Utterly mind-blowing. James Cameron is a genius!
What an amazing movie, it has had so much hype that I didn't really believe it could possibly live up to it all, how wrong I was!!

Also the first time I have seen a movie in 3D and it was incredible. At times I felt dizzy from the great heights, other times you are actually seeing what the characters see and feel like you are actually there.

Definitely recommend it, I am a wee bit of a sci-fi geek anyway when it comes to movies but this had the whole theatre gasping!

no if it's a 12a it means children under 12 can go if accompanied by an adult (I think!)

Hi. can anyone tell me if there are any scary scenes
my dd is 6 and desparate to see it as are we and it is 12a so she is allowed . She watches 12 films on tv and understand s whats real etc . I am just worried there may be some hidden scary bits. she will easily sit still so not worried about that as we go and see shows and go to the cinema all the time. thanks

Snorbs · 22/12/2009 00:07

bishboschone, there are some fairly scary and big alien monsters jumping out - lots of teeth and claws. I'm not going to take my 8yo DD as I think it would be too scary for her. Some of the language is a bit strong, too.

bishboschone · 22/12/2009 14:59

thanks snorbs we took her today and she was fine. very proud of her she wasnt scared and understood it and managed to sit still for 3 hours.. better than I did!! thanks anyway

Saw it 2 nights ago. Thought it was FABAROONEY.
Did think the story was a bit simplistic, but that was fine.
Wore the glassses. Over my normal specs. But do you know what, alot of the time, I couldn't actually see any 3D. Like there were certain times when things came flying towards me, or at the end it was snowing with debris, and it was like it was snowing in the cinema, which was fab.
But when I got out dh said that there was loads of 3D and he couldn't understand why I hadn't been able to see it.
Mind you, a couple of months ago they had a 3D week on sky and alot of the stuff I couldn't see then.
Do you think that some people can't see as much 3D as others ?

Oblomov · 29/12/2009 10:09

Bish, ds1 is 6 and no I don't think it is suitable. He is scared by very little - likes star wars, merlin, indiana jones, james bond films.
But dh and I both agreed it was totally unsuitable.

coldtits · 30/12/2009 01:31

AWESOME

just AWESOME

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 30/12/2009 13:01

It certainly was!!

We did go for the 3d version in the end. Was quite hard and very headache making by the end but was worth it. Only 3d bit I could see was the embers and the translations. (tried to wipe an ember away and dd thought one had got stuck to her lollipop! dh and dd said it was very 3d.

Came away in awe, even more so when dh reminded me that so much of it was computer gen. It looked real.

notyummy · 30/12/2009 13:11

Also loved it - thought dialogue and story line were both a bit cheesy tbh - plus characterisation a bit black and white. However this is from the guy who brought us the absolute cheesefest that is Titantic...so I expected that!

The film itself is BEAUTIFUL though and very easy to lose yourself in. There were kids at the one I went to who looked about 8/9 and they seemed to like it. My mum who is 72 went yesterday and also loved it!!

CaptainNancy · 30/12/2009 13:30

Well... the plot was pretty ropy, and the characters were all complete stereotypes... but the cgi was out of this world. The 3D isn't necessary, but does /make it incredibly beautiful. I too find 3d difficult- eyes of very different strengths, but wore my own specs beneath the 3D ones. Roffle at cardboard r/b specs!
There were also quite a few interesting concepts in it too.
I thought the lead male was actually very good, though have never seen him in anything else (knowingly).

Sandy22 · 03/01/2010 17:06

Well I thought it was okay, yes the colours were beautiful and the cgi excellent but the story line was rubbish - would I go again - no not at all.

streakybacon · 06/01/2010 08:09

I thought it was a bit crap actually. After 20 minutes I got technology fatigue - yes, it was cleverly done and interesting to look at but waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too long and the story was dreadful. Highly over-hyped. Would rather stick pins in my eyes than see it again.

Now Sherlock Holmes, on the other hand ...

vjg13 · 22/01/2010 13:46

The plot was pathetic but the 3D was amazing. The main guy was tasty in a Max Beasley kind of way .

Who thought of calling the precious mineral 'unobtainium'!

meridian · 28/01/2010 12:04

it was awsome fun.. terrible script.. sriously all that money Mr Cameron and the best mineral name you could come up with was Unobtainium? I'm sure that must have been a total pisstake.... I knew all the moeny went on the 3D and that part was mazing but the dialogue was halfassed ..and the basic story was Ferngully/Dances with wolves 9ft tall blue cats ... or possibly Pocohontas

paisleyleaf · 29/01/2010 23:17

I liked that the story was so parallel to the Native Americans, and American attitude since (in some gun-ho ways). And environmental issues.

pickupthismess · 30/01/2010 12:16

Desperate to see Avatar but can't wear contacts. Can you wear 3D glasses over glasses?

JulesJules · 30/01/2010 12:26

Yes you can wear 3D glasses over glasses, but we went to see it in 2D at it was still great to look at, so I wouldn't worry about it.

GothDetective · 30/01/2010 12:42

I wore the 3d glasses over my own with no problem.

pickupthismess · 30/01/2010 21:13

Excellent thanks.

ravenophelia · 30/01/2010 21:16

this film was fantastic.when i first heard about it i didnt think i would like it but i loved it.i cried at the end.

sfxmum · 31/01/2010 15:01

I watched it last Wednesday (with another Mnetter )

3D glasses over my specs
I thought it was visually amazing loved all the floaty things in front of my nose

some of the imagery was a tad dubious and the new age type talk occasionally grating but what the hell it was a wonderful ride a visual treat which I would pay again to see

I've just taken DS1 to see Avatar and OMG I absolutely loved it! It's one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen.
Yeah the plot's pretty simple but it doesn't matter. In fact I think a complicated plot would have spoiled it as you get to just sit back and look at the beauty of it without having to try and keep up with what's going on.
DS1 (7) loved it too. I thought DS2 (5) was too young so he saw something else with DP.
I want to go and see it again
