Any ideas please My Mother has asked me to cook an 80's themed dinner party for her and her friends, I have done 60's and 70's for them before but I am struggling here,
Angel delight, pot noodles and canned mushroom soup are not doing anything for me, I also need to have a cocktail and wine list. This is a big deal for them as they dress up and make a night of it please help.

ahmmm ...

whole trout and almonds

ahm ]

gawd I'll give me head a shake and come back...

Buzzybb · 02/08/2010 13:41

Thanks Smile, it is hard the other era's were fairly simple compared to this and I am dreading what they might wear [am having visions of those Lycra exercise/gym gear], so strong alcohol will be needed, and I like Pina Colada

Just get a shed-load of ready meals and a micro-wave

Smilehighclub · 02/08/2010 13:44

oh yes you'll need to be kitted out in Pineapple Studio gear

sushi?

cheesecake

Mexican dishes + lime slice in beer bottle

tapas

cocaine to start?

tequila injected melon

zippy539 · 02/08/2010 13:46

how about nouvelle cuisine - was that 80s? Tiny little portions in the middle of acres of plate?

Smilehighclub · 02/08/2010 13:48

me and my mate used to drink Malibu and fresh milk [boak]

Smilehighclub · 02/08/2010 13:49

crispy whitebait

Buzzybb · 02/08/2010 13:49

Cocaine actually could put sherbet on individual mirrors with an old pound note [we have some framed I wonder if I have enough lol
Sushi or anything 'raw'or very hot chilli is out as two friends are having cancer treatment but individual cheese cake would be good.
Tapas good idea would be a nice starter

Copied this from info about Supersizers - might give you a starting point...

' In the first episode, Giles and Sue investigate the diet of the country in the 1980s. During the show they try Nouvelle cuisine, Microwave meals, Viennetta, Champagne and Pop-Tarts, along with other typical 80s meals...'

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/08/2010 13:50

Ummm - seafood cocktail (that vile seafood mix, bed of iceberg, marie rose sauce, sprinke paprika, a great big tiger prawn on side of the plate)

Beef stroganoff - served a la mode with a circle of rice and the stroganoff plonked in the middle.

Or, steak with pink peppercorns, and nouvelle cuisine vegetables dotted around (mini carrots and beans and sweetcorn). Served with hasselback (sp?) potatoes.

Vienetta for pudding! If yoyu want to make your own, do a passion fruit pavlova.

Are these choices 80s or more 70s though. Hmmm.

Buzzybb · 02/08/2010 13:51

Smile my Mum still drinks Mailibu and milk as does by BF lol

Prawn Cocktail? Coq au Vin?

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/08/2010 13:52

Lol at sherbert cocaine - that is a great idea.

I would laugh though if you mum's neighbours, or members if the rotary or something, popped in on the night and saw your mum sat there with lines of charlie ready to go

notagrannyyet · 02/08/2010 13:52

We must have eaten something in the 80s!
We had our 1st BBQ in the 1980s.....Yes I know rural midlands lags behind.

Well done sausage then!

Yes cheesecake was very popular, and anything Delia of course.

FloraFinching · 02/08/2010 13:52

tiramisu for pudding? or Vienetta?

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/08/2010 13:53

Oh yes tiramisu a great idea.

Buzzybb · 02/08/2010 13:54

GetOrfMoiLand I did that starter and the Beef Stroganoff for the 70's theme but vienetta is good Mum used to use that for birthday cakes for us it would have to be plain though as I don't remember the mint etc
Zippy we will have champagne but I don't own a microwave so can't cook microwave dinners

Hmm, did think it was more 70s actually as I was typing it.

MissAnneElk · 02/08/2010 13:57

Garlic mushrooms to start. Steak with pepper sauce. Profriteroles for pud. Malibu and pineapple, Tia Maria and milk, pils lager, Liebfraumilch, vodka and Russian (think the spelling is wrong but it's a schweppes mixer. I thought they'd stopped making it but it was alive and well in tesco a couple of weeks ago...

notagrannyyet · 02/08/2010 13:59

I think we started to eat more chicken in the 1980s.

I think prawn cocktail was 1970's....Berni Inns!

Blue Nun wine!

Buzzybb · 02/08/2010 14:00

Tiramisu is a standard crap I need a fancy dessert fast so no go I have over done it so it is not appreciated but what about a summer pudding?
Coq au Vin I did for the 60's with meatloaf
Can you buy those sectioned plates that would be fun
BBQ is fun but we tend to have them over for bbq a few times a year, I do remember a Bbq years ago where we served spare ribs with a spicy red sauce and loads of people left it because the thought it was raw

Starter: Satay chicken

Main: chicken kiev

Veg - "potato skins" or that thing where you take the insides out of baked potatoes, mash them up with cheese or other things and shove them back in the oven again.

Other veg - mini sweetcorn and mange tout

Side dish - garlic bread

To drink - Beaujolias Noveau

Pudding - "death by chocolate"

[I was in my prime in the 80s emoticon]

Am I wrong to think this is all current fancy food?

Shocked to find my idea of fancy is 20 years behind the times.
