Homemade oven chips... I'm being ridiculous, aren't I?

We buy oven chips as they are delicious pretty handy to chuck in with some fishfngers (sshhh) on occasion.

But it occurs to me that they can't be that difficult to make? Is it really just cut up some potatoes and chuck them in the oven with some oil...
timings?

Could I freeze them..?!

Thanks, wonderful mnetters!

Potato wedges are delicious and better for you if you leave the skins on. That's what I tell myself, anyway, as I tuck into a plateful!

GeekyGirl · 10/10/2010 20:12

I make my own. To avoid them getting too oily, shake them around in a plastic bag with a teaspoon of oil (and salt, pepper & herbs if you want) so they are lightly coated. Don't know about freezing though.

nancydrewrocked · 10/10/2010 20:16

I don't have oven chips bought or otherwise.

When I do make chips I shallow fry them - sooooo much nicer and really not worth getting het up about as an occassional treat Smile

I know this treally doesn't answer the Q but I am somewhat saddened by people eating dry, tasteless oven chips when they could have proper homemade fries instead!

Frrightattendant · 10/10/2010 20:16

I make the world's quickest oven chips Smile

Chop up a potato - skin included

drizzle a bit of oil onto a baking tray with sides

bung in the chopped up spuds

shake it around a bit or put a bit more oil on top,

put in on about 200 for about 15-20 minutes depending on how thick the bits are.

Easy and the kids love them.

Frrightattendant · 10/10/2010 20:16

I use olive oil btw.

zandy · 10/10/2010 20:25

Also works with the spray-can oil.

Adair · 10/10/2010 20:36

Ooh spray oil

Frrightattendant (love the name - already though?!!) - your method is what I was thinking. No parboiling though? And leaving the skins on, that's brilliant.

Nancydrew, gosh, had forgotten I used to make shallow fry chips for ddall the time occasionally. Delicious. But nice to chuck in oven and forget about for twenty mins.

Agh, want chips now! But we had a roast dinner two hours ago Blush May have to make for lunch tomorrow... Will do a compare with both methods, thanks!

"power boil" - lol. How does that differ from boil?

HeadFairy · 10/10/2010 20:39

I do them as the others say, parboiling for a few mins if I can be --bothered- have time, sometimes for a bit of variety I make them with sweet potato which goes down well even with my super picky ds.

weaselm4 · 10/10/2010 20:44

I'm another one for potato wedges. Soooo yum! And just involves hacking up a potato or three (I will admit to using frozen oven chips when I can't even be arsed to do THAT!)

Will have to try sweet potato ones HeadFairy.

mamas12 · 10/10/2010 20:48

I also cut up chuky chips with skin on and roll them in oil with garlic and herbs. Yummy

Same as other wedges, toss with a tbsp of olive oil, lay on flat tray skin side down, season and sprinkle with half a vegetable oxo cube. Hot oven, 20 mins. You're right about generic oven chips, convenient but can be v bland, although Homefries are far and away best of the bunch.

roundthehouses · 10/10/2010 21:08

if you chop them and par-boil them, drain and cool, you can then freeze and cook from frozen like package oven chips. easy peasy.

Adair · 10/10/2010 21:14

roundthehouses, really? That;s fab. So just chuck some oil on when it's time to cook?

We do chilli sweet potato wedges here... Think I have just had a mental block when it came to making oven chips Grin.

brimfull · 10/10/2010 21:19

we always do homemade

no parboiling or peeling here

just cut up pots
bung in tray
sprinkle with oil and bit of salt
mix around
200c
35-40min
done

NonnoMum · 10/10/2010 21:29

I made "proper" chips the other day. (Had run out of oven chips!)

Didn't like having a pan of boiling oil on the hob though. Does anyone have a decent chip pan? Or one of those fryers?

roundthehouses · 10/10/2010 21:32

exactly. toss in oil and cook. the sweet potato chips didn´t survive this process as successfully but ds hates them anyway Grin

Snorbs · 10/10/2010 21:37

Potato wedges here too. 40min with olive oil, paprika and a touch of salt.

Bugger, now I'm hungry Angry

ReneRusso · 10/10/2010 21:45

I use Olive oil and paprika. And they are really good with a mesh oven baking thingy (lakeland?) as they cook really evenly and crispy.

PrettyFeckinVacant · 10/10/2010 23:45

I use paprika too, Rene.

I used to buy frozen oven chip but realised that I was just throwing them away as the dc didn't even like them.

I now make chips or wedges, depending on the meal, put a bit of oil on them, some salt and paprika and bake them for 35-40 mins.

Much nicer Smile

Frrightattendant · 11/10/2010 10:26

Adair - don't blame me, it was Anyfucker - she changed her name so I had to BlushGrin

sweet pot ones are GORGEOUS btw. And I do so agree that oven chips from the shops are dull as ditchwater.

tb · 11/10/2010 10:41

Sweet potato ones are lovely drizzled with the spicy oil used on pizzas before cooking. I think a mixture of something like sunflower oil and a little chilli oil would work.

I mean the oil that the French use for drizzling over pizza that is full of herbs and dried chillies.
