Was that the Celia Ahern book? Loved the book.

FruitynNutty · 04/01/2009 22:06

Love it love it love it

FairLadyRantALot · 04/01/2009 22:06

no idea who wrote the book....sorry....

I thought that I'd loathe it, but loved it

dyzzidi · 04/01/2009 22:07

My god how i cried at that film.

FairLadyRantALot · 04/01/2009 22:07

tbh, I thought it might be mediocre at best....so...was really surprised just how emotional it made me feel....

Really??

I watched it last night and though it was the biggest load of shite I'd ever seen.
Dh made me watch it til the end.
It was marginally worse than the book if thats at all possible

TheInnocentBystander · 04/01/2009 22:08

I thought it was a cheesefest....but still liked it!

FairLadyRantALot · 04/01/2009 22:08

mosschops, what made you not like it?

OP posts:
TheInnocentBystander · 04/01/2009 22:09

I thought Hilary Swank was wooden too.

used2bthin · 04/01/2009 22:10

It is cheesey but I am another fan, I watch it a lot! I love the music and the clothes as much as the film. Want to watch it again now...

mosschops30 · 04/01/2009 22:11

Oh god how long have you got

The stereotypical cheeky oirish bloke, with leather jacket too
Hilary Swank being so wooden it hurt
Bits of it were dragged out sooooo long I wanted to die myself
All the two dimensional friends

I just hated it, and could imagine lots of dull americans flocking to ireland to meet lovely irish men 'just like in the film'.

TheInnocentBystander · 04/01/2009 22:11

Funny you should say that I liked the clothes, Hilary wore some nice tops

sandcastles · 04/01/2009 22:12

Goober, yes it is! I really liked the book, had read several times.

I found the movie a bit let down after the book, they just changed too many details for the big screen. She wasn't American, FFS! No mention of her huge family, she had one sister...in the book she had several siblings. They could have kept it closer to the book & still made it good.

But I guess that is what happens when you sell out to the American film ind.

TheInnocentBystander · 04/01/2009 22:13

I couldn't quite 'get' the character she was trying to play either.

Goober · 04/01/2009 22:16

In that case I'll give it a miss and just read the book again.

katiepotatie · 04/01/2009 22:17

I loved it too, even though it was a cheese fest, DH was crying before me!

used2bthin · 04/01/2009 22:18

Theinnocentbystander yes really lovely tops! Mosschops I loved Jerry! I want to go to Ireland to meet men like him I actually thought he was meant to be Italian though at the begining of the fim!

FairLadyRantALot · 04/01/2009 22:20

hmmm...well...o.k.. a lot of stereotyping...that is true....but the story, the idea of letters and that deep love....

must say, it made me feel bad when watching it as in...I don't think I would react like that....and....it kinda made me question my love for my dh....

OP posts:
TheInnocentBystander · 04/01/2009 22:22

Did you see that crap acting near the end when she was crying to her mum though? She wasn't crying at all, no tears nothing, just going boo hoo. Honestly! They could have got some fake tears on her or something.

muggglewump · 04/01/2009 22:23

I liked the book but thought the film utter rubbish.

mosschops30 · 04/01/2009 22:32

'that deep love' oh please, no one lives like that it was so unrealistic.
Films like this are why so many women are unhappy in their marriage and I said as much to dh last night (mosschops folds arms in the manner of Les Dawson dressed as old woman)

FairLadyRantALot · 04/01/2009 22:47

so, I'm not an uncaring monster
that is lacking somehow....? phew!
I still liked the movie, though....

I was told on Mumsnet that it was shite some time ago - but watched it anyway and thought it was quiet good. Apart from some dodgy accents, it was quiet sweet and I loved Jeff Dean Morgan in it (the singer in the pub) - bloody gorgeous!

nickschick · 08/01/2009 17:52

I watched this on monday and i felt let down too the book was fab i spent a week reading it late at night in bed with tears streaming down my face but the film just was ....well........crap!!!

I think if youve read the book the film cant live upto it.
