I've never made a shepherds pie Is it bascially just bolognaise with mash on the top in the oven for half an hour?

er, nope, it's basically mince onion (carrot and peas if u so wish) put in a pot with gravey and left to cook for an hour of two (unless u fry the mince) drain any fat off the top and grevy (I always put to much in) then mash to the top and back in the grill to brown it, add cheese to the top if u so wish, takes about 2 hours when I do mine. don't forget pepper and salt.

charliecat · 03/09/2005 11:32

your making me very very hungry

compo · 03/09/2005 11:33

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, yummy! Think I'll make a shepherds pie today. I normally make mine in advance:

cook up mince and onion and carrots (baked beans too if I have any) on hob in pan with gravy

put it in big dish.

cook tatties and mash

put mash on top of mince.

leave to cool.

Then when you want it, stick it all in oven and reheat for about half hour to hour depending on size.

Its the sort of thing everyone makes differently, but always turns out scrummy!!!

Hi Compo,when I do a sheperds pie, I fry onion,brown mince,pinch mixed herbs,splash worcestshire sauce,tin of tomatoes,seasoning and I add diced carrot.
Then I top with cheesy mashed potato and add a few knobs of butter to get the top brown.

I put it in the oven to start with on about 200
for 20 mins then finish it off under the grill to crisp up.

Fab served with baked beans,my kids love it.

baggybear · 03/09/2005 11:36

oh, better tell you i fry mince off first and then let it cook in gravy for about 20 mins

compo · 03/09/2005 11:38

thanks - that sounds quite easy, even for me

only two hours cos I don't fry my mince off first otehrwise yes bout half hour to 3/4 ish. v tasty!

Hulababy · 03/09/2005 11:40

I never do mine for that long

I just fry off mince and onion, with some herbs, maybe a bit of veggies sometimes too, and a dask of hendersons relish (a bit like worcestershire sauce). Do it till mince is brown right through and the rest if softened - maybe 10-15 minutes maximum. I then add some gravy and simmer for another 5 minutes or so.

Meanwhile I do the potatoes and mash them.

I then put the mince mix into a bowl, top with mask and maybe a bit of cheese.

If eating straight away, I just pop under grill for 5 minutes to crisp up the potatoes.

If eating later (or if have frozen it previously and it's now defrosted) - I do it in the oven for 20 minutes at about 200.

Hulababy · 03/09/2005 11:41

Ah, that makes sense then munz.

compo · 03/09/2005 11:42

ooh, sounds yummy

Jackstini · 03/09/2005 11:43

Top with mask? lol at that image Hula!

Hulababy · 03/09/2005 11:43

LOL! My typing is so bad today - I actually edited that post and still got it wrong

Nemo1977 · 03/09/2005 12:01

lol funnily enough just done this for our tea tonight and munz is right...frying and simmering mince in itself takes 1hr or so. Then you add potato and put it in oven on a low heat [gas mark 2] for about hr to give it a lovely taste..

Nemo1977 · 03/09/2005 12:11

just looking at other ways and everyoine does it differently...
I do
fry mince and onion[otherveg aswell]
add flour and 1/3 pint of water
add salt and a beef stock cube
boil up
add some gravy browing[only for look no taste to it] and some worcestshire sauce.
Simmer on hob for about 3/4 hr
then put into tray ready for potato to be added then in oven on low gas mark for about 3/4hr to hr

This is how my father in law taught me to do it and he is an ex chef. Tastes yummy

munz · 03/09/2005 12:14

tbh I don't like frying the mince off first I perfer to cook mine raw on a GM 3/4 and let it slowly cook then do the mash that's how mum taught me althou i've been known to fry to quickness - doens't taste as nice to me thou.

waterfalls · 03/09/2005 12:57

I boil the mince first,

And I melt red leicester cheese on top of the mash.......yum

waterfalls · 03/09/2005 12:58

Well I know what we are having for tea tonight now.

stacijc · 03/09/2005 13:02

apparently its nicer if you do the mince early on and leave to 'set' in the fridge and do the potatoes later on. it stops the potato sinking into the meat

or so says Gary Rhodes lol!

piffle · 03/09/2005 13:37

I usually add a tin of tomatoes or tomato paste (Gary RHodes advice) and it made a much nicer pie in the end

edodgy · 03/09/2005 13:43

Shepherds pie is supposed to be made with lamb mince and cottage pie is beef mince.

littlerach · 03/09/2005 13:47

We always add tinned tomatoes, and sometimes beans.

When we do the veggie style, then we add chickpeas.

emmasmummy · 03/09/2005 14:34

i know its wrong, but red peppers in a pie like this is lovely.

RachD · 03/09/2005 14:46

So many different ways of doing it !
I do it this way:
Using big wok or pan on hob:

Fry minve, onions.
Then add peas & smallish bits of carott.
Tin of toms.
Worcester sauce, tiny squirt of tom puree.
Add gravy granules.

So easy.
Mash on top.
Bit of cheese.

As stacijc, says, if you do it and let it sit for a while.
Before, pooping into oven to rehat.
Then the meat becomes even more tasty.

Not any more hassle than making spag bol, really.

Sometimes I use beef mice - is that cottage pie ?
Sometimes I use lamb mice - is that sheppards pie ?
