French toast sweet or savoury?

I've been reading Rachel Allen's book 'home cooking' and was surprised to see that she suggests 'dredging' french toast in icing sugar.
Of all the disgusting ideasShock.
My dh agrees with me that french toast or more properly 'eggy toast' is a yummy savoury snack that can be served with ketchup or marmite or sausages and bacon, but most definitely not icing sugar.

As a child I only ever had it with sugar - never ever thought of it as a savoury food.
My kids have it with tomato sauce - so kind of savoury/sweet but I really think it should be sweet.

Fried bread was savoury food when I was young - seemingly out of fashion now though.

Deffo eggy bread not french toast, eaten with salt, black pepper & ketchup.

Oddly had a conversation with a friend, who is French, about this last week. She said that in France it was called "pain perdu".

My opinion on calling it eggy bread is coloured by my mums best friend who used to have baby names for food.
So sausage and mash would be snog'n'tatsHmm and sunday roast was chicken/beef/lamb num-num Hmm
French toast was eggy bread, wasn't til I was older I realised other people called it that too. But by then the damage was done.

Anyone else have a kind of french toast cheese sandwich? You just make a cheese sandwich, dip it in egg and fry - so basically french toast with melted cheese in the middle...sooooo yummy. I'm not even going into what we called that.

Sweet Eggy Bread Shock
Eggy Bread is savoury and always will be. If you're being posh and calling it French Toast then it's quite simply not Eggy Bread so you can put whatever you like on it.
Personally if we want sweet we make a pancake or a crepe if you prefer. :)

Would making Eggy bread at 1.30am be really bad? Shouldn't have read this thread, now I'm hungry.

We had it sweet and savoury when I was small. With just butter or with butter, cinnamon and icing sugar (healthy eaters as you can tell!)

DCs weren't that keen last time I tried it on them, odd children.

I thought French toast was that thin, crunchy stuff you make by slicing toast horizontally & toasting the cut sides?

I've never thought of making sweet egg bread! This thread's given me some wonderfully fattening, low-budget ideas Grin

When I were a lass & we wuz poor, a kids' treat was buttered bread with sugar, baked in the oven. I still do it sometimes, with cinnamon.

From a french perspective: french toast (pain perdu) is NOT eggy bread and it is a sweet dessert (yummy!).

I had eggy bread when I was growing up (my family had an upper middle class background, so I guess that was u, if you like). But it wasn't French Toast. Eggy bread is bread fingers dipped in egg and fried. French toast is sweet bread (Challah or Brioche) soaked in a mixture of egg, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and sugar, and fried. It's American with a French origin, and lovely with other American breakfast things (bacon, eggs, sausages, strawberries, chocolate, cream etc etc). It's definitely sweet though.

We always called it french toast when we were growing up and always ate it with sugar. But it wasn't fingers of bread dipped in anything, it was thick slices of bread soaked in beaten egg and milk and fried until it was crisp on the outside but soggy in the middle.

WHen we got a little older (preteen) my brother liked his with tomato ketchup with sugar on top! I like mine with brown sauce Blush. My kids like sugar or not at all.

Eggy bread is savoury ideally with brown sauce and bacon. French toast is sweet.

There is a fantastic recipe for one with sugar and cinammon in the egg mix and then make a nutella sandwich with the bread, dip in the eggy mixture, fry and serve with chopped pistachios and sliced banana.

Savoury - can't even imagine eating it sweet as I don't like sweet bread (summer pudding makes me heave). Always served with a side dressing of HP sauce.

I always had them sweet (a bit of sugar and cinamon). Dh prefers them savoury so I tried. Both are really nice.

I vote that French toast/pain perdu = sweet, made with posh bread like brioche or those wide tin loaves... I think pain perdu translates as 'lost bread', the idea being that stale bread that would be no good for eating fresh would be dunked in egg and fried.

And that the term eggy bread generally means savoury. I like it with bacon and ketchup. Not posh. Grin
