Speak no Evil

Has anyone watched it in the cinema. I thought it was really good!

Scary movies don't usually scare me, or they are too full on so I have to hide behind my hands.

In speak no evil, the constant build up of tension was so good.

James McAvoys acting was amazing.

Intelligent plot.

Scariest film that I've seen in a while!

I’ve seen the original and the trailer of the remake and thought was pointless watching as it looked identical but if they’ve changed the ending (utterly bleak) then will give it a go!

Yeah there's alot a very different vibe in the second one, as it's set in England

I'm still recovering from seeing Smile 2 today.

That is even more gory than speak no evil

Smile 1 did nothing for me so I skipped Smile 2 and saw Terrifier 3 at the weekend. I mostly find gore boring but I adore Art and there were some brilliant scenes.

Really itching to see The Substance but a friend wants to see it so I'm waiting for her to confirm a date.

Also looking forward to Never Let Go.

We watched The Mist after seeing it on this thread - that was bleak! My DH was a fan of the walking dead and said lots of the actors are in both.

I'd actually recommend Smile 2. It's really well made.

I've heard from multiple people that it's very similar to the first one, so I doubt I'd feel much different towards the sequel. But I'll probably give it a go when it pops up on Netflix/Shudder.

Fair enough.

I saw it today. And I was pleasantly surprised. I usually don't like mindless gore films, but I thought smile 2 had a really good story.

It centres on a female popstar.

I hadn't seen smile 1 actually. I must try and find that online

We thought Smile was good but I seem to remember we thought there was a fairly significant plot hole that I can’t recall now.

Can’t stand any of the Terrifier movies. DH and I are pretty hardened horror fans and I just find the shock body gore utterly disgusting. My 16yr old son and his mates love them and I think that says a lot!

The film also reminds us not to trust people and to believe what they say.

Paddy says he is a doctor in this film when he's actually unemployed.

When I was travelling, i met so many men who said that they were doctors or pilots

I tried online dating a while back, and a lot of men seemed to suggest that they were involved in some kind of operational underground work for the government. I always thought that was a red flag - for a start if you were doing that kind of work surely you wouldn't even mention it.

I see that Paddy's wife in the film is played by an Irish actress. She did a good English accent!

She's a brilliant actress. She played a great part in The Fall with Jamie Dornan (BBC serial killer drama set in Belfast that also starred Gillian Anderson - highly recommend!)

@MrsPeterHarris
Yes, I also remember her in The Fall (amazing series). I think she played a Scottish girl so her accents are fantastic.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 28/10/2024 16:15

Aisling Franciosi. She was also in a really great Australian film called The Nightingale which used to be/probably still is, on Netflix. I can highly recommend it.

I did really enjoy this and was dying to watch it with James McAvoy because I’d already seen the original. This isn’t bad for a remake and everyone was brilliant in it - plus how fit is James Mcavoy these days?! But I think I prefer the bleakness of the Danish one. Also you kind of get why the first couple is more passive, I think.

icelolly12 · 17/10/2024 19:40

I think they were talking about the contents of the home - the fact everything was ancient and a bit grubby, not realising that's typical old money in Britian. Maybe to showcase the difference in UK/USA culture.

Not just grubby - there were actual stains on the bedsheets and the awful bedroom of the boy with the makeshift bed for Agnes on the floor. You’d think those were both red flags. Plus the poor kid didn’t change his clothes for the entire film. Heartbreaking and definite signs of neglect.

SavingNotSpending · 28/10/2024 19:35

I watched the original the other day and bleak is definitely the right word. The American remake definitely has more of a build up but the last 15 mins or so of the original is so grim. The car scene with the daughter really played on my mind after.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 28/10/2024 19:43

Me too, @SavingNotSpending I’m pretty hardcore with gore and horror and blah, but the original was incredibly unnerving. I had to rewatch it the other week, after seeing this one.

This is always our approach but at least we have an excuse now, people who make friends on holiday are weirdos 🤪
