Anyone planning to see this? From the trailer I was expecting it to be marmite and not in any way a straight adaptation of the novel, but the reviews I've seen so far are universally uncomplimentary. I'd already booked to see it, so will go in with an open mind!

It looks crap. I love the book but it just doesn’t seem to translate into a good film. There have been so many attempts and none of them have been great

FatCatPyjamas · 11/02/2026 18:13

I hated the trailer and thought Robbie looked like a Disney Princess in those swathes of fabric and bows.

I'll be truly interested in a film adaptation only when the marketing is accurate. "The greatest love story of all time," my arse. "Relational toxicity at it's worst!" is more to my liking.

Is that how it's marketed? How ludicrous.

Margot is a decent actress, but , unfortunately for her career, is very beautiful, in a Hollywood way.
In her previous (rubbish) film, with Colin Farrell, she played a pixie girl, and, again, it just didn't work.
If we had to have a Big Name, i would have liked to see Emma Stone in the role.

Lottapianos · 13/02/2026 15:32

Just seen it. Margot is great (and so beautiful) but she's NOT Cathy. The costumes and interiors are stunning - I gasped out loud a couple of times. Great soundtrack. Some v hot scenes

Other than that, hmm...... Think of it as Emerald Fennell's version of Wuthering Heights rather than a faithful adaptation of the book. I do admire her flamboyant flashy style as a director though

FcukBreastCancer · 13/02/2026 16:39

Loved the acting

Hated the CGI and the strange background noises at times, like my tinnitus

why is that unfortunate? Would she be famous based on talent alone?

Sausagenbacon · 13/02/2026 16:59

For the reasons i gave

This is what happens when a successful screenwriter / director is given just a tad too much freedom.

Cathy and Heathcliff as children were charming. The rest was an almost total waste of an afternoon. (‘Almost’ because at least now I can pontificate about it with the advantage of having seen it.😂)

The casting is so utterly perverse. It doesn’t matter that I don’t personally find either of the lead actors appealing, (though he was good in Euphoria) but there was zero chemistry between them, so all the histrionics seemed artificial.

It looked grand, but to no purpose. The score would have been effective if it had heralded even one genuine emotion, but there were none.

I didn’t believe a single thing on screen from beginning to end, so fir me it was a failure.

treeowl · 13/02/2026 17:09

I think it’s an unusual pov to see beauty as a hindrance for a Hollywood actress but if you don’t want to discuss it fair enough!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/02/2026 17:23

Saw it today. Crushing disappointment. Changes so much of the actual story

Sausagenbacon · 13/02/2026 17:23

Ok, i thought i had.
So, does anyone believe that Margot Robbie was brought up in 18th century Yorkshire?

I think it can be if you want longevity. YOU just get cast as beautiful love interests and aren't really taken seriously as an actress and aren't cast in anything really challenging so once you hit 35 there is a risk that there are a million younger 'pretty young things' around who are now younger than you. I mean, I like Margot Robbie so I don't know if she would have been as famous if she was not beautiful but was talented. I think shes perfectly nice but have just seen her in things like Barbie and the Wolf of Wall Street. I think Lily James may be similar. Beautiful, but now getting older I don't know if she would get into that 'older woman but still a great actress' category. You have more of a chance I think of having a long, steady career if you are not conventionally attractive but end up plugging away at things, unless you go full Matthew McConaghey and do the alternative of refusing Himbo parts until you get something else. I'm not sure if that really makes sense. Hollywood is massively sexist and ageist.

'So, does anyone believe that Margot Robbie was brought up in 18th century Yorkshire?'

Cathy and Heathcliff had totally different accents too despite growing up together. Annoying

I don’t think we are meant to believe that are we? And it’s very normal for Hollywood films to not reflect reality.

Yes, it’s not a new thing. Beauty is important and you age out very quickly bar the odd few.

treeowl · 13/02/2026 17:48

Any Hollywood film depicting the old days has a cast full of perfectly straight white teeth & clear skin. I don’t think that’s an accurate depiction at all 😆

Well, she's acting the part of a woman brought up in late 18thc Yorkshire. (At least, in the novel of WH. The trailer for this adaptation suggests she was born on the set of Carry On Up My Crinoline.)

PuppyMonkey · 13/02/2026 17:55

I’m also very reluctant to see this, it’s my favourite novel and have read it so many times. I know it’s a very difficult book but God, the most revolutionary thing any director could do would be to just adapt what Emily Brontë wrote in a two of three part way if necessary. The whole thing. With everyone the right age, Catherine having a Yorkshire accent, Heathcliff looking like a Romany gypsy - and us not seeing them ever have sex.

With that Home Counties accent, no. Heathcliff however sounds like Sean Bean doin' it fer Yorkshire.

Crinolines were decades away, too.

Margot Robbie has got a lot more about her. She's a character actress and think she's very much in the mould of Cate Blancette. She will have a long career because she's happy to play different roles, instead of just being the pretty love interest.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 13/02/2026 22:33

I’ve seen it.
WH is one of my all time favourite books. I love the way EB writes. Her ability to make seemingly horrible, unlikeable characters totally fascinating and perfectly nice characters unlikeable is incredible.
I came away with mixed feelings after seeing the film. The casting was at best odd. Typical Hollywood. The major characters much older than in the book. Edgar especially was far too old. I’m all for diversity but the characters were far from how EB depicted them. Maybe it’s a Hollywood thing, maybe they really wanted ‘names’ to draw in the audiences.
I also struggled with Martin Clunes, he just wasn’t quite right, although he did seem to grow into the role as the film progressed. It isn’t a retelling of the book, rather a loose adaptation of it.
The Yorkshire moors are a huge part of the book. The film depicts them in Hollywood style. The moors help shape who Heathcliff & Catherine are. The film misses this. The moors are a character and the film cannot quite get this.
However, as a toxic love story I liked it. I found the end scenes very moving and well done. I thought JE gave a good shot at a Yorkshire accent. It was sensual and yes had lots of shots of a wet JE wearing a white shirt all Colin Farrell like, which I did enjoy.
The ending was emotional and well done and surprisingly sad.
I’m going to read the book again.

Alpacajigsaw · 13/02/2026 22:49

I’ve not read the book but I found the film OK. Almosf all the characters are vile though and Jacob Elordi is a really shite actor. Passed the time though.
