French toast sweet or savoury?

I've been reading Rachel Allen's book 'home cooking' and was surprised to see that she suggests 'dredging' french toast in icing sugar.
Of all the disgusting ideasShock.
My dh agrees with me that french toast or more properly 'eggy toast' is a yummy savoury snack that can be served with ketchup or marmite or sausages and bacon, but most definitely not icing sugar.

Both. If you mean eggy bread, I like it with bacon and maple syrup. Yum.

For me, French toast = sweet, eggy bread = savoury, though have been converted to terrible American ways i.e. maple syrup, bacon, eggs all on the French toast!

BackOnceAgain · 23/08/2010 19:05

Savoury always, as the thought of sugar and eggs makes me feel ill....then I remembered cake so I'm now Confused

tummytickler · 23/08/2010 19:19

Sweet! My mum always made ours with icing sugar, and that is how i make it for the dc's - yum!

littleomar · 23/08/2010 19:20

honeymmmmmmmmmmmmm

FallingWithStyle · 23/08/2010 19:23

Savoury! With Ketchup.

I always thought Eggy Bread was a terrible affectation, something you'd say to a child.

FallingWithStyle · 23/08/2010 19:24

...though I now have the urge to try it with bacon and maple syrup.

seeker · 23/08/2010 19:25

Icing sugar - but bacon and maple syrup as well.

Or grilled peach slices. Or grilled strawberries.

And it's French Toas, not Eggy Bread.

LOVE Rachel Allen, by the way - wonderful book!

Bumperlicious · 23/08/2010 20:27

Urgh with marmite? Weirdo Grin

Tis yummy with ketchup, sausages, bacon, but also yummy with cinnamon and caramelised banana.

tummytickler · 23/08/2010 20:28

My mum used to call it Gypsy Bread - was never sure why, I don't think she knew either.

IMoveTheStars · 23/08/2010 20:33

why is it french toast and not eggy bread?

Terrible affectation? Hmm

colditz · 23/08/2010 20:34

It is to be served with baked beans (which I suppose are a bit sweet) or bacon.

colditz · 23/08/2010 20:36

French toast is appallingly non-u - like serviette.

It's eggy bread. It's bread that has been made eggy. There is nothing french about it.

Properly brought up british people do not use frenchifications when we have perfectly well serving English ones to use.

Umami · 23/08/2010 20:36

Eggy bread. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Now calling it pain perdu, that would be a terrible affectation Grin

Umami · 23/08/2010 20:37

In other words, what colditz said!

Hulababy · 23/08/2010 20:42

Eggy bread = bread dipped in eggs and fried.

I really don't like the stuff done with icing sugar and/pr cinnamon as served in the US.

BelligerentGhoul · 23/08/2010 20:42

If you add some orange juice to the eggy mix and then chuck icing sugar and cinammon over it when done, it is lovely.

I am also partial to it with HP sauce and fried mushrooms though.

UptoapointLordCopper · 23/08/2010 21:02

I've had eggy bread/french toast with cumin and coriander and chilli. Yum!

twolittlemonkeys · 23/08/2010 21:05

I call it eggy bread if it's savoury, or French bread when sweet (I add a bit of cinnamon and sugar to mix before dipping it then serve it with maple syrup). Both are delicious, and now I want some...

Savoury with grilled tomatoes. Mmmmm. But pancakes with maple syrup.

MiniMilk0610 · 23/08/2010 21:42

We usually have it with cinnamon, banana & maple/golden syrup or banana, bacon & maple/golden syrup, depending on whether we're having it for breakfast or lunch or just what we feel like...yum :)

eeky · 23/08/2010 21:51

I pefer savoury with HP sauce and pint mug of strong builder's tea - yum. If have hangover (rare in these post-dd and ds days...), sandwich crispy fried proper bacon and tomatoes in the middle.

Have come late to sweet version, but with a little cinnamon and icing sugar, is delish served with fresh berries and banana (and maybe maple syrup). This must be made with proper crusty bread or brioche, though whereas savoury will be ok with plastic sliced from the freezer. Good way of getting fruit into reluctant toddler and husband.

I must try the combination of both with bacon and maple syrup.

Oh, and however you cook it it's definitely eggy bread!

pointydog · 23/08/2010 22:00

I only ever have it savoury but I think it would be lovely drenched in icing sugar. It's like pancakes, innit. Can be sweet or savoury, just add sugar.
