We've just been to the pub for fish and chips
what about steak, or chops , or beef mince or stew to help your iron levels, with broccoli and orangejuice to drink

DottyDot · 17/07/2010 13:48

How about a piece of steak with some oven chips potatoes?

Or chicken risotto with broccoli in?

I'm permanently anaemic so other than taking iron tablets I crave red meat and broccoli!

My dp and ds's are all away this evening so I might treat myself to a takeaway

mistressploppy · 17/07/2010 13:51

DH is away so I will be having 'absent DH tapas' - ie anything that I can scavenge from the fridge without cooking. Probably cocktail sausages, guacamole and cherry tomatoes.

Thanks to honeydragon for the terminology

Broccoli for Iron - never knew that. Not a big meat eater I'm afraid but I do love my veggies.

Iron was down at 9.? last week and due for c-section in two weeks time so desperately trying to up my intake.

I am taking two sachets of Spatone a day but don't know if this is any good. Do have FERROUS FUMARATE 210MG Tablets but these make me constipated(sorry if TMI). Not sure if i should just start taking these under the circumstances.

mumtoblaire - I know that feeling I find if I carry on taking them though it kind of resolves itself and gets beter, so keep taking them.

Broccoli's great for iron - you could make a chicken stir fry if you've got some? With broccoli, onion, peppers - whatever you've got handy?!

Or my vote's still for takeaway!

MrsY · 17/07/2010 14:08

Have a salad with some baby spinach - good for iron.

We're having salad with grilled chicken, grilled haloumi and peach, sugar snap peas, peppers and spring onion.

Then we're having dark choc brownies and white choc blondies 'cos I made some for church tomorrow and they look scrummy !

shinyshoes · 17/07/2010 14:09

steamed salmon ,with crushed new potatoes and rocket

mumtoblaire · 17/07/2010 14:09

Yeah I think I will start taking them just to be on the safe side.

Chicken and broccoli sounds nice. May head to shops and buy some.

green leafy veg are a fairly good source of iron and vitamin c will help your body absorb iron.

And a good plain chocolate will also have a decent amount of iron (if you need an excuse reason to eat some chocolate).

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 14:12

We're having veggie sausages, new potatoes, carrots, savoy cabbage, peas and sweetcorn.

Cherry pie and custard for oud if I can be bothered to make pastry.

I think that the savoy might be good for iron. Dried apricot flapjack maybe?

MrsY · 17/07/2010 14:12

Oh, and I was told not to bother with Spatone and so on after my daughter was born (lost lots of blood, and was iron was low enough to need a transfer but couldn't have one) as it's better to get it naturally from food.

Steaks, liver, and steamed clams are good as are green beans (or any green veg) and tofu, and drinking orange juice helps your body absorp the iron better, as does eating strawberries, melon and grapefruit.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 17/07/2010 14:15

A Jamie Oliver Lamb dish with Butternut squash and roasted new spuds. All cooked by DH who does all the cooking in this house!!

Headbanger · 17/07/2010 14:19

Baked butternut squash with feta & basil stuffing, and I've got 2 artichokes gazing reproachfully at me from the dresser, so I suppose I'd better work out what the devil to do with them...

Then peach crumble and ice cream. Ooooooo I'm hungry now.

Re iron - MrsY has it down - liver liver liver! If I'm feeling really run down I have liver/steak (depending on how recently I was paid) with a huge pile of spinach and a glass of red wine.

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 14:23

Ooh that sounds lovely, Headbanger (the feta thing).

Headbanger · 17/07/2010 14:35

I just tried to post the link but it wouldn't work . It's an HFW recipe on the Channel 4 site & looks lush. Cheap as well...

Pavlov · 17/07/2010 14:37

Have no idea. Going for tea with some friends and they have not told us yet. But Pudding is apple and summer fruit crumble, made by DH - that is mostly what I care about

aristocat · 17/07/2010 15:17

just making Chicken Biryani ...... hope its ok

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2010 15:48

We are having steak and kidney pie with broccoli or salad.

MoonFaceMama · 17/07/2010 16:23

Late lunch of dh's lovely soup, and achey back have taken the edge of my appetite...very unusual!

So tea will probably be pasta with things out of the garden (courgettes, beans, kale) or a big bowl of cabbage...we have a lot of cabbage at the moment.

meltedmarsbars · 17/07/2010 16:40

We're having snitchels with potato salad (russian style with ham and peas in it, already made by dh) with green beans and spinach from garden. Hot meat and veg with cold spuds?

Followed by caramelised apricots. Dh allergic to raw apricots so have to cook them. Might crumble or tart them, but already had gooseberry tart last night.

BeenBeta · 17/07/2010 16:48

Dont eat dinner. We dont, keeps us slim.

Just have a proper lunch instead.

Fibilou · 17/07/2010 16:51

MoonFaceMama · 17/07/2010 16:56

I prefer a proper lunch and a proper dinner!

meltedmarsbars · 17/07/2010 16:58

BeenBeta - we don't eat much lunch, keeps us slim, but have a proper dinner instead

meltedmarsbars · 17/07/2010 16:58
