BOAK! WHY? That has to be the mingingest excuse for food I've ever seen. DH lurves his 'pizza suppers'. Drenched in brown sauce. Yuk.

Ladymuck · 29/08/2005 11:19

Is there anything that the scots don't deep fry?

swiperfox · 29/08/2005 11:19

nope

Prettybird · 29/08/2005 11:21

Nope.

But the "special" fish suppers - haddock cooked in breadcrumbs as you wait are yummy!

charliecat · 29/08/2005 11:23

Oh its fantastic.

i had it in london once was very drunk at the time and wouldnt leave the chippy till he made it lol

Pinotmum · 29/08/2005 11:48

Fish suppers in Glasgow are just too oily. Dh always has a battered black pudding and I think it would be better if he just drank lard.

Prettybird · 29/08/2005 11:54

But Pinotmum - that's why you should order a special fish supper! Then it's cooked fresh and in breadcrums rather than batter, so it is not as oily (at least it isn't at either of the two chippies that I go to).

Have to admit though - can't quite see the attraction of the battered black puddings or pizzas!

paolosgirl · 29/08/2005 12:44

I always think a chippy is like a hairdresser. Once you find a good one you just don't go anywhere else. A good chippy is a very important thing in a girls life

Prettybird · 29/08/2005 12:49

Have to say, the worst one in the vicinity of where I live is the Harry Ramsden's! The Englisgh don't know ow to make fish and chips to the Scots taste!

We probably only have fish and chips once a month, if that. But it is a nice treat wehn we have it. (Salt and lots of vinegar please!)

Have to remember to order the extra roll for dh for his chip butty - never understood the attraction myslef!

And especially the "no preparation" and "no washing up".

expatinscotland · 29/08/2005 12:51

The worst is when you find a decent chippy, and then they go and change owners or management! You place your order, expecting it to be as good as it usually is, and instead get old, rubbery fish .

It's heartbreaking.

jenk1 · 29/08/2005 12:53

is it the scots who deep fry mars bars?

expatinscotland · 29/08/2005 12:54

Mmmmm. Nothing like a deep fried Mars bar w/dairy ice creme . . .

Prettybird · 29/08/2005 13:02

Yup.

Never had it myself!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 29/08/2005 13:03

happymerryberries · 29/08/2005 16:51

When we lived in St Andrews our local chippie would do deep fried cadburies easter eggs in the run up to easter!

sweetkitty · 29/08/2005 17:40

Oh I love the chippies now we are back in Scotland, junk food in England just doesn't taste the same and the portion sizes are minute compared to up here.

Chippie chips with cheese and lashings of vinegar and salt mmmmmm (wonders why we are all putting on weight)!!!

CountessDracula · 29/08/2005 17:42

omg

how repulsive

serah · 29/08/2005 17:45

charliecat · 29/08/2005 17:54

I remember one night out in Glasgow when dh took me to a chip shop. It didn't do fish just chips ... with all sorts of extras e.g cheese, curry sauce. One option was Ashit pie or perhaps I was drunk Dh says it's like a steak pie?
