Fried...pizza...please tell me this isn't true?!

Dear Lord...

happymerryberries · 29/08/2005 19:11

Honestly our chippy used to do it!

We never had it, stuck to fish or pie and chips!

They also used to do freis white/black pudding and chips and fried haggis and chips

I cannot imagine how deep-frying pizza adds anything but grease to it!

I can nearly understand deep-frying a Mars bar though

expatinscotland · 29/08/2005 19:44

Oh, fried Mars bars are real. Mmmm. We eat a lot of fruit and veg, but we do fancy a chippy once a month or so. I usually have a fish supper, however.

paolosgirl · 29/08/2005 19:57

Can I also add that as a Scot, I have never eaten anything other than fish or chips from a chippy. Oh - apart from one very drunken night when I had a smoked sausage supper. It did not mix v. well with the half pint of vodka I'd just drunk [barf emoticon]

A good chippy doesn't have their stuff swimming in grease - it has good, crunchy batter. Here we have salt and sauce, which is brown sauce mixed with vinegar, as well as the usual vinegar. MMMMMM....!

happymerryberries · 29/08/2005 20:00

I had forgotten salt and sauce!

And it is a fish supper, not fish and chips!

charliecat · 29/08/2005 20:02

Well being in the south of England im settling for chips and cheese tonight...when I win the lottery im going to get a pizza supper couriered down here from the Thistle in Falkirk

Nah, the Anstruther Chippy is the BEST!

expatinscotland · 29/08/2005 20:07

Some chippies do brilliant pizzas as well.

happymerryberries · 29/08/2005 20:07

Ohh God!!!!!!!!!! It is just sooooooooooooooooooo good. Shame on you for reminding me , now that I live in the deep south!

Mingin', AM! Don't tell me you get brown sauce on it - hopefully not as you're in the West. That makes it even worse. SO nasty to see DH scoffing that.

hunkermunker · 29/08/2005 20:37

Remember having a burger in Scotland when I was about 11 - and they buttered the bun. Was very surprised. Now...I'm not though!

littlelamb · 29/08/2005 20:41

PMSL Pinotmum! Ashit pie!

paolosgirl · 29/08/2005 20:49

Leave off my brown sauce! It's a central belt thing, I think. Never had it until I moved to Edinburgh.

Bag of chips, salt n sauce, and 2 pickled onions (a ningin an a' anyone??!). I'm drooling

TwoIfBySea · 29/08/2005 20:52

I've heard of the ashit pie but think it was more to do with the dish the pie is cooked in rather than an ash pie. There is an old French word, don't know how to spell it but probably ashette or achette that means a little pie dish. No I'm not making this up!

I don't go to St Andrews for the chippies, I go for the ice cream! Burntisland has a really good chippy on the main street but our local one is Italian owned and the fish is lovely. About the only good thing in this town!

paolosgirl · 29/08/2005 20:54

No, you're right about the pie dish. Probably the name also derives from the content of the pie as well though...bleurgh..!

expatinscotland · 29/08/2005 20:54

Two,
Why go to St. A's for ice cream when you can go to Luca's in Musselburgh?

happymerryberries · 29/08/2005 20:55

If we are talking about food in St Andrews can I just say the words Fisher and Donalson and Fudge doughnuts?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

charliecat · 29/08/2005 20:55

Just had my chips and cheese with vinegared broon sauce...never thought this thread would get so big!!

Can't say I've eaten much in St. A's. It's not as 'Scottish' as the surrounding towns . DH 'didnae ken where to eat in this place,' but he knew just about every pub, chippy, restaurant and inn in the outlying area.
