Films to watch over Christmas which suit 3 generations...?

Over Christmas we'll have two young adult DD's and grandparents staying. To save us from scrolling through Netflix etc... and ending up not watching anything, I want to gather together some ideas in advance. Current films or classics. I guess we're looking at PGs, 12s and old school 15s. The grandparents are mid-70s. No-one minds a bit of violence or swearing but trying to avoid cringey sex scenes. No-one wants to watch those in front of their parents.

My parents are in their 70s, they like the same films as me mainly and we're going to watch The Impossible on Christmas Day, it's on iPlayer. I can also recommend Captain Phillips which is also on iPlayer.

Do you mean the tsunami film? I don't think I have ever felt so traumatised watching a film, it wouldn't be my pick for Christmas Day!

There was quite a good series of Anne of Green Gables on a while back which we watched with Dc and grandparents.

Last holiday (not a Christmas movie)
Christmas with the kranks
Dead pool v wolverine
We're the millers
Just go with it

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 13/12/2024 09:10

That Christmas

what we did on our holiday

After watching Toy Story 4 at the cinema in my 20s I told my grandma about it and she went to the cinema on her own to watch it and loved it.

Historical Dramas - another mothers son, a United Kingdom, war horse, 1917, Mary queen on Scot’s, lots of others

Calliopespa · 13/12/2024 09:11

Wonka

Films my hard-to-suit in-laws seemed happy to be watching.

Swimming with Men - synchronised swimming version of the Full Monty, good ensemble cast
Click and Collect - short, sweet and silly
Banshees of Inisherin - funny, well-acted and good for the talking points, extra marks for having a very good hairy boy and a tiny pony in it
The Lost King - digging up car parks and submitting forms. I don’t know why really but everyone in our house between 12 and 75 was gripped
Living - Bill Nighy learns to live. It could have been made at any point in the last seventy years. Also very moving. Best avoided maybe if anyone has cancer.
Small Time Crooks - even people who don’t like Woody Allen tend to laugh. Tracy Ullman is phenomenal
Chef - chilled, low-conflict, heart-warming with mega-stars in cameo roles. But it’ll make you hungry, get cheese in.

Wildcard-

Two Weeks Notice. 00s Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock ‘opposites attract’ romcom. My oft-disgruntled FIL pissed himself laughing. Bizarre but good to see 😂

Oh yes Glass Onion was good all round viewing.
Didn't like the sequel so much.

Stardust is an exceptionally lovely film (with a very entertaining cameo from Robert de Niro). I was very unwell last Christmas and a friend suggested this film to me to cheer me up - it was a huge hit with the whole family.

I have to admit Star dust is one of my favourites films.

I like Gattaca as well - though can't remember if there are sex scenes in it.

I also like many of the classics - North by North west - Bringing up baby and one version of 39 steps - think one with Kenneth More.

Lords of the Rings films and Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot remakes though the dancing in first scene on death on the Nile is a bit much and can see why many fans don't but I think they have something to them.

@desperatedaysareover The Lost King - digging up car parks and submitting forms. I don’t know why really but everyone in our house between 12 and 75 was gripped.

This reminded me of when my Y8 son went to the cinema at Westfield with his a bunch of 13yo mates, all dressed up in their Nike tracksuits and trainers - and thought this was some medieval action movie. He said it was the most boring film he'd ever been to - and was annoyed he'd spent £9 of his limited allowance on a ticket! "And some old granny kept telling us to turn our phones off..." Blush 🙄😬. I had to laugh, though, at the idea of this bunch of super cool, History-hating boys all sitting through that film.

I sus the younguns will come and go. The parents will be flitting tidying up making tea.

Die hard
Lethal weapon.

Decorhate · 13/12/2024 19:50

@Calliopespa Sorry not an actual porn movie but the storyline where Martin Freeman and another woman are the stand ins for the sex scenes in a movie that is being made. I’d forgotten all about it when I watched with my young Dd 😲

Lol at the mental image of a row of thirteen y.os sitting waiting for the slaughter to begin watching Sally Hawkins down the county buildings in a little beige mac. I wasn’t fascinated by the premise myself and watched it thinking ‘good luck dramatising this’ but I was drawn in by the ghost and I found the resolution surprisingly moving. Did a good job of making the audience feel the magic of the discovery.

Calliopespa · 13/12/2024 20:09

‘That Christmas’ is entertaining enough. More geared at the younger audience but watchable for adults.

Just to second this - I haven't been able to finish watching The Impossible because of the visceral trauma that it shows. Seemed like a really good film, but intense!

MadameBethune · 17/12/2024 08:08

Looking for Eric is a great film, ideal for multi generation watching, but I don’t know if it’s available anywhere. Eric Cantona features as a spirit guide to a postman struggling with his errant teenage sons, it’s a great film about male friendships.

American Fiction is now on Amazon Prime, that’s also really good, it’s about a serious black author who writes a send up of ‘black’ novels (ie what white publishers expect) which becomes an instant hit.
