Utterly Horrified at children’s film

Picked up a dvd of the 2002 “Scooby Doo” film from a local charity shop as my children seemed interested in watching it and I had never seen it. What was the director THINKING! This is NOT the family friendly Scooby Doo I remember from my childhood! Countless drug references, girls wearing practically nothing and some of the worst humour I have ever seen in a film rated PARENTAL GUIDANCE!! I’m appalled, luckily the kids did not seem to catch any of these themes and were just entertained by the antics of the CGI dog on-screen. Anybody else had a similar experience with this film??

You probably just didn’t pick up all the references in your childhood! It’s a bit like pantomime - the dodgy stuff goes over children’s heads, but amuses the adults.

Snorlaxo · 18/02/2026 15:25

A lot of kids films have innuendo as jokes for the adults.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 18/02/2026 15:25

So when you saw it was a PG, what did you do to find out if it was suitable for your children? Eg did you read the Parental Guidance section freely available on imdb? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0267913/parentalguide/?ref_=tt_stry_pg

WallaceinAnderland · 18/02/2026 15:25

Better not watch Watership Down then.

HollyGolightly4 · 18/02/2026 15:27

Hyperbolic much?! Utterly horrified seems ridiculously over the top.

Next time, I suggest you use common sense media to decide if it's appropriate for your children:

This. The Shrek films have a lot of adult relationship themes in them that go over the kids heads.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 18/02/2026 15:27

Love that film. For both the parents and children to enjoy.

“luckily the kids did not seem to catch any of these themes and were just entertained by the antics of the CGI dog on-screen.”

This is what family films have always been. Adult humour/references that goes over the heads of children but that the parents ‘get’. The original 70s animated series had similar double entendres and drug references (Shaggy was constantly ravenously hungry, and super laid back….?) and so did many other kids programs and films. If Scoobydo upsets you, you might want to avoid The Magic Roundabout and The Herb Garden…..

My children watched (repeatedly, they loved them) these films 20 years ago and neither of them are drug crazed sex addicts, so I think yours will be ok.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 18/02/2026 15:36

My niece made me watch that on repeat when she was about 7 or so. Neither of us have suffered any adverse effects.

Paganpentacle · 18/02/2026 15:57

I do hope you didn't watch Big Cook, Little Cook then back in the day.
They were always talking about purple helmets and smirking at the camera....

ArticWillow · 18/02/2026 16:02

Thank goodness for some adult humour (pun intended) in children's films.

How else would we survive a movie night with the kids?

katmarie · 18/02/2026 16:10

Can I just say I love the IMDB parents guide. I found it so useful in trying to decide whether or not to allow my 6 and 8 yr olds to watch the minecraft movie (I opted for not).

May I ask what's wrong with the film? Haven't seen it myself but the kids love the game.

I find it hard to believe the 2002 Scooby-Doo film is that shocking to you.

Haven't you seen many other kid's films that also contain content for adults that go over the kids' heads? It happens a lot.

Arlanymor · 18/02/2026 16:18

Have you ever been to a panto..?

DestinedToBeOutlived · 18/02/2026 16:19

Scooby doo is one long drugs reference. What do you think a scooby snack is?

BarnacleBeasley · 18/02/2026 16:21

Not exactly the same thing, but I recently let my 4 year old watch Mary Poppins and then found myself having to explain what a run on a bank is, and how banking works in general. And what suffragettes were, why women weren't allowed to vote, and what voting is.

SharonWTheBest · 18/02/2026 16:22

Yeah, sorry to say it, but you're being ridiculous. You're being too sensitive, and if the kids didn't even notice it, then why are you complaining? If you're that sensitive to harmless jokes, then go and watch something like the Peppa Pig movies instead.

BauhausOfEliott · 18/02/2026 16:24

I honestly don't know how people like this function day to day if they're 'utterly horrified' by a PG-rated Scooby Doo film.

gototogo · 18/02/2026 16:25

@BarnacleBeasley

thats brilliant. Never too young to learn about history, democracy and economics. My DD’s and I went to an exhibition on the suffragettes when they were 6&4 , it’s stuck with them and they are militant voters

Trallers · 18/02/2026 16:29

I haven't seen that film, but would probably agree with you from what you've described.

Don't watch The Cat in The Hat either, it's absolute innuendo filled trash.

I'm not averse to kids films having humour for adults in, but some really miss the mark. If it's just filth packaged up in a way kids won't understand that then I do have a problem with personally (ill accept I'm a prude though!). I also hate films aimed at, (and starring) teens that are packed full of sex yet made by adults men. It feels icky to me

Vaguelyclassical · 18/02/2026 16:37

Would you like me to lend you some smelling salts OP?

Wabbajack · 18/02/2026 16:39

I used to love that film as a kid, saw it at the cinema when it came out and must have watched the DVD a hubdred times. Definitely don't remember picking up on any sex or drug references.

BotterMon · 18/02/2026 16:40

God forbid they ever watch The Magic Roundabout 🙄

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/02/2026 16:48

I suggest you go back and watch the "family friendly" scooby doo cartoons from your childhood @iadoremychildren678 .

See what you think "scooby snacks" are alluding too. Have a think about what might of caused Shaggys behaviour. Wonder why Fred and Daphne always go off together when they decide to split up.
