Utterly Horrified at children’s film

Picked up a dvd of the 2002 “Scooby Doo” film from a local charity shop as my children seemed interested in watching it and I had never seen it. What was the director THINKING! This is NOT the family friendly Scooby Doo I remember from my childhood! Countless drug references, girls wearing practically nothing and some of the worst humour I have ever seen in a film rated PARENTAL GUIDANCE!! I’m appalled, luckily the kids did not seem to catch any of these themes and were just entertained by the antics of the CGI dog on-screen. Anybody else had a similar experience with this film??

I was a little kid back then (I'm bloody old).

My parents referred to Shaggy as the pothead. He was widely regarded as such. Certainly in Canada anyway.

(And yes, Scooby Snacks were for the dog and not drugs, but became a term for it later)

Edited

People can read in what they like to any show. Happens a lot with children’s programmes and films because of the supposed ‘thrill’ of uncovering a secret ‘naughty’ meaning in an innocent work.

Were the Banana Splits on drugs? Was Hong Kong Phooey a secret triad member? Were the Wombles squatters and hippies? Did The Herbs actually live on a cannabis farm? And on and on.

OP, PG stands for parental guidance. If you don’t do anything to check that it’s suitable that’s on you.

personally I don’t have an issue with this one or others like it but I always check if I’m unsure of the content

Theres nothing like re-watching a film with young children. I took my two to see chicken run recently. The absolute horror. We didnt make it to the end, so im pretty sure they both think the giant spinning death blades of the pie machine get them all.

They didn't think it was a secret they were all clever to 'discover' a secret. They honestly thought that was who Shaggy was supposed to be.

You have just brought an awful flashback to me. I forgot that film existed but now I recall going to the cinema to see it when I was a teenager and thinking it was shite. Shudder. I can’t imagine my child wanting to watch scooby doo now anyway. It’s pretty dated isn’t it ?

Found out recently the Asian guy in short circuit 2 is a white guy with his face painted and a terrible accent. Didn't notice as a child, watched a clip thinking about showing it to ds , quickly decided not to!

Also shaggy and Scooby have always been stoners that's the point

Better not watch Watership Down then.

Watership Down was brutal although I can't remember why (I was a teen and couldn't watch it all the way through)

Honestly back in the 70s my mum took us to see grease, l was 10, l was absolutely shocked when l saw it as an adult, all the sex stuff went right over my head.
My kids loved that Scrooby doo film, they were born mid 90's im not sure l ever watched it, just put it on dvd and left them to it, they seem to have no adverse reactions

May I ask what's wrong with the film? Haven't seen it myself but the kids love the game.

My older kid has a bit of a fear of zombies, and the IMDB parent guide suggests there are a lot of references to zombies plus a fair bit of low level violence. My kids have played a bit of Minecraft but not a huge amount and I dont think they're missing out by not watching it. The parents guide was helpful enough for me to decide it was one I would possibly watch at home with them when it comes around to the small screen, where I can manage it if its not great for them.
