What’s a good horror movie for a 9yo girl?

My 9yo girl keeps asking to watch a horror movie.
looking for suggestions since I don’t know any “gentle” horror movies.

She wants to watch ‘Annabelle’ after she’s picked it up off YouTube, but it looks a bit heavy duty.

I was thinking ‘mars attacks’ but even that might be too much for a 9yo…

has she watched Coraline?

SalmonWellington · 30/11/2024 00:13

Hocus Pocus?

Frozensnow · 30/11/2024 00:13

Mine loves coraline and beetlejuice

RadioNightmare · 30/11/2024 00:17

Yes that’s a good idea. Thanks

Not a film but CBBC did a series called Creeped out a while ago...my dc loved it at that age.

Although a quick google of it has made me remember some episodes were actually quite scary so you might have to check they're ok first!

Frozensnow · 30/11/2024 00:20

Goosebumps might be good- I haven’t seen it though.

Lurleene · 30/11/2024 00:21

Frankenweenie or Monster House are good at that age

Bittercup · 30/11/2024 00:25

Poltergeist or Jaws are quite a good introduction to the horror genre maybe?

BobTheBobcatsBob · 30/11/2024 00:26

Agree with others suggesting Coraline and Monster House.

fortifiedwithtea · 30/11/2024 00:37

The Witches, Roald Dahl

LilyBartsHatShop · 30/11/2024 00:37

Nightmare Before Christmas is similar to Coraline, though more gory-funny than creepy. I think I'll watch it again this year now this thread has reminded me of it.

Spirited Away (Studio Ghibli)

Yeah she loves spirited away. And howls moving castle and princess mononoke too.

Really good suggestion though. love those films

Into the Woods

leia24 · 30/11/2024 03:24

'The house with a clock in its walls' might be a good fit

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 30/11/2024 03:25

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children? Pan's Labyrinth? The Dark Crystal?

My first thoughts were Cloverfield and Carrie 🤔😂

Grimgrump · 30/11/2024 03:26

Five Nights At Freddie’s. There is one actually scary moment, though, but over quite quickly.

Pans labyrinth is definitely not one for a nine year old

Poltergeist is gruesome so is Jaws. Not until 12 at least.

lonelywater · 30/11/2024 04:17

Mr's Browns Boys. (gets coat)

wandawaves · 30/11/2024 04:21

Definitely Coraline and Frankenweenie! I love those movies, especially Frankenweenie 😭

Snorlaxo · 30/11/2024 04:21

Dr Who is written with an over 8 audience in mind (although I’d say that some are scarier )

Slydiad · 30/11/2024 04:35

I started liking some of the old black & white classic horror movies around nine - Karloff in Frankenstein, Lugosi in Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc.

Jaws is gory and occasionally quite scary - would not suggest if you swim in the sea very often!
Poltergeist is quite disturbing- wouldn't suggest it even to my 12 year old who loves dark stuff (eg. Wednesday).
The fact they're "old" movies will add to the creepiness!
Neither of these are suitable for a 9 yo imo.

Bittercup · 30/11/2024 09:24

Fair enough. A bit soon then.
