Films to watch over Christmas which suit 3 generations...?

Over Christmas we'll have two young adult DD's and grandparents staying. To save us from scrolling through Netflix etc... and ending up not watching anything, I want to gather together some ideas in advance. Current films or classics. I guess we're looking at PGs, 12s and old school 15s. The grandparents are mid-70s. No-one minds a bit of violence or swearing but trying to avoid cringey sex scenes. No-one wants to watch those in front of their parents.

The Family Stone, Last Christmas, Serendipity, Arthur Christmas, The Christmas Chronicles, That Christmas

bookmarket · 11/12/2024 15:58

They don't have to be Christmas films.

Isn’t there a website called Does The Dog Die or something similar, where you can see exactly what things happen eg peck on the cheek, prolonged kiss etc? Maybe just go through the TV guide and mark what’s okay?

I hate watching that sort of stuff with my kids too so I know exactly what you mean.

bookmarket · 11/12/2024 19:19

Yes. Wouldn't it be good if you could get aeroplane versions of films where they have edited out the graphic parts.

A Christmas Story.

Kamek · 11/12/2024 21:02

I watched a film the other day on film 4 called Brian and Charles which is PG and had nothing inappropriate in it. It was funny and sweet

Daysnconfuddled · 11/12/2024 21:06

All the Harry potters ?

allmybooksarefromthelibrary · 11/12/2024 21:19

Paddington 2.

HippyKayYay · 11/12/2024 21:24

What sort of genre are you looking for? Light-hearted stuff? Serious dramas? What kind of films do you all enjoy already?

The AFI has various 'top' lists, which are heavily skewed towards mainstream Hollywood films, but are a good place to start if you need some inspiration:

Mind you the original Top Gun has a very cringe kiss scene as I recall when I first watched it when I was 17.

theduchessofspork · 11/12/2024 21:32

We're in a similar situation and working our way thro 80s and 90s classics have worked really well. The YAs also like brat pack movies - breakfast club, St elmos, lost boys - but the GPs less so

Thelma and Louise
Gladiator - the first one
Alien
Fargo
Dead Poets Soc.
Pulp fiction (too much?)
Silence of the lambs
Amadeus
Before sunrise
Harry met Sally
Fight club
Rain Man
Shawshank redemption.
Ferris Beulers day off
Usual suspects
Sixth sense

All the Harry potters ?

But... they are all adults?

MMAMPWGHAP · 11/12/2024 21:42

Lost at Sea - Robert Redford will appeal to the GPs. No dialogue so can’t be ruined by people talking over it.

Megifer · 11/12/2024 21:47

Die Hard

Headingtowardsdivorce · 11/12/2024 21:49

My parents are in their 70s, they like the same films as me mainly and we're going to watch The Impossible on Christmas Day, it's on iPlayer. I can also recommend Captain Phillips which is also on iPlayer.

Decorhate · 11/12/2024 21:51

Definitely not Love Actually unless you don’t mind watching the porn movie scenes with the old folks!

Daysnconfuddled · 11/12/2024 21:51

Starter for 10 with a young James Mcavoy and Cumberbatch is very funny.

Back to the Future films
Grease
Terminator films
Matrix Trilogy (sorry, it will stay as a Trilogy in my head).

GiveMeAbitOfSugar · 11/12/2024 21:53

Theres a new movie called Bad Tidings with Chris McCausland and Lee Mack
Its on for 90 minutes and comes out the 22nd but i think its only on Sky

Agree. I just don't get what the fuss is about the film.

TheDrunkenClam · 11/12/2024 22:04

Jerry and Marge Go Large
Bank of Dave
The Angel's Share
Blinded by the Light
Wicked Little Letters
Hidden Figures

None of those are Christmas films, but I really enjoyed them!

Blimey what a list. I can't imagine many grandparents wanting to watch Pulp Fiction with their grandkids! Or the orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally.

Do you like musicals? How about the old favourites like Chitty Bang Bang, Wizard of Oz.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

or maybe a biographical film e.g. Elvis

Thanks - we have all seen most of those in recent years but those are definitely along the right lines. I'll check out the one or two I don't recognise.
