Homemade oven chips... I'm being ridiculous, aren't I?

We buy oven chips as they are delicious pretty handy to chuck in with some fishfngers (sshhh) on occasion.

But it occurs to me that they can't be that difficult to make? Is it really just cut up some potatoes and chuck them in the oven with some oil...
timings?

Could I freeze them..?!

Thanks, wonderful mnetters!

Nonno

Years ago I used to have a deep fryer but TBH they take up a lot of space and get grimey very quickly - they also smell pretty bad.

I find if I shallow fry in a deep saucepan (IYKWIM?) so the oil covers the potatoes you don't actually use loads of oil and it cools qucikly so it can be disposed of very quickly.

As long as you are always watching the oil when it's on the hob you shouldn't ever have a problem.

Weeeelll...
Just finished off the batch of ones I made using frright's method (cut up potatoes with skins on - genius, put in hot oil, coat, gas 6/then 7 for abut 20-25mins).

Lovely!!

And so easy. Well impressed (and dd liked them too, she was allowed a couple. Am eating them while the dc play in the garden. They will be eating dinner soon, but I am eating later so it's important for me to eat something so I am not grumpy mummy Wink)

Thanks all for enlightening me. Agree the shallow fry method is delish but the joy of oven chips is you can chuck in and forget about them.

Hmm... easy, cheap chips... this is going to be bad for my health though, isn't it?

you can make nice wedges by boiling potatoes whole for 10 to 15 mins.....Then drain and cut int wedges shape. place on baking tray and drizle with Olive Oil, add seasoning and cook until crispy on the outside and soft in the middle.

I put the whole spuds in the microwave for about 5 minutes (depending on size & number, and prick them first) rather than boil them.

Chop them up, wedges or chips, toss in oil & seasoning in a plastic bag. Bung in v.hot oven for 15 minutes.

I have frozen them after the microwave/chop/toss bit, but tbh they are so quick to make from scratch.

If anyone is needing pictures to help with the process of making Home Made Chips / Wedges - have a look at Jamies Home Cooking Skills: Potato Wedges

ChippyMinton - Microwave instead of boiling, inspired Grin will have to try that. Love anything which helps speed things up a bit.
