Couldn't see a thread, has anyone been to see the new Nosferatu film?!

Just saw it today, loved it, but honestly can't believe it was only a 15 - can only assume because it didn't have swearing or guns?

Loved the shadow scenes.

I’m going to see it this evening! What made you surprised that it was only a 15? Is there a lot of blood and gore?

TheCatCameBack112 · 01/01/2025 17:44

I've just come back form seeing it. I wish I'd been to see that one where Florence Pugh has cancer instead...

Yes I was surprised how gory it was, considering a lot of reviews had said it's not a horror in that sense.

What made you not enjoy it ?

It was so dark!!! Like, 'Game of Thrones' season 8 dark where I could barely make out the scenary. And it was so slow, especially the first half.

I normally love Bill Skarsgård but there literally could have been anyone under all the prosthetics, and it seemed a waste of a great character actor. The breathing was just...distracting.

Melodyfair · 01/01/2025 17:53

I absolutely can’t wait, the reviews are excellent and I’ve been dying to see how they reimagined the count after reading about the directors vision, loved that he wanted him to be more grounded as the nobleman he once was, I may have cheated and looked up spoilers!

FleaDog · 01/01/2025 18:03

I loved it....

The scene in the forset where the carriage approaches was so gothic and sinister.

I wasn't sure about the appearance of Nosferatu at fist but by the ending i loved it... he was a monster, but gave a glimpse of his human origins, it was sad, and I wasn't sre who i felt more sympathy for, and the score in the final scene was brilliant, made me feel a bit emotional 😳

FleaDog · 01/01/2025 18:04

And after about 30.minutes I realised the employer is the bishop from Rev!

Aliceisagooddog · 01/01/2025 18:08

I was hoping to see this with my teenage kids....but is there much sex? I get uncomfortable watching graphic scenes with kids lol!!

How old are they? I don't think I'd go with them to be honest Blush

My 16 yr old went with me

There is a very brief sex scene whete they are fully clothed bt very briefly have a quick but, ahem, vigourous shag 😂 couple of allusions re female masturbation, not graphic, but might raise eyebrows...

I saw it tonight, I was looking forward to it but ended up disappointed. It was too long and slow, I felt bored really. The atmosphere and cinematography were good and I liked the beginning and the end...

I also usually like Bill Skarsgard, but he was OTT in this! Too much with the prosthetics (unrecognisable as a pp said) and that voice, he was barely understandable. The director should have told him to tone it down. I think it was misjudged because he is very evidently an inhuman monster from the moment the Nicholas Hoult character meets him (and is understandably terrified). He is supposed to seem plausible as just an eccentric nobleman who wants to do a property deal, at first, isn't he?

Also, the Count travels by sea from Transylvania to Germany, what? Wouldn't this involve circumnavigating round the whole of Europe, going round Italy and Spain and the Med, up past France etc?
Of course he has to arrive by ship as it fits the plot (the plague rats etc) and of course in the original Dracula, (which Nosferatu rips off) he arrives by sea to the coast of England (Whitby).

Another thing that I think they got wrong in tone was when the wife Ellen back home was having fits and convulsions, she was manhandled in her nightgown/corsets by her husband's male friend. A gentleman of that era just wouldn't have behaved like that with an unrelated lady, it would have been thought completely inappropriate and unseemly. If she was uncontrollable then either the wife or maids would have dealt with it, or medical people would have been brought in.

I suppose I am comparing it to the 1990s 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' with Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder etc. I still love that. It had the same brooding atmosphere, lots of creepy horror, characters you cared about more, added romance and pathos and just more sparkle. Also a great score with the beautiful 'Love Song for a Vampire' by Annie Lennox.

Going later today to a captioned version

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2025 06:34

Fight Club was recently downgraded to a 15 OP so anything goes , it seems...

Has anyone seen the original FW Murnau Nosferatu- how does it compare? I just assumed it was a direct reworking plus talking !

Also surprised by that!

Yes I have watched the original, I don't think it's an exact reworking , but I would be interested to know those who didn't enjoy the new one whether they've seen the original 1922 version?

I love both but differently, I find the 1922 version a bit more whimsical in a way, there was a lot of jaunty pan pipe music in the version I watched and Nosferatu to me was was a bit more like a mythical creature than a complete horror like in the newer version.

I loved the nods to the original like the shadows, and I think it was so dark to echo the b&w filming of the original maybe.

I loved it, it was like watching a succession of paintings, so well shot.

The story is familiar of course but Eggar managed to inject dread into almost every scene, I loved the whole journey through the forest to the castle.

When Nosferatu appeared I was a bit taken aback by the voice and appearance but came to the view that it was a completely different creature than the dapper suave Dracula in the dinner jacket and quite liked this take. The breathing took a bit of getting used to but I saw someone say it was Iike that because he wasn't human and drawing air in and out like bellows?

It wasn't perfect but as a gothic horror I thought it was amazing, I was never bored with the 'still' scenes with lingering looks etc 😄

That said, the couple beside us hated it, so it's certainly not for everyone. Regarding teenagers, it depends on their personalities, there are sex and nude scenes, along with quite a lot of blood, but you wouid expect that from a vampire film.

I give it 8.5 out of 10

PreciousMahoney · 02/01/2025 11:30

Oops too late to edit, I do of course mean Eggers not Eggar

LinesAndLinesAndLinesAndLines · 02/01/2025 16:26

I've just got back and I absolutely loved it! It was right up my dark brooding gothic horror alley and I thought Skarsgård was excellent. I have now forgiven him for being in that awful 'reimagining' of The Crow 😂.

Every shot was like a painting, it was just gorgeous to look at. I can't wait to see it again!

AuntieMarys · 02/01/2025 16:53

Just returned...loved it! Very brooding and atmospheric.

Skyscrapper · 02/01/2025 19:11

I did not like it. I'd never seen the original tbh , just chose it a the title suggested scary movie lol Rather disappointing...all I could see was bloodied make-up, a few ugly faces pulled and baaaahhhhh screaming. Might have made more sense if I'd seen the original probably and was a fan

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/01/2025 19:47

I think if you go into it just expecting a normal horror film, and don't know the original at all, it could be a disappointment.

It probably helps to like vampire lore and have some knowledge of the original.

I like the previous PPs comments about the scenes being like paintings, I think that's why I didn't mind that it was a bit slow because the shots were so beautiful to take it.

Just as an aside I've just seen in an interview that there was no digital voice alterations or enhancements to Bill Skasgårds voice as Count Orlok. Also Lily Rose Depps body movements weren't digitally enhanced it or sped up etc, it was all her own movements.

For those who enjoyed it, can I also recommend Shadow Of The Vampire, also with Willem Dafoe who plays Max Schreck.
