A Real Pain

I’ve just got back and I loved it. Kieron Culkin is fantastic in it. There were some laughs but a lot of understandable angst. Poland looked magnificent. Jesse Eisenberg is just a young Woody Allen isn’t he? And he’s been in his movies so I expect he’s perfect in his films. He’s a clever guy and I think this film is very personal to him. I enjoyed it a lot.

Yes, I really enjoyed it. Poignant.

rookiemere · 11/01/2025 20:37

Just been to see this. I enjoyed it and thought it was well made, but ultimately not sure what to make of it.

EachandEveryone · 11/01/2025 22:44

It was very quiet in the cinema after it finished.

I loved it. Yes very Woody Allen.

How great was Kieran Culkin.

EachandEveryone · 12/01/2025 13:06

Omg my cousin has text me from the cinema to say she can’t watch it as she can’t stand his character. I feel bad for recommending it as I loved it.

Maybe she should give it time. I didn't like him to start with.

Don't feel bad anyway, can't predict other people's tastes (or lack of 😁).

Rainynightinsoho · 12/01/2025 14:07

Tell her to turn her phone off in the cinema!!

EachandEveryone · 12/01/2025 14:46

She would never normally have it on. This was at the beginning and she hated him from the minute he was on the screen. I wouldn’t want her to be my MH nurse if I needed one! Also she never laughed once and in our showing we certainly did but then 80 percent of the crowd where Jewish so may that was it? Is it too niche for some people?

I’m going to see it next week so glad to hear that you loved it. I’d watch KC in anything tbh, he’s magnificent. He absolutely made Succession for me.

Not Jewish and loved it. And laughed. KC was really moving.

It’s odd when you love something and others hate it isn’t it? The two extremes rather than something closer to indifference.

Guardian has a good interview with them.

Saw it today. I really liked it, which makes a nice change after being very underwhelmed by most of my recent cinema trips to see much-praised films. Certainly very Woody Allen, in a good way. Cast and script excellent, and Poland did indeed look lovely.

BrandyandGinger · 12/01/2025 19:33

I really enjoyed it. I liked JE's character a lot. I think he portrayed exactly what's it's like to be a coper in the shadow of a bigger personality. I liked the bit where his wife was calling him but he didn't have the mental energy to answer the phone.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/01/2025 14:52

Just come back from seeing it, I expected cos I hadn't seen more than their Graham Norton but a comedy road trip so actually wasn't keen. Saw it for a friend and so glad I did although we both left feeling sad. I guess it feels incomplete. He's still sad, he's still on meds, nothing really got obviously fixed but then, that's real life. People don't get Hollywood endings after a week's holiday. I thought he'd end up in bed with the older woman, another cliche but again they just kept it away from that kind of typical fare. Loved the slap

molymo · 17/01/2025 20:27

Saw this last night it's very good. I'm also not Jewish but found it very moving as well as laugh out loud funny in various places. Both actors are wonderful together as such contrasting characters. Great that it's not ridiculously long like a lot of films. Wasn't expecting a big dramatic finale, that was kinda the whole point, it was just a window on their relationship and bookended by the trip. At the start I did worry that KC was just playing a slightly different version of Roman but that passed as the only thing in common was the inappropriate outbursts.

Britpopbaby · 25/01/2025 18:42

I have just seen this today and enjoyed it. I liked how KC’s character made the most profound, sensitive p and thoughtful points where as I’d have expected it to have been JE’s character.

libertineagain · 25/01/2025 20:06

I also saw this today with my son. Really enjoyed it but was very moved too. There were some great lines. We have already been quoting: 'money is heroin for boring people'. I've loved KC since Igby Goes Down and I think this was a good choice post-Succession.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 26/01/2025 11:59

Updating to say I loved it.

DP is a big film buff and usually enjoys dissecting a film after we watch it. There wasn’t much to say about this one, it was exactly as I’d hoped and expected from trailers although I kind of wish they didn’t show so much in trailers as you feel like you’ve already seen a lot of the good stuff.

I thought it was quality stuff, brilliant acting from all, moving without being sentimental, respectful of the history without feeling worthy, and it didn’t tie up anything which felt very real. Loved KC but also warmed to JE who I don’t usually enjoy so much.

Made me want to visit Poland too - maybe their tourist board had a hand?!

Arran2024 · 01/02/2025 17:03

I absolutely loved it. Loved Kieran McCaulkey in Succession (and Father of the Bride) and loved him in this. Hope he wins the Oscar/ bafta.

Did anyone else not realise that the single American woman is Jennifer Grey, Baby from Dirty Dancing? I only found out when I checked out the cast. She had plastic surgery and it made her unrecognisable - even she says so.

No way!

Titasaducksarse · 01/02/2025 17:08

We loved it too.

NowThatYouSayIt · 01/02/2025 17:09

Oh, I’m dying to see this, it’s had such good reviews! Had forgotten Jennifer Grey was in it.

This x 100.

I thought the two leads, theur characters, the details in their personalities and mannerisms was exceptional.

But for me, weirdly the most triggering thing I've watched in a long time. Benji was so similar to my ex when he was mentally ill. The big personality who attracts all the attention. Me, David, watching in worry, partially paralysed by anxiety that another suicide attempt is looming. He taking all the oxygen with his pain and charisma. Me, struggling to keep my head above water being judged as the mentally unstable one.

ffsgloria · 09/02/2025 23:10

We loved it, great acting, very poignant, and I couldn't believe that was Jennifer Grey!

Fandango52 · 10/02/2025 17:37

I thought it was brilliant and would like to watch it again. I thought KC and JE were both excellent and was impressed that JE wrote and directed it too., and they had Emma Stone on the executive production team! And the music was beautiful. I’m really glad it got Oscar nominated and hope it wins something.

Fandango52 · 10/02/2025 17:39

The bit where KC’s character says money is ‘heroin for boring people’ cracked me up 😂 I had a cold at the time, so it was pretty embarrassing to let loose an audible wheeze right in the middle of the cinema when I laughed, but it was a great line!
