Anyone else seen it? Great acting, even from the woman who cannot really act.

I saw it on Monday night, and as much as I love Clive, I have to agree with Strawberry. I was really looking forward to it but I just didn't enjoy it. I thought it was at least half an hour too long and by the end I just wanted to knock all their bloody heads together.

It was very obvious it had been a play, and I'm sure it was a very good play, but IMO it didn't translate onto the big screen.

Have to say though Clive was absolutely, gorgeous.

Thanks Kayleigh, think I'm looking forward to the fokkers! Was Closer written by Patrick Marber? As in Alan Partridge etc?

Kayleigh · 19/01/2005 22:14

Yes Davros, I believe it was written by the guy that did Alan Partridge. Enjoy your film

Went to see this last night. At first thought I wasn't going to like it, then it got going and started to enjoy it, last 20 mins crap, whole thing too long and laboured and at the end thought it was twaddle! DIdn't feel like we'd wasted our time or anything but wouldn't bother with it again which is one of my measures, whether a film is a "multi-watcher" or not.
I thought a lot of it was laboured with minimal dialogue, not one character you could care about but also think this was probably deliberate. Made me think that PM had decided to do an updated version of a Noel Coward play....
Best bit was the on-line "chat", Clive Owen throughout esp in his posh private practice. Have decided I'm not keen on Jude Law, can take him or leave him. How come they just had to want to sleep with each other and it would happen just like magic?

PLOT SPOILER DO NOT READ!!!!

I loved it for first half.

was sorry when they all went back to their original partners.

Thought the younger girl was appalling beyond belief and was glad when he slapped her at the end.

think it is very funny that the film world continues to peddle the (very attractive) myth that overwhelming lust is important an will conquer all.

Pure escapism but very engaging.

Davros · 26/01/2005 21:46

Almost but not quite engaging enough for my taste!

jasper · 26/01/2005 21:54

wouldn't it be great if you could have a chance encounter with a gorgeous man who subsequently declared he was in love with you and you just HAD to disrupt everyone else's lives to be together and enjoy lifelong ecstasy?

Then you could spend the rest of your life lolling around snogging in a fabulous appartment with no visible means of support.

Has thatEVERhappened???

Where do I sign?

hoxtonchick · 26/01/2005 23:10

saw this tonight & really hated it! kept muttering to my friend i wanted to leave.... seem to remember liking the play when i saw it (due to the excellent assistant director no doubt ), but thought the film was laboured & didn't translate at all well to the big screen. and jude law looked awful. i am a bit as i was really looking forward to it.

girlfromipanema · 29/01/2005 11:06

Beetroot I'm so impressed, I adored the play, loved that park they sat in, thought Neal Pearson (it was him wasn't it?) was excellent as was the whole production.
Haven't seen Closer but re: Clive Owen's teeth ! They are terrible, I wanted to wear shades when I watched him interviewed on Jonathan Ross, they are so so so perfect they totally curdle with his wonderful 'imperfectly ravaged' looks. Where did he say he hates them? Those teeth made me determined not to see King Arthur- which looked rubbish any way!

Dahlia · 31/01/2005 23:04

I thought overall it wasn't a bad screen adaptation of a truly awesome play. I just wish they hadn't made such major changes to the story! I don't want to give it away for those that haven't seen it, but why on earth do they do that? I have performed the part of Alice in Closer on stage and so I feel I know the piece quite well, and was dismayed at the changes. But having said that, I thought Clive Owen was a bit gorgeous, and the theme music was perfect. Well worth watching as its not your usual stuff.

Moomin · 06/02/2005 09:19

went to see this last night with dh and we both really liked it. i'd be interested to find out what the differences to plot and script there were with the stage version.
agree about clive owen's teeth!! slightly manky teeth suit him much better. in the strip club scenes they were flourescent - like in friends when ross had his lightened and they lit up in the dark. that's bloody hollywood for you - they won't employ anyone that doesn't have teeth like huge white melamine kitchen doors. they looked bloody awful - shame on him for agreeing to it.
dh usually hates julia roberts but he said he thought it was the best thing he's seen her do. we both agreed it was nice seeing a film that was all about the dialogue for a change.

There's a special showing of Closer at the cinema round the corner from us on the 18th, followed by a Q&A session with Clive Owen and Patrick Marber. Shall I go and ask Clive about his teeth? on behalf of all MNers of course

slobetta · 07/02/2005 19:09

yes Davros yes! I hope you say 'No Clive No! Go back to the dentist and ask for your old ones back you look like an alien with those plastic glow in the dark gnashers!'

Moomin · 07/02/2005 19:13

i was telling mil about this yesterday and she said in all seriousness, 'well perhaps he should think about having them dirtied up a bit now'. lol

altho come to think of it...
