads of treats either. I think food is overpriced in many supermarkets and realised this when I went into Lidl for camping gear (!) and saw that their fresh real OJ is 69p and Morrisons is about £1.70.

jenk1 · 14/09/2005 14:19

nemo, how did u cut your bill down?

I went through a phase of cost cutting - Lidl and Netto were my favourite haunts along with the local baker, butcher and grocer. But it took up so much of my time that I have lapsed and started shopping online. Even so, if you plan a weekly menu and stick to it, by shopping online you buy only what you need rather than what takes your fancy.

Used to spend £120 a week, then got it down to £50 a week. Now online, about £80, and that includes beer and wine.

jenk1 · 14/09/2005 14:20

Kbear - my town has a lidl and a morrisons too! i blame morrisons for me spending too much money, all those special offers are too good to resist

We bought less of the rubbish like the buy one get one free that we never used...swapped some stuff for stores own but not everythign as dh is fussy. We dont buy alcohol anyway and for cleaning stuff etc i go to wilkinsons about once every 2 mths and buy stuff on offer..lol

gingerbear · 14/09/2005 14:22

I cook lots of casseroles, shepherds pies, chilli, curries etc from scratch in big batches and freeze stuff too.
If you look on moneysavingexpert.com there are forums specifically about how to cut shopping budgets. (We talk about it lots on mumsnet too!)

Nemo1977 · 14/09/2005 14:22

lidl and aldi are great for basics like meat, veg, fruit and milk. Also tend to spend less as there is less variety.

Nemo1977 · 14/09/2005 14:24

and t back up gingerbear menu planning is fab. Dont get me wrong we still have treats as we all love choccie n crisps but its limited and we actually eat better for the budgetting

piffle · 14/09/2005 14:26

I stock up at Lidls/Aldis for washing powder, nappies - cleaning products and cereals, fruit juices and biscuits etc, also if need a fruit veg top up go there too.
I get an organic fruit and veg and egg box delivered every week for £16.50 and this keeps us going easily, infact we have TONS of apples left over just now... I do pop into tescos for goats milk and the odd tin of coconut milk etc what the others don't stock, maybe fresh herbs or fish etc.
DD is on the goats milk which is £6.50 per week and ds has school dinners which is £7.50 per week. but all in all even with the odd drink and treat, it's easily under £75
I tend to cook from scratch too, we have a takeaway maybe once every 3-4 weeks and the fish and chips once a month.
2 adults (includes dp's lunch too) one man sized 11 yr old ds and one dainty dd aged 3.

jenk1 · 14/09/2005 14:26

One thing I hate to compromise on is meat. I try to buy organic / free range as much as I can. I stock up from local farmers market every month. We eat a lot less meat than we used to, but bulk up on pulses and rice/pasta etc.

gingerbear · 14/09/2005 14:34

What sort of food does your family prefer?
You could base several meals around mince say - spag bol, shepherds pie, chilli, mince and potato pie.

I buy a whole chicken for sunday lunch, then pick off the leftover meat for a curry. I have even been known to boil the bones with a carrot onion and celery to make chicken stock (good for risotto, soup and casserole making)

God, I sound like Delia!

munz · 14/09/2005 14:36

about £35/£40 max per week + £5 for dogs.

I do tesco.com once a month for £100 guide (£80 after discounts) £20 two sacks of dog food 15kg each - normally lasts 6 weeks, then butcher for £30-£35 and then about £30 floating about. in all about £150 ish per month

gossifer · 14/09/2005 14:41

i'm useless at menuplanning, but cook everything from scratch, but i always wonder whether people include alcohol in these budgets?????
i spend far too much!

munz · 14/09/2005 14:56

don't really buy alchol but when we do it's only about £20 max which lasts DH ages for a crete of 24 largers (or 2)

our bills for 2 adults, cook everything from scratch no menus as such but make sure we have at least 30 meals in the freezer. (more often about 35/40 thou)

jenk1 · 14/09/2005 15:48

someone mentioned lidl/aldi for washing powder.

I often walk past them and wonder are their cleaning stuff any good?

Does anyone know

2 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby. We spend 40 to 50 pounds per week including nappies.

QueenOfQuotes · 14/09/2005 15:50

Up to about 2 1/2months ago about £80-90 a week (2 adults 2 children), that included all the washing powder, nappies, bubble baths etc etc.

Now we spend about £40 - with about £5 for "top-up" during the week

jenk1 · 14/09/2005 15:53

pomi-thats what i want to spend where do u shop?

OP posts:
Pomi · 14/09/2005 15:54

Lidl washing powder is as good as any other but other cleaning stuff.
