Hoping to see it at the weekend, Jessie Buckley has been excellent in anything of hers I have seen.

Will be interested in other's thoughts once they have seen it.

Agree. There seemed to be lots of ideas never fully realised and the time dragged. The Globe scenes annoyed me, the punters were too well behaved and I’ve seen enough Hamlet to not-need to see the ending(or the part they showed of it) again. I would have preferred it to explore the differing concepts of death and the afterlife, revisiting her mysticism and non Christian views from Greek myths for example, than an absolute definition of Hamlet as the outlet for his grief. It will undoubtedly delight an American audience with the artsy cinematography and twee depiction of Shakespeare’s England.

This American really couldn’t stand the film..

I found it completely unmoving, fake, boring and manipulative. The only part that got to me were the words of Shakespeare- the rest of it just didn't seem well written or conceived.

I probably shouldn't have gone, because I tend to find period acting unconvincing- self consciously smudged faces, stilted language mixed with anachronisms, dirty cloths being squeezed into buckets with drippy sounds. I particularly hated the scene of the children playing and the love scenes, just seemed so fake to me.

💯

So much hype indeed.
I much preferred Wuthering Heights.

Delighted for Jessie Buckley winning the Oscar.

If you've ever lost a child, please don't go. Spare yourself. I went and cried and cried at the ending. Don't do it to yourself. Watch it in private when it's streaming if you must.

I agree. If you have an estranged child also .

I saw it with my young adult daughter, I cried a lot and had to hold her for a very long time after, then we discussed how her brother looked like Hamnet when he was young. More crying. Was I being emotionally manipulated, probably but I had to give him a massive hug when I got home too ( he was gaming and looked slightly non plussed!) . How did people live in a time when there precious children could be snatched away so easily

Child loss is way more common than you think. They can still be snatched away, as much as we don't like to think about it.

That's it's own pain. I'm sorry if it's your situation. I'd much rather my child were estranged though. That at least comes with the possibility of change and seeing them again.

Saw it yesterday evening, whilst it was not as exciting and interesting for me as recent Oscar winners I have seen such as The Favourite and Parasite, I am sure it was get many nominations and some awards. I agree with those who were unimpressed by Paul Mescal's performance, but thought Jessie Buckley and the child actors were very good.

Also felt the script was credible, a lot of period pieces have words or expressions that seem too modern and recent.

This did too,you must've missed it. Really irritates me.

Pemba · 16/03/2026 11:28

Yes, like I am sure the dialogue included 'OK' which wasn't even used at all until centuries later! Quite jarring.

Why doesn't anyone check this stuff?

Jessie Buckley gave a powerhouse performance as usual, so she probably deserved her Oscar, the film looked good and there were plenty of elements I liked. However when me and DD went to see it we found it dragged.

It's the sort of film that will be nominated though.

Whereas we saw 28 Years Later last year and found that really fresh and original, great cinematography but I don't think it's ever been nominated for anything? Maybe because it's classed as a horror. I know period dramas usually get taken more seriously at the Oscars, sometimes beyond what they deserve.

I absolutely loved it, cried the whole way through. Over the moon that Jessie Buckley won the Oscar, so well deserved

FrothyCothy · 16/03/2026 16:47

Not seen it but Sinners is a horror that has done very well this award season. Maybe 28 days suffered from being a sequel?

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 16/03/2026 16:53

Such a wail fest.

Glad JB won but also glad that it didn’t sweep the awards.

It was manipulative and self consciously emotional.

Hard no.
