It occurred to me that there isnt a great deal to it, but looking at the jars they put all kinds of crud into it.
Got any recipes for it?

its just a basic white sauce with some cheese in it - a cheese sauce in fact.

Springchicken · 05/09/2005 16:09

Other other way i know of making it is with a packet, milk and cheese.

Mum2girls · 05/09/2005 16:10

It's just flour, butter (equal measures) and then add milk and stir over a low heat till you get the required consistency - I add cheese to it too as our kids love cheese

GhostofNatt · 05/09/2005 16:10

Isn't it just white sauce: ie knob of butter, couple tbpsps flour, cook together, add milk keep stirring on low heat until thickens adding nmore milk as you go. Stir in a load of grated cheese if you want cheese sauce, salt pepper?

Enid · 05/09/2005 16:10

a packet

you do realise that you only need flour, butter, milk and cheese dont you?

so you are paying for a packet when you could be using a heaped tablespoon of butter/heaped tbsp of flour

tsk

kids today

The fab easy recipe I use is just a big tub of macarpone heated up gently - makes a yummy sauce.

GhostofNatt · 05/09/2005 16:10

Hmm, identi-posts

Classically it doesn't have cheese in it, but I like it cheesy too. I like the idea of marscapone though.

starshaker · 05/09/2005 16:12

yeah i know the sauce hes called fred ill tell u exactly how i make it.

  1. get in car and drive to tesco
  2. go in and find ragu on shelf
  3. purchase said sauce
  4. return home

alternitively order online with other shopping lol

but thats cos i cant be bothered with the hassel and dont really have the time anymore

flour, butter and milk. Piece of p*ss.

gingerbear · 05/09/2005 16:12

or even easier, mix cornflour and with a little water, boil milk then add cornflour paste, stirring all the time until it thickens. I like to add a mix of cheddar and parmesan (cream cheese is also nice)

I always make a basic cheese sauce. I find the jar ones can be too salty even for my taste.

GhostofNatt · 05/09/2005 16:13

actually think lasagne usually better without white sauce, controversial

Oooohh Hulababy, marscapone, sounds like a great idea, must try it.

Springchicken · 05/09/2005 16:14

How can you have Lasagne without white sauce? {confused}

GhostofNatt · 05/09/2005 16:14

Delia actually makes it sound harder than it is

Mud · 05/09/2005 16:15

cheese sauce or bechamel sauce

GhostofNatt · 05/09/2005 16:15

Well vegetable lasagne with just vegetables in tomato sauce and lots of cheese on top eg - just find all that white sauce too stodgy...

gingerbear · 05/09/2005 16:17

Delia's way....You can always sieve the lumps out afterwards

Hulababy · 05/09/2005 16:18

mum2girls. It's so easy - a doodle. I just never thought to cheat that way before. Really is just gently heating up for a few minutes. Goes really smooth and a thick runny sauce. Use in a lasagne (we do aubergine) with parmesan and the two together go fab!

moonshine · 05/09/2005 16:22

Agree with GhostofNatt. My mum never used a white sauce in lasagne - and she's Italian!
