dh took dds blackberry picking yesterday. so we are arguing over whether to make a pie or a crumble. Maybe it's just me but I just don't get pie. Who on earth would have pie when you can lovely crumbley, caramelly, nutty crumble? and do you have it with creme fraiche, custard or ice cream? or do you just have three servings so you can have one of each? mmmm my mouth is watering

Queen of Quotes.....

ridiculously easy tinned fruit crumble recipe found on the internet

the really really difficult homemade version, honest

If you want to get "flashy with your crumble", try different sugars and cinnamon combinations. I love using dark brown sugar varieties, but in the likely event of not having any in, good old granulated is great! Porridge oats are a great addition btw.

Crumble always... with thick old fashioned custard, or vanilla ice cream. yum yum.

Jam I am feeling sooooo smug atm. I have made 6 pots of Blackberry Jam, 5 pots of plum and apple jam, and I am planning a big jam cook off this weekend with some new varieties Spicy apple chutney (easy peasy), apple and chilli jelly, honey and apple jelly and maybe some apple jam. Do you see a theme here? We have an apple tree that is just overloaded this year. I can't give away enough

BTW Jam is really easy to make. Get 1kg of blackberries, 1kg of Jam sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice. Chuck in a pan, bring to the boil and boil hard (huge high sided pan needed) for about 10 - 15 mins. Before cooking jam, wash in HOT water jam jars and lids, put on a baking sheet in oven at approx mk5 for 10 mins. Turn off oven and leave jars in until ready to pot. To test jam, put a tsp on a saucer (freeze the saucer first) and if it sets a bit and goes 'jam like' it is ready. It took me about 1/2 hr to make a load of blackberry jam, bit longer for apple/plum as it needs coring etc.

definitely crumble, with double cream, unless I am offered cherry pie - yum!

I'm quite chuffed. Who'd have thought the small matter of pie of crumble would be worth 56 messages

Crunchie, please, what is the difference between jam and jelly. Do you strain your black berry jam to get rid of all those black berry seeds?

crunchie · 08/09/2005 21:21

Jelly is much more of a pain in the . You cook the fuit until soft, then strain it through a 'jelly bag' or muslin for a few hours (or overnight). Then recook with sugar before putting in jars.

I like blackberry jam with whole pieces =of fruit, but ithers don't
