AvadaKedavra · 28/11/2009 11:40

oh any kind of genre - I love book adaptations and action/thrillers/thinkers the best, but open to anything really

Quite old but have you seen Kind Hearts and Coronets? It's an Ealing Comedy, definitely a must-see in my book!

Twelve Monkeys - action/thinky film.
The Spanish Prisoner
The Game

AvadaKedavra · 28/11/2009 17:47

Seen Twelve Monkeys only out of that lot, will add them onto list.

Are the foreign sounding ones actually foreign? I don't do subtitled films

JaneiteMightBite · 28/11/2009 22:46

The Breakfast Club = best film ever made imho.

I would also say:
Priscilla Queen Of The Desert;
Clueless;
The Green Mile;
Breakfast At Tiffany's.

lou33 · 29/11/2009 00:15

5 of them are subtitled, one is partially so

watch them anyway!

AvadaKedavra · 29/11/2009 19:21

The Green Mile, one of those films always meant to watch so added that.
Lou, which are the 5?

Bringing up Baby
The Philadelphia Story
Some like it hot
Jaws
Brief Encounter
Carnival of Souls
Citizen Kane
Juno
It's a Wonderful Life
Harvey
All the Coen Brothers films
Terminator
Bladerunner

choosyfloosy · 29/11/2009 21:10

It's subtitled but Tell No One is frigging fantastic.

Vantage Point was fun and involving at the time.

The Walker went down v well with dh and me but I have a possibly unusual permanent crush on Woody Harrelson. Is a bit talky.

The People Vs Larry Flynt is amazing IMO but is another Woody one.

The Aviator was absolutely magnificent - very long but just so delightful. Leo, where did it all go wrong?

I assume you've seen Field of Dreams? Unmissable if not.

Bulldog Durham (train of thought because of kevin costner.)

The Four Seasons with Alan Alda. It's a hundred years old but I used to love it when I saw it on the telly.

choosyfloosy · 29/11/2009 21:11

It's a real risk transferring stuff you've loved at the cinema/earlier life onto DVD. I found His Girl Friday almost unwatchable on DVD, ditto a few musicals I thought I would get into. Odd.

notnowbernard · 29/11/2009 21:14

Hairspray (the original John Walters one)

lou33 · 29/11/2009 21:18

yes, agree the wrestler is good, and bad santa is funny

notnowbernard · 29/11/2009 21:20

I think The Wrestler may be my favourite film actually

I fell in love with Mickey Rourke when I watched it and believe me, he ain't pretty in it

But demonstrates the strength of his performance, I guess

SofaQueen · 29/11/2009 21:23

A Little Romance
The Breakfast Club
Running on Empty
The Shawshank Redemption
Searching for Bobby Fischer
Harold and Maude
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Sabrina
Some Like it Hot
Sunset Boulevard
the Apartment
The Thomas Crowne Affair (the original one)
To Kill a Mockingbird
All About Eve
The Philadelphia Story
It's A Wonderful Life
Rear Window
Citizen Kane
Argent de Poche
A Bout de Souffle (Breathless)
Les Quatre Cent Coups (400 Blows)
Tampopo

OK. I'll stop now.

notnowbernard · 29/11/2009 21:24

Oh yes, To Kill A Mocking Bird - beautiful film

Thingiebob · 29/11/2009 21:32

what kind of films do you like?

What do you dislike?
For example I'm not that keen on chick flicks/horror movies or mindless action movies, unless they have some humour in them.

If you like sci-fi/time travel/supernatural for example
try

Being John Malkovich
Donnie Darko
Mulholland Drive

For comedy

Little Miss Sunshine
Tropic Thunder - funniest film I've seen this year
