Anyone planning to see this? From the trailer I was expecting it to be marmite and not in any way a straight adaptation of the novel, but the reviews I've seen so far are universally uncomplimentary. I'd already booked to see it, so will go in with an open mind!

Margot Robbie has got a lot more about her. She's a character actress and think she's very much in the mould of Cate Blancette. She will have a long career because she's happy to play different roles, instead of just being the pretty love interest.

I think she’s great. I just think she’s very contemporary looking. It took all the white makeup to make her look like Elizabeth I. Like Keira Knightley is very contemporary looking, to the point I find it distracting in period roles.

SpringCalling · 13/02/2026 22:53

So it was better than I expected given the reviews. We knew the story would be mangled. My best moments: Isabelle’s pop up book, the leech death scene, the stabbed doll. Most annoying bit: Wuthering Heights itself - Yorkshire stone is atmospheric enough, why on earth did they make it with what looked like CGI?

I’ve not read the book but I found the film OK. Almosf all the characters are vile though and Jacob Elordi is a really shite actor. Passed the time though.

But he's very cute.

I love Wuthering Heights as a book, but I’ve been put off seeing it because of the reviews. For the people who have seen it - what do the reviews mean when they say there is lots of sex and BDSM ? I read one review that likened it to soft porn at times, and I just don’t want to see that. Is it really that bad? Or are the reviews exaggerating?

Rabidturnip · 13/02/2026 23:24

I saw it tonight and I loved it. Barely any bdsm, and mild at best IMO.

Rabidturnip · 13/02/2026 23:25

I wouldn’t say it was soft porn, just a lot of sexual tension. Yes there was “sex” but I saw more flesh in the Housemaid sex scene than in WH.

LongTermLurker · 13/02/2026 23:29

Just seen it, and I loved it!

I've seen WH today and I absolutely loved everything about it.

I haven't read the book, although Ive read and heard a lot of discussion around it.

I know a lot of people say the book wasn't a love story, but for me, this film definitely is, albeit pretty dark and fucked up.

Martin Clunes had a great part as did Isabella Linton.

Would love to hear others' opinions who've seen it!

I saw it tonight and liked it more than I thought I would - agree with the high points above - pop up book and dolls house.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 13/02/2026 22:33

I’ve seen it.
WH is one of my all time favourite books. I love the way EB writes. Her ability to make seemingly horrible, unlikeable characters totally fascinating and perfectly nice characters unlikeable is incredible.
I came away with mixed feelings after seeing the film. The casting was at best odd. Typical Hollywood. The major characters much older than in the book. Edgar especially was far too old. I’m all for diversity but the characters were far from how EB depicted them. Maybe it’s a Hollywood thing, maybe they really wanted ‘names’ to draw in the audiences.
I also struggled with Martin Clunes, he just wasn’t quite right, although he did seem to grow into the role as the film progressed. It isn’t a retelling of the book, rather a loose adaptation of it.
The Yorkshire moors are a huge part of the book. The film depicts them in Hollywood style. The moors help shape who Heathcliff & Catherine are. The film misses this. The moors are a character and the film cannot quite get this.
However, as a toxic love story I liked it. I found the end scenes very moving and well done. I thought JE gave a good shot at a Yorkshire accent. It was sensual and yes had lots of shots of a wet JE wearing a white shirt all Colin Farrell like, which I did enjoy.
The ending was emotional and well done and surprisingly sad.
I’m going to read the book again.

I now want to read the book too.

Agree with your post, other than that I really loved the casting!

My only wish is that we'd had a bit more time with the characters as children to provide a bit more context.

The bdsm scenes are few and far between. Don't let that deter you.

Any Hollywood film depicting the old days has a cast full of perfectly straight white teeth & clear skin. I don’t think that’s an accurate depiction at all 😆

Fear not! Martin Clunes character's teeth compensate for this in latter scenes!

Can't be doing with the whinging from people who haven't actually seen it!

Driftingawaynow · 13/02/2026 23:48

Apparently there’s no zombies in it so I’ll swerve

Ditto! Lots of audience members were laughing out loud at the phallic imagery...

I thought he wasn't handsome enough to be Heathcliff..!

cucumberpeach · 14/02/2026 00:54

Currently deciding whether to go and see it. I don't mind a whacky inaccurate take on the book - it is art after all - but most reviews I've seen said it's not very good - no chemistry between the actors and quite shallow. Not everyone seems to hate it here though so maybe I will 😅

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 14/02/2026 06:33

I would recommend people see it.
If you haven’t read the book then you don’t have anything to compare it with.
The book is a masterpiece, it truly is. Very few authors can achieve what Emily Brontë did. The whole point is that the main characters are deeply flawed yet you cannot help but be drawn to them and root for them. The perfectly nice Lintons receive no sympathy. That was Emily Brontes genius.
Both Catherine and Heathcliff are horrible, far worse than the film depicts. Yet such well written, deep characters and the book explains why they are like they are.
The film also doesn’t have one of the central characters . Again this character shapes the person Heathcliff becomes.
Having said all this when is a film as good as the book? Only when the book is merely average at best.
Emily Brontes writing will never be described as average.

In the past I've read that some period films/TV dramas state that you can't audition unless your hair and eyebrows are natural. I suppose you could get around the (highlighted/unnatural) hair issue with a very expensive wig...

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/02/2026 11:50

If you’re looking for a proper adaptation you’ll be disappointed

if you don’t care that it vaguely relates to the book in such a way as to be “inspired by” you’ll be ok

I've listened to/read some reviews now and I hate it more if anything. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone

Martin Clunes and Alison Oliver WERE great in it even if their characters and storylines are greatly changed from source.

No one laughed when i saw it last night.
It is one of my favourite books ,i have lost count of how many times I've read it .
It is absolutely not a love story until near the end with Catherine and Hareton.
I have been desperate to see this film and went with a totally open mind and perhaps low expectations, i absolutely loved it !
Bizarre and surreal with some visual treats, i quite like the way EF changed some of the characters behaviours ,missed some out altogether and did what she said she was going to do which was to give us an interpretation of how the book makes her feel.
I was unsure of Robbie and Elordi when their names were published , i have never see any of their films but I think they were perfect in this.
The end was profound for me , not rushed just quiet and powerful ,absolutely perfect but so sad .
I wanted to watch it over again.

Oh bore off. I haven’t read the book, it was on the higher English curriculum but I chose something else, and still got an A. Is that alright with you? It’s not compulsory to have read WH.

And your reading comprehension is clearly not all that even having read one of the greatest tomes ever written, as it was clear I was giving my view on the film, not the book.

Just because it has been thought of in a certain way, doesn't mean everyone will agree. I studied it for English Lang&Lit A Level, got an A, absolutely hated it.
