Looking for inspiration here, if anybody has any spare.

What do you eat with the following -

macaroni cheese

goulash

sausage casserole

pasta pesto

lasagne

to make them into complete, delicious and nutritional meals? :)

sausage casserole = Usually mashed potatoes and veg cooked in the casserole.

lasagne = lots of nice green salad and some crusty bread.

Flossbert · 19/08/2010 17:24

Goulash we have with rice. That and lasagne I try to make sure there's ebough veg in to balance it (peppers and tomatoes, mostly)

Pesto pasta - I'll quite often chuck in a chicken breast and some cherry tomatoes.

Don't know about macaroni or sausage casseroles - not part of my repertoire! Smile

MrsBadger · 19/08/2010 17:26

macaroni with a green veg

goulash with rice and a green veg

sausage casserole with frozen peas, and also mash if there are no spuds in it

pasta pesto as it is - extra cheese on top and fruit for pudding

lasagne with salad

silverfrog · 19/08/2010 17:29

goulash with rice.

lasagne, pasta pesto - usually put enough veg into them (and maybe either chicken or tuna for the pesto) to make a complete meal - onion, courgette, pepper, carrots, even broccoli (hmm, my spell check says that is how to spell broccoli - doesn't look right to me!)on occasion - whatever is in the fridge, really.

sausage casserole - surely a one pot meal? put potatoes and veg in it. maybe some bread on the side.

macaroni cheese - also a complete meal. add tuna, if protein desired. cuold also add eg cauliflower to make beefed up cauliflower cheese.

FickleFairy · 19/08/2010 17:30

macaroni cheese with salad and maybe garlic pizza bread.

goulash we also have with rice

sausage casserole we have with mash and a green veg

pasta pesto I add chicken

lasagne with salad and sometimes either garlic bread or potato wedges, but I always put extra veg in the lasagne too.

mousymouse · 19/08/2010 17:35

macaroni cheese - put in frozen veg, my dc like peas

goulash - I put in a large amount of red peppers about half an hour before it is finished cooking. serve with poatoe or pasta

sausage casserole - lentils or beans

pasta pesto- does not really need anything, maybe plenty of grana padana

lasagne - layer with plenty of veg and maybe chicken/fish

BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 17:37

oulash with rice - great. See, I would never have thought of that and we always have it with baked potatoes. Do you do anything special to the rice? We're veggie, so there's always plenty of vege in my goulash but I'm never averse to more vege on the side!

Macaroni cheese - we always have this with a salad with a mustard dressing but looking for other ideas.

Pasta pesto - never know how to vege this up. Fruit for pudding is a good idea.

Lasagne - we always have salad and garlic bread.

Not sure about mash with sausage casserole tbh - doesn't it go a bit slimey tasting? Again, we normally have baked potatoes with it.

just plain basmati
if the goiulash is tasy enough it shouldn't need anything doing to it

my saus casserole doesn't make mash slimy - you have to make quite dry mash (not too much milk) so it soaks up the gravy.

go easy on garlic breafd with the lasagne - easy to forget there's pasta in it and overload on carbs.

TheUnmentioned · 19/08/2010 17:42

macaroni cheese - garlic bread

goulash- dont eat

sausage casserole - dont eat

pasta pesto- prob just cheeser tbh

lasagne - lots of salad and nice bread

BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 17:43

Yes - am concerned about the double carbs thing but dp seems to believe that pasta must be eaten with garlic bread!

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 17:45

Did wonder about doing buttered savoy and rye bread with goulash for a change too - what do you think?

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 19/08/2010 17:47

honestly?
grim, sorry

we buy 'garlic slices' so only one each rather than whole butter-dripping baguette

BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 17:51

Grim, why? Googling seems ot suggest eating goulash with noodles, which I can't get my head round tbh!

I often make garlic bread with mini naans or pittas, as I'm not fond of the ready made stuff.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 19/08/2010 17:53

because personally I like soft white bread to mop up casseroley gravy, not bricks dark rye Grin

Igglybuff · 19/08/2010 17:55

macaroni cheese - add some broccoli in or cauliflower to make it more of a pasta bake

goulash - rice/thick crusty bread

sausage casserole - potatoes in the casserole or mash/rice on the side

pasta pesto - cook some veg in with the pasta and mix together (e.g broccoli/sliced green beans or grill some red peppers, chop and stir in) plus some pancetta

lasagne - green veg (or include it in the mince) or salad

BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 17:55

Aha - but our local organic deli does the most delicious light rye bread you can imagine. :) And I hate dipping my bread in sauces, so it would be on the side!

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 17:55

Liking the idea of grilled peppers with pasta pesto.

OP posts:
silverfrog · 19/08/2010 17:56

to veg up pasta pesto:

chop onion, dice courgette, pepper, whatever other veg you want.

fry these up while pasta is cooking.

then drain pasta, chuck into the veg mix, add soem creme fraiche and stir through. then add pesto and stir through.

cheese on top, job done Smile

BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 17:57

Sounds great, Silver Frog.

KickArseQueen · 19/08/2010 18:05

My dcs like broccoli and cauliflower with Lasagne Blush its probably not the done thing but they like dipping it in the sauce and I'm not about to argue Grin

KickArseQueen · 19/08/2010 18:06

Oh and I don't do macaroni cheese any more - I do cauliflower cheese with macaroni in it Wink

Ballpoint · 19/08/2010 18:07

macaroni cheese- Usually have this as a side dish but you can make it into a main all by it's self by chucking in some bacon bits and some veg like broccoli or a grated courgette and serve with a salad or maybe some peas and sweetcorn for the kids.

goulash-rice or cous cous with a salad, could serve as a side with fish or meat too.

sausage casserole- mash potatoes or mash root veg of some kind like carrot and swede or parsnip and some green veg or another.

pasta pesto- would prob chuck in some veg with the pasta like peas, sweetcorn or broccoli and have some roast chicken pieces or a kiev if meat were required. Nice as a side to a piece of baked fish.

lasagne- salad.

BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 18:10

Thanks Ballpoint. We're veggie though, so no meat or fish. You have just reminded me how much I adore mashed swede though and the weather out there looks like it will v soon be time for mashed swede!
