dh took dds blackberry picking yesterday. so we are arguing over whether to make a pie or a crumble. Maybe it's just me but I just don't get pie. Who on earth would have pie when you can lovely crumbley, caramelly, nutty crumble? and do you have it with creme fraiche, custard or ice cream? or do you just have three servings so you can have one of each? mmmm my mouth is watering

How do you make crumble please?

Ameriscot2005 · 03/09/2005 12:12

The most basic is to whizz up butter, flour and sugar in the food processor until it's the consistency of bread crumbs.

we went blackberry picking and i made jam this morning! decided to do it after i saw a tub of blackberries in supermarket for £1.50 - there were only about 20 in it!

Amai - 2oz marg, 2oz sugar, 4oz sr flour. rub marg into flour and sugar. thats it (unless you want to add stuff like people have suggested).

hatstand · 03/09/2005 13:00

JAM?? We are clearly in the presence of a true domestic goddess. We are not worthy. (even if we can rustle up a crumble)

Cod - I used to be MUCH worse - no rice, no pasta, no custard, no eggs, nothing eggy-tasting or soggy textured (so no rice puddign ) no bread unless toasted, no meat with any visible fat or tubes , no butter, no vegetables except potatoes and mushrooms.... Horror child!
But I was v thin.

Crumble.
Or often we just have stewed fruit neat without crumble or pastry. (But with custard, cream or icecream)

QueenOfQuotes · 03/09/2005 14:00

crumble - and custard

spidermama · 03/09/2005 14:10

Crumble.
Easier. Nicer. Better.

NB:The above is solely based on my inability to make nice pastry and is not, in any way, meant to cast aspersions on those who prefer the pastry route. To each her own in the pudding world.)

honeycombe · 03/09/2005 14:36

Definately CRUMBLE and as there is less stodgey stuff compared to pie and more fruit you could argue it is less fattening aswell!

colditz · 03/09/2005 15:04

PIE! Goodness, what is wrong with all of you?

Crumble is disgusting!

QueenOfQuotes · 03/09/2005 15:05

you've obviously been eating the wrong sort of crumble then

serah · 03/09/2005 15:51

Hatstand....

Whats your crumble recipe then, with no tedious and sticky rubbing in?? I want to know!!

Amai · 03/09/2005 17:25

I was thinking of making black berry liquer with the jam DH made as it didn't set! Just going to add vodka and put in a pretty bottle and wait a few weeks. He made loads I wonder if it could be made into a crumble with some apples, seems like less hassle than a pie after all.

hatstand · 04/09/2005 16:54

melt the butter in the microwave then just stir the flour and sugar in - in big clumps and use a fork. it ends up the same bread crumb consistency but you don;t have to do it with your fingers

my mum was deeply suspicious when I shared this tip with her. am sure she still thinks its heresy. but it works

acnebride · 04/09/2005 17:06

hatstand, fantastic! How long in the microwave?

When hot, crumble. When cold, pie. Did a rhubarb, blackberry and apple crumble last night. We were schtuffed.

hatstand · 04/09/2005 17:44

just as long as it takes to melt the butter

But then you don't get the fun of eating the stuck on bits off of your hands! Or am I the only grown up who likes doing that? And how about licking the cake mixture out of the bowl?

forgot a crucial bit of recipe - make too much and reward your hard work with a couple of spoonfuls of raw crumble mixture

starlover · 04/09/2005 21:15

QueenOfQuotes · 04/09/2005 21:17

OK please give me the idiots (easy) guide to Apple Crumble - please

mawbroon · 04/09/2005 21:52

I'll get splinters from sitting on the fence here, but I reckon that they are equally delicious.

How come your brambles are ready so early?? Ours here won't be ready until the middle to end of October If my baby hasn't popped by then (due on 27th Oct) then I will be out picking brambles to make jam.

Yum

Thanks guys, with your help I made a lovely dessert in only half an hour for our 6 dinner guests and had it with custard. Crumble rules!! ps make loads of crumble so it doesn't get submerged.
