Couldn't see a thread, has anyone been to see the new Nosferatu film?!

Just saw it today, loved it, but honestly can't believe it was only a 15 - can only assume because it didn't have swearing or guns?

Loved the shadow scenes.

Awful. I have only once before left before the end of a film and Nosferatu was the second time I did it. It was dull, drab, slow- far too much time spent creating cliched scenes to 'honour' the genre, which were just pointless to the action of the plot and completely over the top. Most of the cast tried hard with a script that lacked depth and pace and at times was laughable.
As ever these days, young female actresses exploited - why does the young 'virgin' need to be taken on a horse, naked to a grave at midnight with breasts exposed? We never see what happens to her, just that the corpse in the grave is dug up and staked.
Why all the ridiculously hackneyed 'Romanian gypsies' scenes? Talk about over-the-top pointless stereotyping.
Lily Rose Depp is terrible- miserable, consumptive-faced, spends the first hour in semi-sexual paroxysms, in her sleeping and waking hours. The corset -tearing scene is ludicrous.
Biting heads off pigeons, ancient Romanian toothless superstitious crones, gypsy children surrounding and begging from the white, Western European outsider, no questioning by characters of bizarre behaviour/requests/actions of other characters.
Female characters are old, toothless crones or women there to be controlled and sexually exploited by men or obedient wives ready to be kissed at any time their sexually-driven husbands fancy kissing them.
Wasn't scary, just a few shock tactics.
Awful.

Just got back from seeing it on the super screen, definitely worth it!

covetingthepreciousthings · 13/01/2025 07:57

@LuluBlakey1 have you watched the original out of interest?

I loved it. My husband wasn’t too keen on Depp’s performance but I thought she was great.
I don’t think I’ve met a Robert Eggers film I didn’t like though!
The Witch is one of my all time favourites and Robert Pattinson’s response to Willem Dafoe’s sea curse monologue in The Lighthouse was brilliance!

Yes, not recently but yes.

I was disappointed. I loved the 1922 original! When I first saw that, I was surprised by how scary it was.
There was certainly a lot of homage to that. A lot of the shots were very similar and as others have said the cinematography was beautiful.
That said, they played the dramatics way too hard. Even the original one had the characters smiling occasionally. Depp especially was completely over the top. I was with a friend and every now and then, I could see he was trying not to laugh.

I thought it was really good. The Director had clearly researched the folklore around Nosferatu (Wikipedia is a good place to start) and people might complain about the Romanian gypsies and sacrifical young woman but they are part of the mythology. I though Nicholas Hoult did a great job especially at the castle (though I keep seeing Peter from "The Great"!)

I thought it could have been a little shorter, but visually amazing, so absolutely stunning images.

If it hadn't been a friend's birthday choice, I'd have left after 30 minutes. It was beautiful to look at but I found the script & acting laughable. I know it's meant to be melodramatic & high camp gothic but to me it was clichéd, wooden, pompous tosh.

LinesAndLinesAndLinesAndLines · 17/01/2025 07:36

I've pre-ordered the blu ray and I'm positively ecstatic at the prospect of a 3 hour extended cut 😂 the more the better for me, I don't think it was too long at all.

My friend wants to go and see it next week so I'm tagging along for yet another cinema viewing, Odeon this time. For a change 😂.

I think 18 classifications are mainly used these days for films that depict drug use, rather than sex. The sex scenes in this were mainly fully clothed anyway.

itsstillmehere · 17/01/2025 22:41

I really enjoyed it. It's a gothic horror in its true sense. And I've always loved these. Husband was less enthusiastic. Spent the whole movie trying to work out who the doc was and of course he was from The office 😂

3kidsaremorethanenough · 18/01/2025 21:19

Went to see it again last night DD hadn't seen it and she studied the 1922 one in her media studies class so I said I'd go again, I think I enjoyed it even more 2nd time seeing it. Dd loved it too. I didn't realise Eggerrs made The Lighthouse too, I enjoyed it too so I must watch the witch

Elliebelle1 · 18/01/2025 22:43

I saw this today. I really liked it I love dark gothic horrors but it would not be for everyone. The ending was good. Only think I didn’t like was Orlack, he took ages to spit the words out it was frustrating. Eggars should have had Claes Bang as the vampire who he worked with in the Northman and who played a good Dracula in the bbc series

Vivoom · 19/01/2025 14:18

My 17 year old twins came out and said that was traumatising and not in a horror way, they said the sexual content was inappropriate and that it most definitely shouldn’t be aimed at 15 olds! they said everyone was saying it should be an 18 and they wished they had never gone.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 19/01/2025 14:37

I saw it yesterday. I loved the visuals and the creeping terror, loved the sound of Nosferatu (almost purring at times). Some of the acting was overbaked and they could've trimmed a good half hour off it to make for a more satisfactory experience imo.

rookiemere · 20/01/2025 07:31

Went to see this last night.

I would give it a 6.5/10. Not a dreadful film, but awfully pleased with itself and could have been greatly improved by a bit of editing. To be fair I say this about most films. I thought the acting was reasonable but the script was dire.

Unlike some I didn't find it menacing or terrifying at all. When the Nicholas Hoult character arrived at the castle, my main thought was how long are they going to string this bit out for, and indeed they did string out the CGI visuals for a very long time. Plus it was so dark for most of the movie, I struggled to see what was going on most of the time.

I enjoyed it a bit more once the Dafoe character got involved and the plot sped up a bit, and thought the ending was quite satisfactory.

I'm actually quite amazed that I found a 2hr21 film about Dylan in whom I have no particular interest, to be about twice as gripping as this was.

Peachycat01 · 09/02/2025 10:27

I thought it was brilliant - tense, atmospheric and dark. Striking cinematography - Gothic masterpiece.

itsstillmehere · 09/02/2025 13:50

It's of its traditional genre - like the original Dracula ones I used to watch 50 years ago 😂 not scary, not intended to be. Makes you giggle at bits.
