flapjack that comes out of the tin

Kids love flapjack but mine(Delia's recipe) stays in the tin or disintegrates so I throw the tin at the table and let them do whatever they want.. no wonder they like stuffing their faces with it.
Anyway anybody got a foolproof recipe as ds is on the case? please

Line the tin with foil and drape it over the sides - when it's cooked, cut the squares gently, then leave to cool. Once cool, lift it out by the foil and peel it off. BTW if you don't use butter they won't set hard, I tried to be healthy and use Flora as I do with cakes but Flora is designed not to set IKSWIM!

I use Nigella's recipe btw.

SleepySuzy · 13/09/2005 21:17

I like the recipe on the back of Quaker Oats.

helsi · 13/09/2005 21:17

Buy ready made from Morrisons - in a foil tin and comes out easily!

KBear · 13/09/2005 21:19

helsi you slack housewife, make your own!

debutante · 13/09/2005 21:22

Have been using Stork for cooking so do you think that is it KBear?
Sleepysuzy have bought Tesco's oats.. no recipe!

Yep, I think so. I've tried various recipes as I love them and so do the kids but I've found that you must use butter if you want them to set. Also cooking time is a bit tricky - too long = rock hard, not long enough = collapse.

helsi · 13/09/2005 21:24

yes but I work full time - I am also getting cleaner, dh does ironing, I buy convenience foods sometimes, I am slack and I love it!!!! Should be ashamed to call my self a housewife!!

crunchie · 13/09/2005 21:25

That might be my problem, the non butter thing

motherinferior · 13/09/2005 21:27

Greaseproof paper does the trick for me.

KBear · 13/09/2005 21:29

helsi, just kidding! I'm feeling gobby tonight, sorry! I work and buy convenience food too, no crime in that, it's convenient!!!

How do you get a husband to do ironing - one of life's great mysteries to me.

debutante · 13/09/2005 21:35

I cook because i love to eat.. cakes mainly and am enjoying passing my love of licking out mixing bowls to my kids Don't really care about proper meals anywhere near as much as cakes, flapjack brownies.. you name it as long as it has sugar in. On working days I eat Quality Street or biscuits someone else has brought in for their birthday. A lovely tradition.Cooking means I don't have time to do housework.

Is your dh quick at ironing - my dh takes hours and hours if he ever bothers to iron a shirt.
I would love a cleaner but would have to tidy up before she could even clean. Are you v tidy person?

dh does ironing!!! WOW!! must get married!

KBear · 13/09/2005 22:10

not all of them do!

MrsSpoon · 13/09/2005 22:12

I get this problem with Flapjacks, I always use butter (not keen or marg, that could be a whole other thread ) but have terrible trouble getting them out of the tin. I tried lining it once with greaseproof paper and the flapjacks welded themselves to the paper.

KBear · 13/09/2005 22:14

tin foil, lightly greased is your answer. Trust Kbear the flapjack Queen!

MrsSpoon · 13/09/2005 22:45

Will that definately work KBear? I greased my greaseproof paper and they stuck to it.

vwvic · 13/09/2005 23:37

Silicon paper (bakingparchment) works for me every time.

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 23:39

No you don't have to use butter to make them set - I know because I've used stork for the last 3 (well my first 3 actually). All of which stayed in the container until we cut the individual pieces out to eat.

However this time I used Tesco Value Margarine - and it not only set hard, but I even managed to cut it out and put perfect 'squares' into a tin

Janh · 13/09/2005 23:55

Not foil or greaseproof, you want baking parchment, it's magic stuff - nothing sticks to it (can be slightly soggy on the bottom but I like soggy!)

suzywong · 13/09/2005 23:55

I'll tell you the secret

a teaspoon of cream or condensed milk

I am just eating a flapjack with crushed walnuts and poppyseeds and it is hard on the top and yet soft a nd yielding on the bottom and came out of the baking parchment lined tin with ease. And of course you must cut them in to portion sizes in the tin staight after they come out of the oven

SleepySuzy · 13/09/2005 23:56

That sounds yummy Suzy! Can you make me some - I'll pay yer!!

MrsSpoon · 14/09/2005 13:18

Will keep that in mind for next time SW, if still no luck will get some baking parchment.

KBear · 14/09/2005 13:21

I think success depends on cooking time too - it's trial and error really.
